I think KCUMB sends that to you along with the award letter, after they have processed your KCUMB FA application, if you chose KCUMB as your Stafford lender. I don't know about other options. I think if you don't choose KCUMB as your Stafford lender, you will need to talk with other lenders about getting a note. I'm not sure about how to proceed with other lenders, however, because I chose KCUMB as my Stafford lender. Maybe someone else who didn't choose KCUMB, but some other financial institution/lender, can chime in about the process, including how to obtain a promissory note?

Anyway, sj786, if you are confused and require assistance, don't hesistate to call the FA office at KCUMB; they seem very friendly and helpful.

Good luck.

Thank you so much . I called their office today and said it will be included with the award letter 🙂

So Spice, does that mean that the OPP fellowship waives your tuition for your 4th year and you get a stipend to live off of during the fellowship training?

I'm pretty sure that's how it works...

Pack, what was the research fellowship you were talking about? Is it the research credits that Spice mentioned?

The way I understand it, is that all the fellowships work the same way and include the same benefits. I discussed the research fellowship with my interviewers and they spoke about the extra year and stipend with me.

IIII'MMMMM SOOOOO EEEXXXCCCIIIITTTEEEDDD. Anyway...coming from the great NW, I'm debating whether or not to bring my climbing things...(i'm guessing I can leave the crampons and ice tools..)...is there anyone out there interested in climbing so that it would maybe be worthwhile to bring my junk? (Sorry Braden...more garbage)...

That is something that I will have to seriously consider. Thanks for the info.

lol I'll let you use the closet in the dining area as your designated "climbing junk" storage space. 😉

You know you're going to come climbing with me sometime right? Better learn how to belay now..........you have no choice. :meanie:

Are there any hills to climb in KS/MO? Maybe take a road trip to Colorado? I know there are a few places in the midwest that have converted grain silos into climbing walls. That would be cool.

Yeah, I'd like to know about good places to climb as well. I've done some sport climbing and bouldering (I'm not into trad climbing--too much eq req'd) in the past. I found it very meditative. Besides, it's just good to get out into the natural surroundings and get my body moving. 😎

I have never been climbing before, but I would be open to try it out! 🙂

Haha! You're just lucky that I know what "belay" means! I suggest hiking...I think the only thing we have to climb in KC is our apartment building.

I'm glad we have such an active group! You guys will be a blast to hang out with!

Ummm, apparently the Ozarks aren't TOOOO bad. Central Missouri right?

Yeah, sport climbing is mainly my bag. I do a lot of alpine climbing around here but my buddy mainly does all the leading. (Trad-climbers...go ahead with the sport climber jokes, I'm a big boy, I can take it)

AAAnyways, we'll all go climbing. That's that.

It's a great way to put things back into perspective, a perfect respite from the moil of med school.

And Braden, we're going to be rappelling from the 9th floor of CT to get to class. Just to let you know...You're going to LOOOVE me as a roommate. :meanie:

I am more into backpacking/hiking. Wish we lived closer to the Rockies so we could take some weekend trips. I would love to roll out of my tent, look at the mountains and do some path/immuno studying. 😀

If you guys have questions, feel free to PM me. Or post them. I'm graduating in a week, but I'll be at a KCUMB Base Hospital for my internship in Michigan.

If you love the outdoors, you can get to some pretty scenery in about 3 hours in the Ozarks (southwestern Missouri). I'm just not sure about any climbing there...I know there is a lot of cliff diving though at Table Rock Lake, just make sure you bring someone interested in Emergency Medicine.

Like me...but just because I'm interested in EM...doesn't mean I know anything 😱 Well yeah, I heard the Ozarks are beautiful.

Yes, they are. They're perfect for HIKING! ...and caving, but I don't want to put any ideas into your head... 😛

Braden, is caving the same thing as spelunkering?

KCUMBers, here is a place that looks really cool. If anyone has been to San Diego, it reminds me of the Gas Lamp District.

http://www.powerandlightdistrict.com/

There are two fun areas to go to in KC--West Port and the Plaza. Each one has a lot of great restaurants and West Port has some great laid back bars. I wonder if these two spots are a part of the Power and Light District....

The power and light district will be really cool once it gets finished. Sorry to bring some bad news to everybody but currently it is in the construction phase. Hopefully it will be done during our time at KCUMB. I would have to agree with BradenDO that Westport and the Plaza (my personal fave) are some great places to go. There are also some good places scattered around KC that have their own local feel (Brookside, Parkville, etc). I can’t wait until the power and light district is done but for now there are some watering holes and great restaurants to take up some time.🙂

So, here is the Mac scopp: Most importantly, i just bought one... SWEET!
-you can buy one now, and apply for reimbursment before march 2008.
-i have also spoken with "erf" a few times over email, and it seems that a mac will not hinder us at all. there are plenty of pc available if we need them.
-also, as far as running a windows platform on your mac, don't do it. it defeats the purpose of having a mac, your machine immediately becomes succeptible to viruses... i.e. it is no longer a mac once you have windows on it.

happy computing!

