KCUMB Class of 2018

That question has no real answer. Every week is different. Honestly.

I went back to our August schedule and every Friday was a different time....especially depending on what lab group you're in.
Okay, so if I am trying to book my plane tickets, what time would you say is safe to leave at ?

Ummmm.... I really can't answer that.... They tell us our days can go til 5... But 3 out of the 4 weeks last August we were all done with the day by 3pm.
And they constantly make changes to the schedule....and how things are done so your Fridays could be completely different from ours.
Sorry, I am not super helpful. You can book tickets and if there is a conflict you can try and ask curriculum for an excused absence or see if you can get a different time, go to another lab group's time....if its a required thing (like a competency checkoff or a lab).

No worries. Thanks for the help.

You really really have to consider that it may be the weekend before a test, in which case you'll be spending 20-30 hrs over 2 days studying. Unfortunately, I didn't realize until getting here how intense the first 3 months are. Don't let anything cause you to have to remediate a course (first 2 sections had many remediations)......i understand it's your brothers wedding, but unfortunately you're going to be missing a lot of memorable events the next 7-10 years, it's one of the worst part of the sacrifice

Sorry, don't mean to be a downer lol

Yeah....I made the decision to go home for a wedding the weekend before MSK anatomy practical. Bad choice.
I did end up passing the practical (no remediation, yay) but it wasn't pretty. After that I figured out there is no going home. Lol. And I only have a 3 hour drive to go home.

It's going to depend on if you have a lab or not. Unless class is "required", you don't have to go. I haven't been to a non-required lecture the entire second semester.

Everyone is different in school and people have different expectations for grades and things like that. I would not skip your brothers wedding. You will just have to work extra hard to stay caught up and work your butt off during the week. Most of the time, I don't do much studying until the weekend before exams and I'm a straight B student. I'm fine with that. With the amount of work I do, I'm completely fine being average. Some people study every day and then put in 10/12 hours a day during the weekends. You will find what works best for you.

That being said, I would highly encourage you to be in town the weekend before an exam. Exams are usually on mondays, and unless you are a study robot monster that studies every day for multiple hours and stays completely caught up, you will be cramming your ass off the weekend before an exam. I study from about 8am-11pm (or later) friday-sunday the weekend before an exam.

I can't miss my brothers wedding. Which is 3rd week in from start date. I'm thinking about skipping my friends wedding second week in if I have to. You guys are making me nervous haha
Before you make any big decisions I would wait until the exam schedule comes out. If your friend is getting married the weekend before an exam/practical, theres a slim chance you will be able to go. It sucks, but that's how it works. If he is getting married on a weekend that fits with your exam schedule then you should definitely go. I was pretty lucky with how some of my exams fell and was able to do fun things. When MSK starts, you are going to need your weekends to go to the anatomy lab and get tutored. Rule of thumb: weekend before an exam means you will do nothing at all other than study. If your brothers wedding falls the weekend before an exam, I would definitely make an exception. Despite what you may think, med school isn't life. Family is important. You will still pass, but don't get used to taking weekends off before tests.

You do need to accept the fact that you will likely miss out on many things and you will need to make sacrifices. There is more than enough time to have hobbies/go out/ watch netflix/ do whatever you want but your "fun time" will depend completely on your exam schedule. Don't be nervous. Med school isn't that hard. It's all about time management and sifting through all the bull shi* Good luck and enjoy your summer!

It's all about prioritizing. If you have to leave for a weekend, bust your ass leading up to it. I typically get burned out by Friday when we have most exams on Mondays and have been fine. You just need to realize that you need to compensate for the days you're missing. Life is more important than taking a B- instead of a B. Pre-clinical grades are pretty low on the totem pole when it comes to residency. Unless you are gunning from day 1, then just give up on life now.

You're gonna be surrounded by people who can't imagine getting less than an A. It may just be me, but this is no way to live your life.

Tl:dr In 10 years are you gonna be more upset missing a good friends wedding or getting a grade lower than you may have otherwise?

The bolded x100

Also, for all you 'snow virgins', if you're bringing a car the try and make sure it is either front- or 4-wheel drive. If you've never driven in snow/ice before then using a rear wheel drive car will be an absolute nightmare.

