I spoke to Diana in the Financial Aid department today and she said it was not a problem to leave the local address blank.

Awesome! Thanks for letting me know. 🙂

I cannot believe we are roughly 3 months away from starting medical school!!! I am so EXCITED!! 🙂 And I CANNOT wait to MEET EVERYBODY!

I'm on the same page. :biglove:

just wanted to let everyone know there is a group on facebook titled "KCUMB class of 2011"

Spice have you decided on KCUMB, or are you still waiting to hear back from your state school?

I've decided on KCUMB, Harvey, and I am fully on board. I plan on seeing you all in the fall as a fellow member of the KCUMB class of 2011. :biglove:

That is great news. Congrats on a wise choice. 😀

Ok, so quick, weird question:
I know biochem is required, and i'm in it right now. This probably won't apply to me, but what if I got a C- in it, do you think that would still be ok?

THanks,
jamie

No, I don't think it'll be okay. Biochemistry is a required class and all required classes need to be a C, or better.

Re: KCUMB's website:

Satisfactory completion, with a grade of C or higher, of the following college courses, including laboratory work:

English Composition and/or Literature 6 Semester Hrs
Chemistry 13 Semester Hrs
BioChemistry (in addition to 13 hrs. of Chemistry) 3 Semester Hrs
Physics 8 Semester Hrs
Biological Sciences 12 Semester Hrs
Genetics (in addition to 12 hrs. of biological sciences) 3 Semester Hrs

Total: 45 Semester Hrs

Re: KCUMB's website:

Oh wow! I really hope you don't get a C-! I feel so lucky that I go to a school that gives only A, B, C, D, F. Those "-"s can really screw things up. 🙁

I'm working on a C right now in Biochem as well...just gotta get by right?

Here's heads up. I got another packet from KCUMB today. It includes the quarterly journal, a letter from Phil Byrne, and a checklist of things that they have not recieved from me yet. The letter says we will be getting a matriculation packet in a couple weeks. Enjoy!

Thanks. I just got mine today. There's lots of stuff I haven't sent yet, but it's mainly related to my medical physical and immunization verification. I'm still waiting on my third Hep B vaccine to complete the process.

I noticed that the letter asks for health insurance verification. I didn't receive any indication on how to proceed with this. Did I miss something?

Nevermind. I just called the admissions office and they said that all I had to do was to send them a photocopy of my insurance card. So, for anyone else who has the same question, that's the answer. 👍

spiced, Do you pay for your own insurance? Because my current health insurance will expire when I leave work here. I'll need to purchase a new plan in KC.

I went to the doctor today for the H&P and shots, but I didn't bring my immunization record with me, so I'll have to get that all together before I can finish up those forms.

This morning, I sent in my Financial Aid packet, and I asked for the MAXIMUM amount of financial aid, which is scary!!

Anyone who is shopping for apartments right now, please let me and anyone else know of any great locations/deals that you have stumbled upon. Find housing right now is my TOP priority!

spiced, Do you pay for your own insurance? Because my current health insurance will expire when I leave work here. I'll need to purchase a new plan in KC.

To answer your question, yes, I do have my own health insurance. I am currently subscribed to Golden Rule, a company that is associated with United Healthcare. They seemed very reasonable. I am paying $103 per month for a $25 co-pay and $2500 deductible for office visits. It's not the best because having such a high deductible means that the insurance pretty much only covers you for emergencies, but it'll do for now. One of the great things about this plan is that it allows me to switch states of residence for my network.

Yeah, my health forms won't be done until the end of June, or at the latest early July. I going to have my last Hep B vaccine shot at the beginning of June, but I have to wait close to a month and to get my blood drawn again to check the Hep B titer, which is a requirement, if I'm not mistaken. Then it'll be complete and ready to send out.

This morning, I sent in my Financial Aid packet, and I asked for the MAXIMUM amount of financial aid, which is scary!!

Yeah, I also requested the full amount. In fact, I just checked the USPS online tracking and KCUMB has my FA packet already. I'm now waiting for my award letter.

Anyone who is shopping for apartments right now, please let me and anyone else know of any great locations/deals that you have stumbled upon. Find housing right now is my TOP priority!

I'm looking for a place myself! If I find anything good deals, I'll certainly let you in on them.

anyone have any advice on the best lender for student aid, i've narrowed down my choices to THE(northstar), Bank of America, and MEDLOANS, reality is starting to hit, thats for sure

As far as good deals, if CT isn't your ideal place to live check out these websites. I found some great places that really interested me before I settled on CT, mostly based on the location and convenience.

www.apartments.com
http://www.kcpremierapts.com
www.rent.com

Those websites were really helpful for me.

Thank you, Harvey. I've checked out the first two, but not the last. There are a lot of good options in the KC metro area, that's for sure.

Pack, how much were you looking to pay a month? I found a few places that I really liked. I could send you the info on them if you are interested.

Any reason your not going with KCUMB?

No more than $600 for a 1 or 2 bedroom - preferably closer to $500 or less. Any suggestions you have are welcomed.

Any current KCUMB students out there who own a mac? How has it been using the windows-specific applications on the apple?

