Kansas State Interviews

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thanks for the update about still being a "viable candidate" that's promising lol. I hope Finals are going well for everyone!😀

So... What are advantages that K-State has?

Things I can think of...
1) Emphasis on Technology
2) University support... the college is growing with a new building in 2011!!
3) ~ 50% out of state students means they value diversity (in all ways)

What else would you add?😎

They're known for having quite a good diagnostics lab

Just got an email from KSU. It reads as follows.

Dear Applicant:

Thank you for your interest in the DVM degree program at Kansas State University. From approximately 1000 nonresident applicants we have invited about 360 to interview during January, 2010. Applicants were selected for interviews based on their composite GRE scores, science GPA's, and the ability to complete our prerequisites satisfactorily by the end of the 2010 spring semester.

Since the application process is on-going, we might interview additional applicants after this first round. This means that you might be invited to interview later during the spring of 2010. You are still on our list as a viable applicant. If you have not heard from us by April 15, 2010, please feel free to contact us to check on the status of your application.

If you are not offered a position in a veterinary college anywhere during this application cycle, please feel free to contact Dr. Elmore at [email protected] after April 15, 2010, to ask how you can become more competitive while reapplying at Kansas State University.

We wish you the very best as you pursue your goal of becoming a veterinarian.

Sincerely,
Marci Ritter
Administrative Assistant

Very nice letter. It's like a sort-of rejection. haha

Got the same e-mail. Hey, it's better than a rejection, which they're sending out now as well. I'll take it! lol

I agree, still a little disappointing though. I didn't have high hopes for this application cycle anyway. This is my practice round. It would be nice to have an interview to practice as well though.

i got the same email. i thought it was going to be the rejection email. so i'm stoked! i'll take it!!!

Wow, went to inbox expecting to see the same e-mail or worse, a rejection, and there's an interview invite instead? Wtf? Well I'll take it all the same...

It's dated today as well, so I guess it's their last round of interview until laterish?

Congrats HopefulAg, I must admit I'm a wee bit jealous of you right now

HopefulAg, that's awesome! Sounds like one of those things where your reaction is along the lines of "wait... what? WHOA!!!!"

To everyone still in the running for interviews, I hope you get the same pleasant surprise. Good luck!

Congrats hopefulag!!!

I do need to vent for a second though...I got the "still a viable applicant" e-mail today and I don't understand it!! I have 2 classmates that are 1st time applicants this year with lower GPAs and lower GRE scores than me and are still completeing pre-requisite courses (i've graduated). They both got interviews already and I got the "viable" applicant e-mail. If K-state chooses applicants based on GPA, GREs and completion of pre-reqs, why didn't I get one and they did? It just seems strainge to me.

I do not want this e-mail to take anything away from those who got interview invites. It's very exciting!!!!

Besides I have an interview at OSU on thursday and I much rather go there lol

Best of luck to all of you in january

Contrary to popular belief, acceptance to vet school doesn't rely solely on a good GPA, a high GRE score and completion of pre-reqs. Good luck at your interview at OSU! 😉

Well the email that was sent out said that they reviewed the applicants and chose those to interview based on GRE score, science GPA, and ability to complete the prereqs

😱 Sorry, foot in mouth on that one! But I can't 100% believe that statement. I have a really crappy GRE score (on the math portion), and still managed to receive an interview invite. It's on the last weekend though..haha, so I definitely wasn't first picks.

Yah I have a 3.4 GPA and 1200 GRE. Granted I was chosen late in the game but no way that my stats alone got me the interview. I'm sure there were tons more people way more qualified stats wise lol.

They definitely had to send out these first waves on interviews based on the factors they listed in the e-mail, which btw included science GPA, not cum GPA. Those are the weakest parts of my app and I got the "viable app" email. I'm a pretty strong applicant otherwise so they definitely looked at those things first and above all.

I have 3.58 GPA and a 1200 GRE...just doesn't make sense if that's how they pick applicants...oh well, no big deal

got invited to fill out the supplemental at michigan today too 😀 so I guess I don't need to complain. OSU and MSU are interested😀

Good luck to all who got interviews!!!

"From approximately 1000 nonresident applicants we have invited about 360 to interview during January, 2010"

I'm sure more than a third of the applicants had at least decent stats to qualify for an interview. They do look mainly at the numbers for interview selection but trust me they do glance over your experience, essays, recs, etc. Not saying you didn't get invited due to lack of experience, but it may have been a deciding factor one way or the other if your stats were on the line. Good luck to everyone!!!!!!

Were your GPA and GRE score last year the same when you applied? Did you improve your application in that area, or just experience or what?

I have a 3.55 GPA and 1200 GRE, but i'm sure my science GPA is super low. I got the viable applicant email today too

I have a strong GPA, but scored less than a 1200 on the GRE exam. They must have taken into account my clinical/research experience because I don't see how I could have been invited otherwise. We'll never know for sure, but this application process has been a real eye opener. All I've heard for four entire years is how we need to have a strong GPA and GRE score, but that just doesn't seem to always be the case.

Last year my Science GPA was 3.35, Overall was 3.4, and Last 45 was 3.4; GRE was 1200.

This year my Science GPA is 3.4, Overall is 3.45, and Last 45 is 3.58; GRE is 1200 again, even though I retook it (and got a 1190...). So either they've lowered their standards or the Last 45 helped out a bunch.