Teach me your ways. Friday is typically the day I use to catch up on the lectures I didn't go to/watch. God, maybe I should start going to class. I'm cramming all the way until about midnight on sunday night.

Key to medical school, lower your expectations. When I hit submit, I'm just looking for a score that starts with 7. Anything above that is a bonus. Been riding the B-/B train all year long baby. Thank you jesus for curved tests.

7 is all I care about, too. As long as I feel comfortable with the material, and the questions I'm missing are minutiae, I'm ok with my life. This is not coming from an A student obviously, haha.

Amen to that.

Also, regarding the MSK practical - I never went in for tutoring that whole section, didn't spend a single hour in lab outside of what was required. Did fine on the practical. I don't recommend this strategy - but its possible. I'd be more worried about the written tests than the practical...

...Is a ford fiesta FWD? D:

Considering I was told Dr. Putthoff was writing the quiz and didn't find out it was Dr. Friedlander until around 9 pm last night, I certainly did not...

I did not expect the quiz to be the way it was....now time to memorize everything from lecture.

Gotta laugh at the amount of material in chapter 6 and the fact that its immuno. Is anyone else as lost as I am right now?

Its only a 5 point quiz. More concerning to me is the general way in which material is being taught. Today, we get a case where the dx is histo, which looked veeeeery much like tuberculosis. A PERFECT opportunity for a quick lesson on DD between the two. Nope.

This.

So who knew to just memorize the case studies to do good on the quiz lol
not me 🙁. I keep trying to tell myself it's only 5 pts, but it's still disheartening studying so much of Robbins/Pathoma/Goljan and not doing well because I didn't just memorize the cases which would have taken me maybe an hour :bang:

And now one has to wonder if the exam will be the same?? Or if Robbins is still relevant.....ugh.

I am just loving the fb thread about class right now....lol.
I can't understand the logic to not posting lectures that are required attendance and that 99%+ of the class showed up to. At least give us an outline of the cases or something so we can go back over and review the concepts we applied. Ridiculous.

Yep. I completely agree. I quit taking notes yesterday because I thought "ugh I can't type that fast. I'll just re-watch it later to get the info"
I can't understand the logic of basically everything they've done to our curriculum. The system worked....why fix something that isn't even broken?!

I actually think that focusing on physio first year and focusing on path second year is more advantageous due to repetition vs the old system. My problem is with policies like not posting helpful information. The way I see it, not posting something hurts the students in the learning process. The school should be doing things that aid us in learning the material to the highest level. You know what happens when material is not going to be posted? Most of the class will sit there trying to type everything instead of paying attention to the cases. At the very least, we should get an outline of the cases so we can figure out what we didn't understand the first time around.

As someone said on fb, one thing that can get us change in this policy is express ourselves, flood OpenDoor with comments that are respectful and well worded arguments like this one. I hear the idea was given by some faculty. The key being being respectful and make a case. I sent a comment yesterday in which I was basically arguing that while the session was very informative, next session I won't be able to actually participate as Puthoff said he wanted us to, because I will be too busy typing notes so that I can reread them later and try to make connections, which essentially defeats the purpose of the CIS. Every CIS was at least recorded in the past, after the lectures were released, and at times even the Powe points; our class have shown that we are doing great with that system in place. Please mates, let's express ourselves were it matters rather than just here and fb, where those who can make a change won't read it.

It's a bit weird but I had more freedom at my undergrad institution. I feel like they think we're children at times "You have to attend lecture and learn this way because we know what's best for you guys". I can't remember a lecture in UG where they had required attendance.

They lost future alumni donations from me a long time ago.

I think Robbins might be unnecessary...for now. Doesn't seem like Friedlander is going to pull from these. I think Goljan might be a good source for this class right now, because of the physio and path. Anyone who got a 4/5 or 5/5 have any input? Was it pretty much from the cases?

Also I think we should also all post to opendoor or whatever it's called.

So if I put Rocky Mountain spotted fever for every answer for the quiz on Friday I should be able to get at least 1 out of 5 correct...right?

Meningococcemia......???

I remember something about brain abscess

And foreign body in the lung.

Histoplasmosis also was one.

Uh.....that's all I got.

So it looks like going forward (Putthoff), we will never have any CIS slides/lectures posted for review.
