Kansas State Interviews

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So I emailed KSU and according to Marcina Ritter,

"We are working on scheduling interviews now and should have all notifications sent during the first week of December if not before. Interviews are scheduled for three weekends in January."

So far we have only heard of 1 weekend 🙂

Thank you thank you thank you. I can hardly the explain the morale boost you just provided. 😀

When I came for my interview here I flew into Wichita because I had some family friends there. Then the next day we drove up to Manhattan, did my interview, toured the school, went to the pizza party, and drove back. The drive was around 2 hours and not bad at all. I don't know what the prices are compared to KC or MHK.

The interview is short and easy. Like another student said, 2 vets and 1 local vet. I remember that they asked me questions based off my VMCAS, etc. One question I got asked was about how I felt with some of the animal rights Prop's from CA (since im from CA). Other question they always ask is: why kansas?

I think other questions I was asked where ethical questions about euthanasia, etc. It was really easy and fast. The time flies by. I would offer tours around here to anyone who has an interview but I will be on winter break and back in CA. I arrive back here on 1/10.

I recommend going to the pizza party because it answers a LOT of questions. This info is about student life, study habits, local things to do, etc. Its an open forum to current students about anything and everything.

When I came to my interview it was about 8 degrees and had a wind chill factor that made it lower. Right now its cold, but manageable. I don't know what January is going to be like but a lot of people around here say they expect a cold and wet winter.

They scatter interviews over 3 weekends and I remember the interview notifications where scattered. We also took a lot of students from waitlist so dont worry! Also 2 of our students dropped out shortly before orientation so there is always hope.

Good luck all! And PM me if you have any other questions, I can try and help.

Does anybody have any idea how many people they usually put on the waitlist and how many get offered spots? It looks like a pretty good percentage of OOS applicants interviewed get offered spots so I didn't know if most people interviewed are at least waitlisted or if only a few are.

Three weekends for OOS residents, or everyone? Haha.. I'm so negative.

Is anyone else bringing someone with them to the interview (not in obviously, but coming to tour with you, sit with you while you wait etc...), or is that frowned upon? My mom wants to come with me and see the campus, and I want her too, but not if no one else is... obviously I gotta be the cool kid 😀

Well this is my first year at this, so I can't say first hand, but I know plenty of people that have had interviews that definitely take their mom, dad, or both parents with them 😉 Nothing wrong with that! It would be nice to have support before/after the interview as well. I'm pretty sure I'll have a parent with me.

I have to take someone since I can't rent a car and flights into Manhattan are few and far between, and it will most likely be a parent. Huzzah for being under 21!

Plus I remember hearing that KSU actually encourages you to bring friends and family for the tours and pizza party, but I could be crazy.

Usually they give tours to anyone, family is always invited. The pizza party is open to family and friends as long as you let them know a rough idea of how many people you are with. I had my mom and a family friend with me and I just left them and did my interview while they went and shopped.

I just saw an email in my box from KSU and thought I was going to faint!! I quickly came on SDN to see if those emailed on 11/20 were receiving good news or bad news! I opened it, and it said my application is now complete now that they've received my VMCA's application 😱 I wonder why they've just received it? Or perhaps it just took along time to sort through all the mail? Scared me

wow, that took a while! I got that email back in the beginning of October!

Here's to hoping we hear something next week!!

Well now you know you weren't outright rejected for an interview, they just found your application between the car seats or something and went 'Oh snap!''

Has anyone received a confirmation for their interview? I emailed my reply that I would be there, I was just wondering if anyone has done the same and gotten a response confirmation.

I didn't get a confirmation email, and I'm impatient, so I just called to make sure they got me confirmed as a 'yes'. ^^' It was quick and easy.

Same - I called them and it took less than 30 seconds...more for peace of mind 🙂

Thanks I think I'll call them on Monday just to confirm they received my email.

I took a look at last years interview notification dates and it looks like a majority of the people who received interviews received them on the same day (11/20). There were very few people who were invited after the 1st wave of invites. It was a fun attempt
Congrats to all who were invited!

I have to disagree with you on that...A LOT of people received interviews on 12/9...did you look at the very last update? Don't lose hope.

I just booked my flight and rental car for KS in January. Pricey-pricey! They haven't even charged the extra $20/day for being an under-25 driver yet! I haven't even looked at hotels!

Anyhow, if any other out of staters have a Jan 9 interview and want to maybe discuss sharing lodging and/or rental car, shoot me a message. Seems so shady to do over the internet with people you don't know, but I'm having serious considerations about it to cut costs!

Speaking of rental cars, does anyone know if any companies out there rent to under-21s? The places I know of do not, but I'm hoping it's not a standard rule throughout the business.

I dunno. Most of the ones I looked at had terms for ages 21-24, I didn't specifically look for under-21.

I remember reading somewhere that KS did shuttles to the KC airport, but I don't know when/how often/etc. Thus I am renting a car.

