I just turned 23...

As for breaks, go to KCOM website and look at the college catalog under student services...there is a calander in there for next year. It looks like we get a spring break and also a few weeks in the summer.
 
as far as breaks go at kcom, you get 1 wk at thanksgiving, 2 wks at xmas, 1 wk in late feb/early mar and then 5 wks of summer vacation.

Don't get too worried just yet- everyone was gone for spring break (public schools were out last week) or are at OCCTIC until Wed. night (3/17). So I wouldn't be too surprised if the adcom hasn't even MET since you interviewed! 😉

i'm holding on.i've been dreaming every night (since the interview got done) about either being in kirksville or receiving a rejection letter.it is crazy!

I'm trying not to sound too anxious but they got off spring break the day i interviewd (03/08). it was the first day of the fourth quarter.what's OCCTIC?

i am beleiving that they have a lot of back up to catch on!
 
Did anyone else get the email saying your deposit wasn't received? That was scary. I guess it was just a glitch in the system.

Has anyone received any mailings from KCOM yet? I haven?t gotten anything but I feel like some stuff should be coming in? just want to make sure I?m not missing out due to my crazy mailing address.
When does everyone plan on moving to Kirksville?

Yes, KCOM mailed out an info packet that I received last week. It has important dates and other info that will help us in our transition. If you don't receive it by the end of next week, I would call to see where it is. :horns:

i called up KCOM again today and still no answer.i was told that they may not even had a chance to review my file yet.so all of you who said that they must be too busy were right.waiting impaitiently to be an 'official KCOMer for class of 2008'.

I'm still anxiously waiting also but I interviewed just a week ago, so I know that it'll be another week or two since you interviewed a week before me.

I know, this waiting game is nerve-wracking (sp?). I just found out I that I got accepted to VCOM and I have 2 weeks to send in the deposit. What's more is that I have another interview for TUCOM in April...

i called KCOM this friday...still no answer.anyone else heard anything?
 
For those of you who have already found housing and live out of state, how did you go about it? I'm not nuts about taking time off work to spend more time and money driving/flying to Kirksville to check out my options, but it seems like it's the only thing to do. Other than living in the student housing on campus, but that's probably already full and besides, I can find a cheaper house online. Did you guys go down there, or actually just find listings online or thru the school and trust those?
 
My wife and I will be flying over to look for a place...This is the sort of situation where everyone from out of state needs to "suck it up" and look at the actual places for rent. KCOM also states on their website that they recommend everyone to look before they put a deposit down or sign a rental agreement. I am sure this is from students that were extremely unhappy about the places they rented....good luck, I know how ya feel :horns:
 
Does anyone happen to have the federal school code for KCOM? I tried to look it up but only got one for "kirksville area technical center"? I can just call the finaid office tomorrow, but if anyone's got it that would be great so I can send this baby off tonight!
 
Did anyone else receive the housing packet in the mail today?

Its pretty informative...houses for rent are cheap!

Any recommendation on where to stay or where NOT to stay from current students?

I can't really say where to live and where not to live. All I can say is make sure you look and inspect the house or apartment before signing the lease. When I came last year to look at houses, there were some really bad ones that were in the packet/website.

I came to Kirksville last April to look at houses and found a great house in a great location. Just look around.

I'm a 2nd yr at KCOM. Does the school still have their own private forum for admits through stillnet.com or is this the forum most people use? The reason I ask is b/c I'll be doing rotations in OH next year and I need to sell some stuff before I move.

As far as places to live in the 'ville, I live in the student apts and I haven' t had any problems. It's nice being a 3 min walk from class in the morning. The apts are a little more expensive than the town average since they're right across the street from the school.
 
Can anyone speak on the required preceptorship....I believe that there is a required rural medicine preceptoship at the end ot the first year........

Yes there is, and it is absolutely awesome for most people. I had a GREAT preceptor as did many of the classmates. You get to chose what region of Missouri you want to do the preceptorship in, and they match you. It's a great opportunity and my only complaint was that it wasn't longer (it's two weeks). And...I don't even want to do rural and/or family medicine!
 
A two week long clinical experience after 1st year sounded awesome when I first heard about it! I am looking forward to it!!:clap: I hope we get to do quite a bit during those 2 weeks.

im moving prolly a few days before orientation week begins. i found out i couldnt get student housing . what are u guys doing for housing, those that are living by themselves?
 
Well I am hoping to live by myself in a rental unit, hopefully a house, but apt or duplex will work. There are online newspapers and I have been looking everywhere, but it's really hard to find a house on a computer. I really don't know what I'm going to do either...
 
I do have another question: What is the rental pattern in Kirksville? I mean when do most people sign leases and such?

I know at my school now. Most leases get signed in November for the next fall.

If I go down to Kirksville in June, Will I be able to find any available units?

DO NOT RENT SIGHT UNSEEN!!!! I cannot emphasize this enough. There are complete rat holes here. The city just passed a rental property ordinance but it hasn't gone into effect yet...you could end up with a really crappy place if you don't come here in person to find a place to live.

