KCOM Class of 2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I got into KCOM and I am so happy about it. The school is wonderful from what I saw during my interview day. The school really looked past my subpar grades and MCAT and saw what other experiences I had to offer them. They believed that I could become a good physician when my numbers showed otherwise. I'm almost sure I 'm going to attend KCOM bc it has so many good things to offer. KCOM is a hidden treasure!

To everyone out there - apply early!!!!! It truly helps!

KCOM is a great school and a great community!

twaspatz,

Congrats on your acceptance and maybe we'll meet in 2004! 😉

I've been living in KV for 3 years and I love it- there is a real sense of community here. I like being able to talk with my neighbors and seeing someone I know every time I'm at the grocery store. Sure, there isn't good shopping and we don't get many good concerts, etc., but Columbia is 90 miles away and Truman State brings in several good performances/year with their Lyceum series.

Also, we have learned to create our own entertainment here by having gourmet and game nights with our friends. I used to live in Albuquerque, and even though KV can't compare in climate, size, or culture, my personal relationships have greatly improved and I am a happier person. Go figure! I suppose life is what you make of it. 😉

Fellow KCOM 2008 Classmate here, congratulations to all who have been accepted.

Halo fellow K-COMer's!!!!!!! I vascillated but finally decided to attend K-COM because I knew that it was the right place for me even tho I had qualms about moving to the midwest. I cannot wait till the coming August now that I've finally decided!!!

Much love!

Hail, Monkeyguts and cardiolog! 🙂

Are you guys getting the Still-Bright scholarship? That'll be a very nice addition to attending KCOM.

I'm not- GPA is .04 too low. 🙁

I tried to talk them into rounding up! 😉

(i know this is OT, so i'll keep it short 'n sweet, whats the cutoff for the scholarship?)

edit: nm, I just found it on their page. Hope to be joining you guys next application cycle. congrats to all of you!

DOH! My GPA is actually .02 too low! OUCH!

even if we can't get the scholarship we'll be saving big bucks on food and rent living in MO

Congrats on your acceptance to KCOM.

The one thing I can tell you about my school is that everything they told you on interview day is absolutely true. This school takes a great deal of pride in its students and will do anything to see that your class will succeed and become very good physicians.🙂 🙂

Master KCOmer's,
Do you guys think sharing an apt. with someone your first year would be a good idea or is living alone? I heard that living alone is better from one, cuz you don't have to deal with other people's ish and get adjusted to them. But, is it lonely? I know that it's diff for each person, but I'd like your opinions. Thnx!
Also, a car isn't necessary, right?

I'd think a car IS necessary, otherwise you're in for a long walk to Hy-Vee (grocery store) or Wal-Mart.

As for living with someone, if I were single, I'd live alone so I wouldn't have to leave my own house to get away from someone bugging me. Just my opinion, though. You will definitely save $$ if you share a place.

I'll second that Runtita.

i'm hoping to go to kcom. i still have a while tho, don't take the mcat till april.

congratulations to all of you who have been accepted to KCOM. I am very excited too, and am almost 100% sure I will be there with ya in the fall, just gotta see how things go with my in-state school (I have an interview there on 11/17). It is MSUCOM. KCOM and MSUCOM are the top 2 osteopathic schools in the nation in my opinion, so it will be a tough decision, but I am very impressed by what I have learned from KCOM, and MSU has a lot of work ahead of them to pull me away. Everyone who has written on this post seems to be real cool, and it seems like I will have an awesome group of classmates if I attend. Best of luck to us all!!

Gonnabe - you gotta go to KCOM! i promise you it'll be more chill than MSU

Gonnabe- I am currently at KCOM but am from MI, so I know exactly what you are going through. Let me just say that you will NOT regret it if you come to KCOM.

hey aberfly, just curious to know what part of MI you are from, and where you went for undergrad?

gonnabe- I sent you a PM.

I am so excited that I got an interview invitation from KCOM.
But what in the world? How did you guys get there?