Thanks.

I use a Mac and am wondering the same thing...have you heard any specific info from KCUMB regarding computer requirements, or has anyone for that matter?

Thanks!

For those of you who are looking for apartments, don't you hate when you find a nice place for a decent price only to find out that it is only available for affordable housing and that the standard rent will be an additional $100-150? That is something that just kills me.

Does anyone know if KCUMB is planning on getting one of those laproscopic simulators?

Ya, I have spoken with Tyler, main guy in IT, and he says that he has no direct experince using Parallels or Boot Camp.
Here's what he says:

"The applications are network based. They are available only on the University's student use computer for the most part. There is one application that is written by our Pathology department, but it is only available for Windows machines. It has not be tested on any of the cross-platform environment for the Mac, but I believe it would work fine."

I am considering a Mac, I know other med students who have no trouble with using windows platforms. I am not sure, really. I would love to have a mac!

If I learn more, I'll let you know. Please do the same.

Best,

josh

Hi All,

I know that KCUMB will be sending out a roomate list of some sort in late may. However, I have no idea what information that will entail. I am an inpatient person, so I thought I would put feelers out there now for roomates! I have never done this before, so out of pure lack of experience I will post my stats and what I am looking for!

I am:
-30 year old male- I am from Seattle, WA, interested in Emergency Medicine.
-with 11 year old dog (border collie, if you couldn't guess)
-will be living off-campus in a house or townhouse, with fenced backyard.
-allergic to cats (sorry)
-other dogs maybe welcome, sometimes two is one too many.
-enjoy the outdoors very much (climbing, skiing, hiking, running, etc.)
-Music lover (i.e. enjoy sharing music!!!)
-enjoy having friends over for dinners and drinks (after studying, of course).
-Definitely sociable, friendly, CLEAN, and easy to get along with.
-Looking for a 2 or 3 bedroom house with one other person, so there will be room for an office, guest room, etc.

You are:
-Near my age (give or take a few years) Male or Female.
-quiet, with a strong desire to have social gatherings once and a while.
-dog friendly, no cats
-easy to get along with, share food, bills, etc.

I suppose the easiest way to contact me is email:

[email protected].

If anyone is interested please contact me, we can simply chat and see what comes of it.

I'll be in KC May 18-21 looking for places to live.

Best,

.j.

I use a Mac and am wondering the same thing...have you heard any specific info from KCUMB regarding computer requirements, or has anyone for that matter?

Thanks!

When you filled out your FA packet, do you remember seeing that there is a computer allowance? You have to specifically ask for this allowance to be added to your FA award, but you have to BUY the computer 1st, send in paperwork, and ask to be reimbursed via FA. Ok, so the point to all that was to say that if you call they send you one of the necessary pieces of paperworkto request it and it comes with PC and MAC specifications (both those required and recommended).

If anyone hears anything more about Mac compatibility with the KCUMB system, let me know or just post it here. I'd like to consider a Mac, but not if its going to be an extra headache at every turn.

To all you hopefull MAC users/buyers:

I don't have a lot to add to the conversation but will say that having a MAC should not be a problem if that is what you want/like/are use to. I now several of my fellow COB students have MACs and have had no problems that I'm aware of. Additionally, I know of a few of the professors that use MACs as well. So bottom line, if you're worried about not being able to access things, I doubt you'll have a problem (no hate mail if i'm wrong!!).

Happy purchasing!

Anyone knows what is master promissory note?

Just a warning for those who are thinking of purchasing a new computer in the next few months. I just got my brand new lap-top with all the latest and greatest features. Unfortunately, it also came with Windows Vista. Looks great, a lot like Mac OS X but with no additional features when compared to XP. I have, already, had multiple problems with running software that vista can’t find “licensing information” on even though I have the rights to use it. Also, multiple devices (e.i. some palm pilots, MP3 players…) don’t have drivers out that support their use on vista. If you’re getting a new computer I would advise sticking with XP or going Mac.
The caveat—1. What I have experienced is only anecdotal evidence… with that said, I still hate Vista.
2. Generally, I suck when it comes to computers, but several acquaintances (a few who are on the “geek squad”, and other who know more than I do about computers) have not recommend Vista.
3. I have no clue as to what is “Mac friendly” through the college.

On a side note, was on facebook.com and found the group for our class... Outstanding!!!

Hmm...I just got a laptop with the Vistas platform and so far I like it. I'm sure it just varies from person to person. I was told that if you get plenty of memory and such, it should work fine.

Sounds promising, thanks for posting. I have a hard time believing there would be many problems with Macs. Worse comes to worse, I use Parallels or Boot Camp to run what I must. If profs and other COB students use it now with no prob, we should be the same. Thanks for the insight and I won't be sending any hate mail regardless 🙂

I have had no problems with lack of memory or slow processing. Just driver support and "licensing" issues... Otherwise, I have not had any problems vista... not even the dreaded blue screen of death.

Anyone knows what is master promissory note?