I know several KCOMers are coming to town this spring/summer to look. Waiting until the last minute could leave you with very few options since you are competing with Truman State students as well as KCOMers.

If you absolutely cannot be here early to find a place, then you may want to go through a local realtor (Century 21 is the best, IMO). There are reliably nice apartments/condos to rent such as Woodwinds and MedRow, but beware of any houses near campus...they are often very slummy and barely standing and you'd be surprised at the rent- $1000 for a 4 bedroom house that has no air conditioning and holes in the floor, for example. You might think that that's a bargain if you find 3 other people to share it, but you could find a nicer, smaller, newer place a little farther from campus for $500 that still has room for 2 people. (And remember that KV is a SMALL town, so farther away from campus is only a mile and a half).

As for rental pattern- spring is THE time to find a place for the fall. You shouldn't have too much trouble waiting until June, though. If you have a pet or a family, start looking very early as suitable places are difficult to find.

I really wanted a house, but may instead have to go with an apartment. I'm sick of apartments.

I wonder how getting a realtor works? Is it expensive...?
 
I totally agree with Runtita. When I came last April, I was shocked at some of the houses that were shown to us (my wife and I). But the last house we saw that day was a nice house with a large yard. It is only $380 a month. If you come early enough, you can get a nice place to live at a good price.

one thing to consider is that when the financial aid office establishes your budget (max amount you can have in loans) they assume about $550/month including all utilities (phone, electricity, gas in winter-which isn't cheap) so think about that as well when looking at places to rent. there are a lot of my friends who only pay $400ish for rent but then get strapped with utility bills that put them well over the $550. and, that budget is all you can get...

as to the houses around campus... i have a lot of classmates who rent houses around here. they might not look great on the outside (not falling down), but they are, for the most part, nice on the inside and are cheap. one of my friends has the coolest 2br house that she pays $350 for and it's awesome!! point is, there are nice houses around campus to rent as well. don't get turned off just because they're near. one thing to keep in mind is that most of the houses around here are older. so exterior might be worse for the wear than the interior. however, ask the tenant living there now about utilities in january and february. it gets pretty cold and a lot of the houses are very well insulated.

the best thing about coming to kirksville to look for a place is that you can get a feeling for what you should expect for $350. a 2br house for $600 sounded like a great deal to me coming from home, but when i got here, it became obvious that they were charging WAY too much in this market.

One funny thing about renting a house/apartment in Kirksville that I noticed last year was that some of the units will be listed as "near KCOM" or "on the other side of town" etc. My house was listed as "on the other side of town." It is a about a 5 minute drive to the school. :laugh:

Anyhow, if anyone is moving here this summer and needs/wants some help moving into the house/apartment, post it on this thread or the thread that the school will be establishing. Me and/or others may be able to help you out.
 
It also depends on what you expect... I have 2 kids and 2 cats and a husband and we need a larger place with an air conditoner and that isn't shedding lead paint left and right.

There ARE decent places to rent around campus. But if you don't come in person and see for yourself, you might be stuck with a rathole.

As for getting a realtor, just call or e-mail them. They work for the landlords, so you should not have to pay anything.

And have you looked at KCOM's list of off-campus housing?
 
In addition, I went through a realtor to view a few houses, and those houses should have been condemned. (Ironically they were more expensive than the nicer ones that I looked at, but they were close to school). Then I went through the KCOM website and found a great place.
 
I am not sure if any of all have heard or came across it, but the school has the discussion board set up on the stillnet.

Well, I made a mistake. 🙄 The discussion board is up for the Mesa, AZ students. Last year, we didn't have access to those forums. I guess they still haven't set up our discussion board (class of 2008).

Hi guys, the discussion forum has been up for almost a week...At least that's when I received my passwords for stillnet and my.atsu. There is quite a bit of info on stillnet and I'm glad we get to look through it and get used to it before classes....

Have you gotten onto the forum? I still only have access to last year's forums. (Also, the Mesa forum I had access to this morning is now no longer available to me 🙄 ).

Do you know if the Arizona rotation is preceptor or hospital based? or either depending on a lottery after you get accepted to this rotation area?

Have you already made your final payment?

I just made mine yesterday and I was wondering if they were waiting for you to finish paying up before they got the financial aid and password thing going.
 
Good question, When does financial aid come out??

If you can't tell, I wasn't really paying attention druing our fin aid meeting at interviews. 😀

I hope someone was.
 
I called the office of f. aid and they said they would be sending out info on it to our new email accounts, sometime this week. 🙄

The Arizona rotation is preceptor based (like the one in Colorado). More than likely, your doc will be in a clinic of his/her own. I'm interested in this site as well and that's the info I've gathered from the second years here.

The drawback to AZ is that there is a very real possibility that you could live on one side of Phoenix and have to drive to the other side for your rotation site (1.5 hrs each way). That's not terribly exciting.