They must have taken pity on me...I've got a 1220/5.5 onthe gre but cum gpa is only a 3.2 and science is around a 3.35. I was in the big wave of invites and have a lot of experience

Just to give you guys some perspective this is the letter that myself and my study partner got last December:

"At this time we have selected and scheduled applicants for interviews for the Class of 2013. Please be aware that although you were not selected for an interview at this time, the application cycle is not complete until we have filled our class. Therefore, we will keep your file active should our admissions committee wish to interview more applicants at a later time.

You will receive a final email from us regarding your application status during late spring."

We both took this as a nice way to say "Don't call us, we'll call you" and gave up on going to K State. Yet here we are studying hard for our Micro final, two tests away from completing our 1st semester of vet school. Don't give up hope!

When did you hear back from them after you received that e-mail? Did they invite you to an interview later in the spring?

My interview ended up being on June 13th, I think I was contacted a week before that. I was accepted by the time I got back to the KC airport that afternoon.

so kansas is interviewing ~100 more ppl this year than the last few years???

i mean ~100 more oos??

It wouldn't surprise me. There was quite a scramble to do interviews in June last year.

Just got back from Kansas - WOW what an amazing place! It's like I figured --- this weekend they interviewed people pretty much only from my state (not sure why - we don't have a contract with them or anything). They conducted interviews on four floors - 2 (I think) interview teams per floor. My interviewers were incredibly nice --- and I would post in the interview feed but they didn't ask me any questions that aren't already posted. Everyone that I talked to had a great experience with their interviewers.

One of the vet students there said they were interviewing around 350 OOS, and accept around 50...yikes. Anyway, that's about all I can say! Quick and painless.

Also - they said that they will be notifying people of reject/waitlist/in around the beginning of February.

I have an interview w/K-State Jan 23rd - as someone who has just returned, do you have any travel advice? I am hoping to spend as little as is humanly possible!

Specifically, does anyone have any advice for cheap/free public transit around Manhattan (i.e. from hotel to school, airport to hotel, etc).

Thanks!

I'm not the only far northerner! yay!

I'll be there on the 23rd as well. I booked my flight out of Manchester, NH. It was slightly cheaper than the flights out of Boston/Logan. I think it still came to about ~250 for the round trip though. I'm landing around 3:30 on Friday afternoon.

I think I might be renting a car to get from the airport (MCI) to the campus. Not entirely sure on that yet--it is pretty pricey since I'm under 25.
I was told that there is a greyhound bus that runs from the airport to the campus, so that could be something to look into. A taxi could work around the campus, but it's about 2 hours from the airport, so that's a long/expensive taxi ride.

I'm not sure how they organize interview dates...I just know that it was primarily --- or all? --- Nebraska this weekend.

I don't have much advice for travel because I drove...

I love my Mac and the fact that it dings as soon as I have an email. Best ding ever and so random. I just got an interview invite at 6:15pm?!?! I was one of the people that received the "viable applicant" email. So for all of you that received the same email... DON'T GIVE UP HOPE! 😀

for people at kansas: how easy is it to find living with a small (less than 15 lbs) dog? is it irritating or super easy or what shade in between?

I withdrew my application from KSU yesterday, hopefully someone from SDN will get my interview spot (Jan 9-10 dates) Good luck everyone!!! 🙂

Thank you!! I sincerely hope it was for reasons you are comfortable with and not due to some misfortune. I would assume it has to do with your OSU acceptance? Congrats!

Coming from someone still stalking the email for an interview- THANKS!

I just sent an email withdrawing my application as well. Do I need to do anything more than that? Good luck everyone still waiting for an interview. I hope someone gets my spot on Jan. 10!

I sent an email to Ms. Ritter but got an automated response saying she was out of the office until January. There was a phone number in that email that I called and they said they would take care of everything 🙂

I withdrew my app too in light of my acceptance to Edinburgh and my interview in January with RVC. So, there is another interview slot open. Good luck to you all.

I will withdraw my application on Monday. I'm still waiting on OSU but I got the Tufts letter today! I hope one of you gets my interview!!!

Hi all! Just found SDN and am so excited to read about everyone's experiences and to know that we are not alone in this process! 🙂

I was wondering if anyone having an interview at Kansas is flying into the Manhattan airport and if so, have you been able to figure out transportation to and from the airport? The car rental places are closed extremely early in the afternoon (before my flight arrives on Saturday) and I'm currently just hoping for a taxi....? Would love recommendations of what people have found for transport to the school and around town (interview is Jan 10th).

Best wishes to everyone who has applied this year and happy holidays! My fingers are crossed for all of us! 🙂

I'm flying into Manhattan and was going to take a cab. I read that it was only a 5 mile drive ($15) to KSU. I think I just assumed that there would be taxis lined up at the airport, but I should double-check. Bell Taxi seems to be the only other option. Their number is: (785) 537-2080. Good luck with your interview!

Yeah there probably won't be taxis lined up at the airport, so be prepared to call for one and then wait a little bit.
Also, I'm not sure on the fee but it will take a little more than 5 minutes if you're going straight to Kstate...the airport is about 5 miles out of the southwest corner of town, and the vet school is toward the northeast end of town...I'd say its a 15-20 minute drive
