Any of you have experience working for Kaplan in this capacity? Can you tell me a little about it (pay/hours/selection process)? Was it overall a good or bad experience for you?

My cousin tutored SAT for Kaplan in her gap year, she said it was OK, she got about 10 hours of classes a week at $20/hr and got paid for preparing for the classes as well for like 10 hours a week (at minimum wage). It's not bad, but why wouldn't you tutor MCAT? Most people do that, and teach SAT/DAT/GMAT etc so they can have more hours.

Yes, you can work as few hours as you want, but most people want more hours, not less... Yes to the second question, no idea to the last 2.

I'm about to start teaching for Princeton Review because they offered me a lot more money. Salary depends on location, but Kaplan offered me $22/hour. Princeton starts at $25/hour, and with bonuses, I'll be making $30/hour...

Haha, so I'll admit something embarrassing. It's been two years since I took the MCAT, so I'm a bit... rusty.. I took that test and scored a 50%. Still got the job two days after I submitted the application. The selection process was super quick. Luckily for my students, I'll be studying a lot beforehand, and plus going through training. 😛 Don't be turned off by the test.

TPR took forever to get back to me after I took their test, whereas Kaplan called me right away...plus the fact that I used mainly Kaplan to study for my standardized tests= me teaching for them instead of TPR. I don't currently tutor, but you get paid about the same as if you were teaching a whole class, you can teach whenever your schedule allows, and the length of your contract is pretty dependent on how long you want to work (in my experience anyway...most of the teachers disappear after they get accepted to medschool or whatever).

You can also hold tutoring sessions at the test center if you're freaked about meeting students outside class. it's a pretty good deal if you like to teach 🙂

What are the courses like? I never took one myself, in fact I didn't really think you could do much to study for the SAT aside from taking a couple of practice tests and memorizing vocabulary. Seems like a good way to finally make it seem like my damn SAT score was worth anything. What do they consider having done well on these standardized tests anyway?

They told me they do (I start training this weekend, so I imagine these details will emerge then), but I don't know how many hours they will pay for or at what pay rate.

I know that Kaplan does, and I think they told me they'll pay me for equivalent time outside of class (i.e. if class time =2.5 hours, prep time = 2.5 hours).

During the training period, I do get paid, but only $7/hr

I only know pay rates for Kaplan, but I think that SAT teaching was around ... okay, now I forget... maybe $14/hr?? And then MCAT was $22/hr

I think the GMAT got paid the most.

And to teach, I think you need to get a 90% score within the past 5 years or something. It's listed on their website, I believe.

A friend of mine taught for them - she said that a lot of the kids were only there because their parents were making them go, but she got paid pretty well.

5 weeks? Uhh... I actually don't know how long my training is, but I only have two days of training scheduled (4 hrs/day). That's a good question...

Yikes TPR for mcats pays 20/hr last i checked.

Also TPR training is only 3 days but its pretty heavy in hours. We also are expected to have certain scores and can be rejected after training.

You can also get health/life insurance through Kaplan. And a 401k where they match what you put in dollar for dollar. I haven't done either since I'm not teaching right now (just proctoring til my schedule calms down) and I still have insurance, but my mom says it's a good deal, haha 🙂

And just to clear things up..new Kaplan MCAT teachers start at $20/hr (say my old paychecks).

Kaplan has standardized new-teacher pay at 15/hr for any clasms. You make it through that class (not one session but an entire course) and you get a raise. Tutoring is 21-25 depending on test. They pay you $7/hr for preptime (up to 3 hours/1 hour of lecture per week).

I teach 1 MCAT class right now and 1 SAT class. I have 9 hours in class and about 25 out of class but can teach less or more depending on what you want and how busy your center is. You can also arrange tutoring. I think it's a very flexible job. They have classes all year round pretty much and they let you choose which courses you want to teach. You can teach year-round or just a few courses each year. They also have benefits for part-time employees which is awesome (if you're in the market).

Kaplan will let you teach only a section or two. I'm teaching for Kaplan and I scored high enough to teach in verbal and PS but I think they're going to let me teach BS even though I only made a 10. I told them I'd be happy to teach bio but I've long forgotten all the orgo.

Finally,

Something I can contribute to! I tutored SAT for Kaplan (and still do though I'm not tutoring anyone right now). When I tutored you got paid 7.5/hr prep or training rate and 18/hr for teaching/tutoring. Not too bad. And definitely fun, I loved working with students so that was a plus. Also, doing a bunch of random math problems or answering usage and grammar questions helped keep me mind sharp and me hands out of trouble 🙂. Nah but it is a ton of fun working with students and you get compensated well for your time even if you don't work many hours. Also I will say that the quality of your training and your center and your entire experience depends almost 95% on the center director. We had a nice one so I enjoyed the experience. Good luck!

Also - I chose Kaplan because of the great discount I got on MCAT stuff (since Kap had a much better center and MCAT prep in my area) and was glad on both counts because our center was much much better than the TPR center nearby for both teaching and taking courses.
