Hey guys for those who have taken the DAT and kaplan midterm(from the course) how do they compare? I thought the midterm was pretty straightforward and kinda easy except for the QR which I ran out of time. Many people have said kaplan is easy so I just wanted to know if my scores were inflated or not. What about the final exam? thanks in advance.

The thing to remember about Kaplan is that it is good for basic concept review. I took the class last year and found myself unprepared when I took the DAT even though I was scoring 18-20 on most of the subject tests. Needless to say I am retaking and am studying way more for this one than I did for the first one.

Kaplan gives you a false sense of security and I would hate to see anyone in the same predicament that some of us are in by being sucked in by the Kaplan hype and now we are retaking.

If you are not supplementing Kaplan with anything else you may want to step up your game a notch or two.

Best of luck to ya.

hey thanks for the reply.
I'm actually not in the class but was able to get my hands on the midterm and final exam along with subject tests. Ive been studying mainly with ap cliffs, princeton review mcat biology and chemistry, cdp, destroyer. So I've been supplementing but I just started taking practice exams but didnt know where these kaplan exams ranked next to topscore and achiever. good luck studying!

the kaplan midterm and final do give a false sense of security....Notice that your marks in the science workshops and subject tests are way more specific and harder.

I also have topscore....but it's way too specific and not representitive of the DAT I wrote. I found that it was good practice for the RC though, I got 21.

how is destroyer working out for you?

also what is "ap cliffs"?

Glad you have supplemental materials.

Kaplan is good for the basics like I said. Just keep plugging away at the Destroyer and teh other material the you have.

TS is pretty representative of the DAT. Achiever is harder so don't get discouraged by the scores you might receive.

No matter what tools you use learn from them. Figure out why you got certain questions right and why you got others wrong.

AP Cliffs Biology. It is a condensed simplified paperback book that breaks biology material down into easy to understand information.

hey thanks for the advice rdhdss1!

quartel,
destroyer is working out well for me, i found the kaplan genchem/orgo to be really easy after going through destroyer 2x. As for biology the questions are good and the solutions are helpful. we'll see if its really worth the $150 pricetag after i take my exam but so far so good. gl studying

believe it or not I just recently won the destroyer by raffle and I'm eagerly waiting to go through it. I wanted to get it but my family is really ghetto so I couldnt ask them for money. 🙁

Kaplan did give me a false sense of security. After doing the real DAT and getting 17AA I knew I had to try something better. Kaplan blue and online materials are 'basic' and while it does give you a 'pass' it's not good enough in my opinion to get you a competitive score on the DAT. I look forward to getting revenge next time.

Also side question.....I'm going to graduate school soon. It's a 2 yr program. I was wondering if getting 3.7~4.0GPA in grad school would basically wash away by poor gpa in undergrad. The way I see it I cant improve my GPA unless I start fresh in grad school. Is the grad school marks all the dental schools look at? I'm sure they dont combine undergrade and graduate marks together.

congrats for winning destroyer! i think it will definitly help you out since it another resource to use but make sure you make use of the explanations i find them really helpful. Thanks for the insight on Kaplan, ill be sure when I take my Kaplan exams to view those scores as little inflated.

As for grad school, a 3.7-4.0 will look really good. What are you getting your masters in? About washing it away, school will still see your undergrad gpa but then they will see your great masters gpa also and will see your dedication and improvement which is definitely a plus. A good masters with strong DAT can help you out a lot. I wish you the best of luck!

Whatup albuterol,

The kaplan practice midterm and final are a bit easier then there 3 practice exams see if you can get one of those and any subject tests they have are GREAT, they cover more detailed areas then the practice exams.

Step up your game in development + cellbio + biochem. I feel like the DAT derives alot of there more complex questions from those three areas.

I expect a high DAT score from you!!!

my mannn achilles.
i definitely stepped up my game in cellbio/development since you told me to. Been wikiing/reading your notes on those topics. I'll try to get my hands on the 3 practice exams i only have the midterm and final. The subject tests were definitely good practice learned a bit from them. Taking the exam on sept 10th so until then I can just study smart, but doing problems, exams, and reviewing the material to keep it fresh...ill keep u posted haha
