I am interested in everyone's opinion: I want to specialize in orthopedic surgery or general surgery. These are the schools I am considering. Of the five schools, which school would give me the biggest advantage to enter a competitive surgical residency (assuming that I were to get the EXACT same grades at each school)? Please rank then, based on your personal opinion, by national reputation...

I am thinking about trauma surgery, and for that reason, I have opted for GA-PCOM. Not because they have some big reputation for producing surgeons, as they have never graduated a class, but because they are in Atlanta, where there are a couple major trauma centers that I could easily rotate through, and I also plan on volunteering at Grady Memorial in my first two years.

I am doing my best to create this opportunity for myself, but ultimately, it will be based on my performance. In the end, that is what really matters once you're in school. Where you go is probably not a big deal.

Here goes the debate (this is only biased based on my personal opinion:laugh:)...

1. TCOM
2. OSUCOM
3. OUCOM
4. CCOM
5. KCOM

This list is based on reputation and opinion from others I have heard. Despite what school you go to getting into a competitive surgery residency is on you. It should be noted however that PCOM has many surgery residency programs, more than any other DO school that I know of!

Unfortunately i did not apply to PCOM. I understand that it is my performance that will partially determine where I attend my residency. Let's be honest though, some schools have a better match list than others. Probably due to its location, 85% of WVSOM graduates continue onto family practice/IM residencies. Generally, these are considered to be a less competitive field compared to neurosurgery, orthopedic surgery, etc. Specifically, only a handful (approximately 5-6 people) of WVSOM graduates attend a surgical residency. In comparison, CCOM has at least approx. 15 (and maybe more) people continue onto competitive surgical residencies. I will acknowledge that a medical education is what you make of it, but I also believe that the school you attend (whether it is consider "competitive" and it has a "positive" reputation) will also play a factor in where you will place for residency. With that being said, how would everyone rank these five schools? TT and Patriots, thank you for your comments... Much appreciated.

No ****. Read this and tell me what you think WVSOM's goal is...

Why does everyone assume that everyone who goes to med school wants to do derm or rads or CT surgery? Most of these WVSOM grads probably wanted to go into primary care from the very beginning. I promise you that if I went there and wanted to do surgery, I would be in a surgery residency when I graduated. Match lists mean jack **** to someone's individual goals.