From www.macomb.edu/FinancialAid/glossary.asp :

The promissory note the student signs when borrowing a loan from the Federal Direct Stafford Loan program. When the student signs a Federal Direct Stafford promissory note, a binding legal document, he/she promises to repay the student loan(s). The note also includes important language about rights and responsibilities as a borrower. The Master Promissory Note covers both the Subsidized and Unsubsidized Direct Stafford loans.

I'm not sure if anybody has asked this already, but does KCUMB offer an undergraduate OMM/OMT fellowship? How does it work and how does one go about it? I'm curious.

Thanks. Should it be included in the fin aid packet. I dont think I had it in mine.

I think KCUMB sends that to you along with the award letter, after they have processed your KCUMB FA application, if you chose KCUMB as your Stafford lender. I don't know about other options. I think if you don't choose KCUMB as your Stafford lender, you will need to talk with other lenders about getting a note. I'm not sure about how to proceed with other lenders, however, because I chose KCUMB as my Stafford lender. Maybe someone else who didn't choose KCUMB, but some other financial institution/lender, can chime in about the process, including how to obtain a promissory note?

Anyway, sj786, if you are confused and require assistance, don't hesistate to call the FA office at KCUMB; they seem very friendly and helpful.

Good luck.

What do you mean by undergraduate? My brother just completed his OMT fellowship. He took time off between his 3rd and 4th year of clinicals to do it.

P.S. I love your avatar! I'm so excited for the book and movie to come out! 😉

Hey, BradenDO, thanks for answering. It's common jargon to refer to one's time in medical school itself as "undergraduate" medical education and one's time in residency as "graduate" medical education. Jargon aside, the OMT fellowship that your brother just completed is the fellowship I'm talking about. So, it sounds like the fellowship occurs between 3rd and 4th year, huh? How did he apply for it, if you don't mind me asking? I'm really wanting to do the extra training on OMT and to get good at it. Thanks!

P.S. I love your avatar! I'm so excited for the book and movie to come out! 😉

Thank you! I am, too. 👍

Braden does know more about this than me, but, YES, there is an OMT fellowship - KCUMB calls it the OPP fellowship.

KCUMB also has a research fellowship and an anatomy fellowship.

Personally, I'm interested in the OPP and the research fellowships, I think.

Here's what I found out through a search:

drchris33 said:
The OPP fellowship is not very competitive. You will not find many people wanting to spend an extra year, delaying graduation. But it was a great experience and I would do it again in a heart beat!

OPP 399 - UHS Fellowship in OP&P (E)
This elective experience is open only to students wishing to spend an additional year of study, teaching and research with the Family Medicine Department. Students wishing to explore this opportunity must apply during the last semester of the second year and be selected by the Family Medicine Department for the program. Once selected, Family Medicine Fellows will complete their third year clerkships before or after participating in the fellowship. The fellowship year is designed to give the student further experience with osteopathic principles and practice, teaching techniques and insights into research. Once completed, the students start/continue their clerkships. Family Medicine Fellows receive a monetary stipend and tuition for their fellowship year and one additional year. For more information, contact Dr. Kevin D. Treffer, OMM Coordinator.

So Spice, does that mean that the OPP fellowship waives your tuition for your 4th year and you get a stipend to live off of during the fellowship training?

I don't know for sure, Harvey, but it sure sounds like it from the description of the program in my prior post.

KCUMB said:

However, I think drchris33, BradenDO, and/or Pack, might be able to give a more definitive answer.

So Spice, does that mean that the OPP fellowship waives your tuition for your 4th year and you get a stipend to live off of during the fellowship training?

Harvey, I don't know anymore than spiced knows, but as drchris has said, few people will want to delay graduation for an extra year learning OMM, even fewer will want to do that and not be benefited in some other way - like a year taken off their tuition.

As I understand it, the opp fellowship requires a 5th year, but we'll only be accountable for 3 years of tuition. We'll also receive a stipend for the year that we complete the fellowship.

My brother just completed his OMT fellowship. He took time off between his 3rd and 4th year of clinicals to do it.

Wait...he's your brother? That is quite interesting. I guess I'll have to refrain from telling OMT horror stories from this year (kidding of course).

You'll be fine. Otherwise they'd have to discriminate between colleges who have an A/B/C system from those who have an A+/A/A- system. As long as you don't fail you shouldn't worry.

KCUMB also has a research fellowship and an anatomy fellowship.

Personally, I'm interested in the OPP and the research fellowships, I think.

Pack or Spice, any info on the research fellowship offered by KCUMB? I looked around on the website but couldn't find anything. I wonder if it is similar to the OPP fellowship as far as 5 years, but pay for 3 yrs of tuition + get a living stipend?

For those who are interested, here is information on the pathology fellowship:

KCUMB said:
PATH 399 - Off-Site Pathology Fellowship
This elective experience is available on a limited basis to those students wishing to spend an additional year of study, teaching and research with a Pathology Department at another college of medicine. Students wishing to explore this opportunity must seek approval by the Vice President for Academic Affairs/Dean during the last semester of their second year and apply to take a one-year leave of absence from KCUMB. Pathology Fellows participate in various teaching, clinical and research duties as determined by the visiting institution or program and as approved by KCUMB. Once the pathology fellowship is completed, students return to KCUMB and continue their third and fourth years of education.
