Do you recommend taking the private tutoring for Kaplan? See, I've had a bad past and NEED to get a very high score. Will it make a big difference? I tend to do better studying with someone and asking questions and "having" to be studying for it. What do you guys think? I've never seen a Kaplan center and don't know much about it. Please let me know. It's about $3,500 but that's not a big deal. What would you advise? Please no remarks about use the money to travel to Europe 🙂 I have extra money to do that if I get 20's on the DAT. 😉

I personally have never met anyone that had done private tutoring, but I can tell that most of my friends that have taken kaplan have scored 20+ on the DAT. Personally, I think it's ludicrous to pay $3,500 bucks for 1 test but I guess its your money. I think you can make a 20+. I think if you take the $1000 course and study hard u can make 20+.

Having a private tutor makes a significant difference, it gives you more confidence, plus having a teacher to check if you know everything must be a 1st class ticket to 20+ score. But it all depends on you, If you are the kind of person who can handle that go for it, If you are not sure, then don't spend the money and instead do the other option croco mentioned. There is a lot of fun studying by yourself, some people simply can't do that.

The choice is yours.

In my opinion,

If you feel the tutoring will help improve your score, then go for it. Personally, I do not think it will guarantee a 20+. The only way to guarantee a 20+ is to spend a lot of time consistenly learning and mastering the material.

If money is no issue, I would rather buy up all sources of practice questions possible. Read them, understand them, master them, gain confidence, then go kick ass!!

Don't waste your money. I know a number of ppl who mistakenly think by getting a private tutor they are going to score higher on the DAT. It is true that a private tutor will be helful in clarifying certain topics for you. But that doesn't mean they'll help you to master those topics. The only way you master something is this: (1) memorize the rules. (2) Apply the rules by doing some problems. And if you find some topics to be confusing , go to your old text books and use them. If you don't have your old text books, go to amazon.com or ebay, and buy an older edition of the text book for $10 or less .

I understand money might not be the issue for you. Don't squander your money. Instead help the less fortune.

Something to think about:
If you think there's a lot to be learned for the DAT or the materials are difficult to learn, than how you gonna deal with taking 22 to 23 units and you are in school 8 to 5, and a lot of the materials will be completely new or at least in a different level. And almost everyone in your class will be a quick learner.

First off, thank you everybody for your comments. You're all so kind and helpful!

Regarding the above comment: Yes, I have thought about it. And yes, me and most other people do feel there's a lot to be learned for the DAT and pressure is especially on when you have a bad past.

That has no correlation with dealing with 22 to 23 units 8-5...

Jen,

i have used their tutors and yes, i recommend sitting few hrs with them if you benefit from 1:1 teaching. yet, $3,500 seems too high. what i did was that i spent $1000 on the class and to use the center which were very helpful (useing the resources and studying with other DAT students... not to mention the competition with MCAT people). then i asked for private tutoring which was only $100 per hour (it was the discounted price since i was a Kaplan student). so, i paid them $800 for 8 hrs, but since i gave the teacher a big gift, she voluntarily gave me an extra 10 hrs... and i doubt if it was anything illegal.. i brough te gift to the center and gave it to her in front of the director... all the tutoring was also done at the center.

good luck to you.