I will be flying out from Birmingham, AL.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

I flew into Kansas City because it was the cheapest flight for me by far. Then I rented a car and drove the 3 or 4 hours to Kirksville. I hadn't been on a road trip in awhile so I didn't mind the drive so much.

I took the a tiny jet from St. Louis to Kirksville. It was a rough ride..scary as hell.

And for everyone interviewing in the winter months, those small flights into Kirksville are often grounded due to fog/freezing rain/snow/etc. So you might end up having to rent a car to drive the last bit any way.

Thanks for your great traveling tips.
I like you guys already.
I hope I get into KCOM.
😛

Sent in my deposit today, so I'm official!!!

What a rush!

Awesome to hear about KCOM and OSU-COM.

Well, I am a student at KCOM. I am from Oklahoma and applied to both OU and OSU-COM as well. I understand what you are you going through with making the decision. When it came down to it, I just decided on which city would be the best to live in. (Also, I am doing the MS program at KCOM). Both schools are great, and the two best D.O. schools in my personal opinion. If you need any feedback on my experiences/opinions feel free to email me.

Just to let you know, I've set up a page for the KCOM Class of 2008 here.

The page has links to area realtors, schools, etc., and weather. And a tagboard for messages.

🙂

Hey everyone! Congrats on your interviews and acceptances. I'm a 2nd year at KCOM - if you have any questions I might be able to help with, let me know. This is really an excellent place to be. It's tough work, but an incredibly rewarding experience! Take care and best wishes.

Although not quite to the application stage yet, I am from Missouri and have visited KCOM several times and I think you all made an AWESOME choice, it is a great school and every student I've talked to has loved it there. CONGRATULATIONS EVERYONE

Hi everyone!! I guess it's time for me to join the party...I was accepted to KCOM in December and I am VERY excited to be attending! This school impressed me to no end. They were all great, from the admissions staff to the students to the faculty. KCOM has an excellent reputation, and besides, I felt like I was meant to go there. After the interview day, I knew I would attend if I was accepted. That is the main item for selecting a school: comfort. If you feel like you will fit in and excel academically, go to that school!

I am looking forward to meeting all of you in August!:horns:

Welcome drhodz and congratulations

bump= a post to "bump" the thread to the top of the list to keep it active

Hi all! Just thought I would share that I sent in my deposit on Saturday!! It feels more "real" now, and I'm sure it will be even more as the months go by...

Oh, and "bump"

Do we have any Basketballers yet? 😕 Or racquetballers?

Just wondering...

hi guys,
how you been? just wanted to keep this post alive. im getting pretty excited to start, and a bit fearful as well of all the work thats to come. what you guys been up to?

i play a bit of racquetball!!! any tennis players ?

Hey cardiolog, I play a little tennis....I too am excited to start:clap: August seems far away, but I know that the time will fly!

I just received my interview invitation today and picked the February 16th date. Sounds like there are already a lot of acceptances, I hope there are a few more seats open for me!!!!!

PS: I'vbe been known to play a little r-ball in my time.

as a first year here at KCOM let me extend congratulations to all of you. it's a great place and the school is outstanding. take time to relax before you get here... nothing you can do between now and august will prepare you for med school. it's challenging, but you also feel a great sense of accomplishment when you realize that you can, in fact, get it done.

if any of you have questions feel free to ask me. i'll be happy to answer them if i can.

If it's all right to ask (I'm a premed), I just wanted to know what kind of things are around. I keep reading in the forums and the interview feedbacks, that KCOM "is in the middle of nowhere", etc.. KCOM is kinda portrayed as small rural town.

So, I wanted to know what kind of things are around KCOM. For example, movie theaters, stores, public transportation (is a car really needed?) etc... Outdoor activities such as hiking, bicycling, etc...

I just want to get a general idea of how the town is.

It would help me a great deal if you can name a popular movie depicting the type of town. (ex. Running Bride?)

I would really appreciate it very much. I'm just trying to get as much information as I can before I apply. Thanks in advance. 🙂
