I will be going to KCOm next fall and I'm hoping some current students can help me out. I am thinking about getting a blackberry curve but I wanted to see if any students at KCOM had any opinions of it. Have you used any applications? Do you wish you had a PDA instead or do you use the curve like your PDA?

If you go to a different school please feel free to comment as well.

Any advice on phones would be sweet. Thank you.

I got in on the SERO deal with sprint, and got an HTC Touch. The only thing I use it for (other than the phone and google maps) is getting my e-mail away from home. I also sync my calendar, so my school schedule is readily available. You can get a PDA with unlimited internet for a cheaper monthly rate than a blackberry, so I would go with the PDA (get outlook too, that way you can sync your calendar).

The 3rd generation iPhone is supposed to be coming this summer, and I am seriously looking into this as well.

See you next year!

Alot of people use smartphones here. You are gonna hear a million different opinions. Honestly it comes down to your decision. I use a Storm, I love it. People use iPhones, they love it. Curves are used and people love them. Some people just use the ipod touch. You can get by without one but they do make it easy to get info whenever you want.

The above is true. One of reason I recommend a PDA phone with Sprint is that we just got EVDO Rev. A here in Kirksville. This means lightning fast internet, mail, etc. Examples of good Sprint phones would be the Touch Pro and the Touch Diamond. Again, this is my opinion.

I have a Blackberry Curve and love it. I do have epocrates on it but I do use a PDA on rounds. I like the full internet on the Curve.

I like the full internet on the Curve.

because we NEVER use it for surfing during our downtime, it's always ONLY for school related information!

hehehe... 😉

LOL.. I have it on rounds so when my attending asks me something I am able to check the internet whereever we are and dont have to go back to the nurses station.

and of course I NEVER check my facebook...

ok, I guess I'll write a serious note too...

I do like my blackberry. Having access to my email is really nice when I'm doing long days. Especially this year while trying to set up interviews and such.

Next year, having long days, it'll be nice that I can text easily and quickly to my wife. The QWERTY keyboard is nice, and I've gotten fairly quick at typing. I don't neccisarily have the time to check my voicemail, but if my wife needs to get ahold of me and get me a message, a text takes like 15 seconds to read...

Just make sure that your hospital has coverage where you'll be working...

That is the bigger issue than anything. You have to check to make sure the service will work at the hospital or if you plan on being in specific regions. I have ATT or whatever they changed it to now and I rarely have service in hospitals. I have the blackberry curve and like it well enough, but it does get slow sometimes and has had some issues. The random dialing thing does happen quite a bit.

iphone user myself, but you blackberry users (except the storm) should check out
www.vlingo.com

...lets you control the BB by voice, even text and email

I have to agree with rddoms, I am on the SERO plan with Sprint as well. I have a Treo and I couldn't be happier with it. Internet is very fast here with EVDO and there are a ton of medical programs compatible with Palm.

Plus you can't really beat the price. Unlimited data (internet, texts, picture mail), free nights/weekends, free mobile to mobile, 500 minutes a month- all for $30/month. Welcome to KCOM!

Ihave the same plan. Not to many people know about SERO with sprint. You really can't ask for anything better.

If you don't have it already, check out the program called PDAnet, it is 35., but to me it is priceless. This programs allows you to use your phone as a modem, and thus since we have unlimited internet...it is free! Anywhere you can get a signal on your phone, you will have access to the internet. It's really nice when there is a power outage, and you can get on the net with a charged laptop.

That is too bad, you can 'tether' your phone (make it function as a modem) for free. It takes a second or two to change some settings, and you have unlimited mobile broadband. The one problem is that Sprint will disconnect your service if you are using 'too much' bandwidth. Use it with discression.

And Royal, they have bumped the cost a little, I believe. Good luck with Phys on friday.

I have been using my phone as a modem for probably a year. Your right about sprint raising flags, but as long as you are not downloading video, large amounts of music, etc..., you should not have a problem.