Wow. thanks for that. Im doing the whole PC/Mac debate thing now, so its good to know that I'll be ok if I choose a Mac.

Thanks here also...I just got a Mac last year (love it) and wouldn't want to give it up! To anyone else debating, just do it. They are too simple to not use.

Are the lectures mandatory at KCUMB?

After paying over $40K per year, even if the classes are not mandatory - would you really not go? 😕

Some people have different styles of learning. So for some they might have better use of their time if they went over the lecture material themselves rather than sitting in a lecture hall. You also have to remember that we can listen to the mp3 recordings of the lectures on our own time. I don't think this is like high school where you ditch a class to be cool or go hang out. I think most people going into medical school know the seriousness of the situation and that they must do well. Forcing someone to be in class goes against the whole idea of academia imo.

I agree with this. On the other hand, I hear that the attendence rate is high at KCUMB.

I was not trying to insinuate that someone would ditch class to be cool or hang out, especially in medical school. I would think we are all above that at this point in our lives. I do understand that people have different learning styles and I respect that. I also understand that there may be some times when opting out of class could be beneficial if there were other pressing needs. I am sure we are all just as overwhelmed with the $40K pricetag per year of education, and I was just taken aback that someone would consider not going to the classes - but then again, I have always attended lectures unless I was sick or had another more urgent matter to tend too. But, to each his own. This is medical school and you have to do whatever is best for you to learn the material and be able to apply it in the future.🙂

FWIW, I would most certainly attempt to attend every class. If I'm going to throw down that much borrowed money, I'm going to make the most out of every available resource. :meanie: 😉 🙂

I would hope you would want to attend lectures otherwise you're paying 40k to look at notes.

👍 I completely agree. My main goal is to get the best grades possible. Wheter that is attending 100% of the lectures or only 50%, that doesn't really matter to me. To each his own.

Hi guys,

I just found this site a couple weeks ago and i've been following along with you guys since. I'll be joining you in Aug at KCUMB.

I was thinking about the lectures also and how difficult it would be to miss a couple. Not because I want to but because my wife is due in October and I dont think I will have any choice.

Sounds like a couple of you are from KC but if you have questions about the area I can help answer those. My wife went to KU and is from Kansas so we know KC very well too.

There are many medical students that do this and end up doing very successful on their boards and in their residency placement. The medical school wants you to succeed. You (we) just need to figure that out. One could also say that we are spending $40k/yr to just listen to someone talk about the human body. Ultimately your lectures, notes, study groups..etc. do nothing for you unless you LEARN the material. Going to lecture doesn't equate to learning something (unless you have photographic memory, sadly I don't have that luxury). To learn something you actually have to spend time, review it and put it into your long term memory. If this wasn't true you wouldn't be hearing about med-students studying 4-6 hours a day. The important thing is to really learn and know your material. I could give two sh#ts how someone did that.

Congrats!!! 👍

I actually think you will be fine. KCUMB is great in that they record the lectures and post them for students to listen to. I have been to several lectures at two different medical school and basically the lecturer follows their power point slides/notes verbatim. Of course you will have lecturers who don't do this, and from my experience those tend to be the better teachers. At least for myself, I would be more worried about missing anatomy labs and OMM labs since those are very vital to our education and not something that can be easily made up outside of actually being in lab. For the lectures you will have your own audio copy of the lecture, the lecture notes/power point slides as well as the note-taking service if that is something that you decide to use. You also have your text books, BRS books, First Aid and the internet. If you need more clarification you could always go and ask a friend or a proff for an explanation. Med school lectures aren't like high school where you raise your hand everytime you don't understand something and ask the teacher to simplify something or explain it different. We don't have that luxury in medical school as there is a lot of material that needs to be covered in each lecture which the proff is responsible for.

I agree with you and know people who have been successful without attending lectures as well. I am hoping though, as a person who does attend lectures, that I will get something out of going to them. Of course going to lectures doesn't equate to learning but I would hope most medical students would want to use every resource available to them when learning medicine. Sadly, I know this is not the case.

I found this on youtube, i was amazed at the animations. If anyone is interested in joining the club during the 2007-2008 check out the video. Dr. Friedlander is awesome by the way, you'll def know ur path inside and out.

So, I can't wait to get started, it's getting so close, and I'm getting to the point where I'd really like to start packing right now! Just, figured I'd throw that out there, also, is anyone planning on having boyfriends, girlfriends, ect, coming and living with them. My boyfriend is gonna be living with me, he reads this, and I just wanted to see if there would be anyone for him to hang out with while I'm studying my life away!

Alicia,
My boyfriend will be moving with me as well. I am sure he would really enjoy having someone else to hang out with that can relate. Where are y'all moving from? I am moving from Texas and he is currently in Indianapolis, IN. We will look forward to meeting you both. 🙂