I don't know about a shuttle through Kansas state, but there is a shuttle from MCI to Manhattan that is about $100 round trip. And I think it is a pretty general policy to not rent to under 21's unless there is a giant premium involved.

shuttle service

I was so hopeful that they would notify the next round of interviewees today, but it looks like that was not the case. And no chance of that tomorrow.

Kansas, why must you torture us so?!

So...

In preparation for the interviews, I was wondering about something things. For those of you that are already going to Kansas, what makes KState unique? What do they specialize in? I've heard it's Large Animal (yay!).

Just looking for some more information about the particulars of the program! I have checked their website, it's just not got the in depth information I am looking for.

One of the big sellers for me is the upcoming Bio Safety Level 4 facility that will be added in the next 5 years (They are taking over the Plum Island facility). It will specialize in foreign animal diseases. They currently have a level three facility that specializes in rabies. (They get many of the rabies titers and tests from around the country).

They also have an excellent exotics program and have recently took over the veterinary care for the Topeka zoo.

More generally, its a very friendly school and town. Everyone is very accomodating and since we have 50% out of state students in our class there is alot of variety. If you like football, well so does everyone here so thats a plus. Good luck to you!

what hotels did any of you guys book/stay at/recommend?

what hotels did any of you guys book/stay at/recommend?

Avoid Motel 6, beds are hard as rocks. Super 8 is okay if you're looking for something cheap, they have a good breakfast.

They should have all interviews notifications done by this week ....man, this week is going to go by s l o w...

I just got nauseous when I read that... this week is going to be agonizing! Just wondering... how do you know that? 😱

I sent an email to KSU asking about the interviews and Marcina Ritter said they should have all interview notifications out by the first week of December, if not before. Check earlier in this thread, I copied and pasted her response.

Everytime I see a new email in my inbox my heart drops. My phone NEVER leaves my side, lol

12/1 has come and gone..... 2 days left in the week, anyone think threes any chance they even send another wave out?
Also what could be the holdup? They seemed to send out alot of invites on 11/18 I wonder if they are flipping coins on equally qualified applicants or just simply placing all leftover applications on the roof and the ones that don't get blown off get interviews.

I e-mailed Marcina and she told me that they are still scheduling interviews and that they should be through december and january (yay more waiting!). I was told if I don't hear anything by the end of Jan to e-mail them. I'm hoping I get into Cornell before then. The waiting is never going to end!😡

Haha! If it's the flipping coins thing I'm pretty sure my rejection letter is in the mail cuz there are plenty more qualified applicants than me. I would have a better chance with hoping that my letter sticks to the roof. Anyway, here's hoping to a happy e-mail tomorrow or friday!

ugh... I was convinced that today would be the day they sent out the next wave... *sigh*... I'm still glued to my inbox

I'm looking for someone to share a hotel room and rental car with for Jan. 9-10. My interview is on Jan. 10. I'm flying into MHK at 3:15pm on Jan. 9, and leaving on Jan. 10 at 3:45. Any takers?

Wait....they are "scheduling" interviews? Does that mean they already sent out the invitations and are waiting to hear back from those that were extended invitations? Sorry I got kind of confused

I'm confused too...she told me that they should be done with notifications by the first week of December and now she is saying they will still be sending out interview notifications throughout December and January?

Well in last year's thread, someone got called for an interview in June. So basically, those of us that weren't first picks could be in for a very, very, long wait. 🙁

Here's exactly what she said to me today:

"We are still scheduling interviews and will probably be doing so throughout the months of December and January. If you haven't heard from us by the end of January, please feel free to contact us for an update on your application."

So wait, wait, wait we shall.

Yeah, that would be me, and several other people in my class. They will continue to fill seats as long as they have open ones, which means that you can technically get an invite at anytime. One student in my class was asked 3 days prior to our orientation. It can be frustrating, but don't get disheartened.

At least we're not in this alone; I would be even more impatient if I had no idea what was going on with any other applicants. Thank you to everyone -current students, applicants with invites, and those still waiting- who have shared supportive words, news from the adcom contacts, and hope. You make this easier.

Definitely! I went through my first application cycle 'alone' since I was applying in my Junior year and none of my other pre-vetter friends were applying that early. It was terrible not knowing anything! Finally found SDN on a random Google search.

I remember finding it and it was like an oasis in the desert. Read tons of topics reflecting the same stuff I was going through and thinking "Hey! I am normal after all!" Though I don't think you can call too many of us 'normal'. :meanie:

Interview January 23!!!!!!!!

*bouncebouncebounce*

Whheeeeeee!!! Check your emails, everyone!

Congrats Willowhand! Still nothing for me. The days when no one gets anything are pretty easy to get through, it's days when I know other people are receiving invites that I have trouble concentrating on anything but whether I just felt my Blackberry vibrate.

I got my email yesterday!!! January 23 at 8 am!!!!

Not liking the 8 am part especially since I'm in CA, too early. But still extremely excited!!!!!!😀

Fantastic!! Jan 23...

I have a 9 hour class that day... AND on the next day... AND THEN A FINAL ON THE FOLLOWING TUESDAY!!!!

😱😱😱😱
