KCUMB Class of 2018

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
You're finally seeing the theme here 😉

And yeah, I can definitely seeing this being one of, if not the lowest, averages of the year. And I'm ok with that. Give me my 70 and the start of summer.

According to the professor we did "very well" on the MOD final and as a class! With that low of an avg, I was surprised when he said that. But then proceeded to say that 75 people got A on the final and 60 got A for the block. Out of 270+ students I didn't think 60 As qualify as " the majority did very well"!
So we are well on our way to do very well as a class for this block, regardless of the average. One more week people!1 more week, we can do it. By the time we come back will be refreshed and will start year 2 with an understanding of the expectations, so that's a big plus!

Sooo what're everyone's thoughts after that little pep talk today?

Is 2nd year going to be filled with rainbows and sunshine?

Or at least that's what I'm telling myself right now...

Second year is typically the hardest and least favorite year of med school. Studying for boards sucks. There's no way around it.

That being said... I'm looking forward to learning more clinically relevant material and having less time in lecture. Can't beat free time.

Edit: Also, totally forgot we are done with anatomy lab. Heard rumors there are changes with our OMM competencies and that they might be run similar to PCM.....? Things are looking up

Honestly reading robbins isn't so bad when you supplement with books like the Pocket Companion/BRS path/RR path esp if you have trouble figuring out whats clinically relevant. I skimmed Big robbins mostly just to fill in details. My focus on this last exam was mostly the pocket companion and the board books (a lot less dense) and it worked out very well.

That's not the point. I hate watching media site and reading poorly put together powerpoints. In your words, that's "dumb" to me.

But you're welcome to your opinion.

This is true. The book is a standardized method to get information to the students.

I have seen microbiology ppts from the previous professors. I have no clue how students learned microbiology from those lecture. They looked very basic and barebones.

After seeing those I realized learning from the book was probably a better option for this block.

I'll take Robbins on my couch over lecture any day.

Definitely for this block, Clinical Micro is pretty solid, even if it is very simplistic. Robbins would still be a different story though. I know a few people who didn't have Clinical Micro until this week who used Robbins instead. None of them got higher than a 2 on the first quiz, and I thought it was pretty easy. I should also say none of them go to lecture either, and at least 3 of those questions he gave the answer to at some point.

Grades at this point are a crapshoot. Either you happen to study the stuff presented or you don't. The questions are a bit more subjective so going to class is very important.

I know people who worked much harder than me but got a worse grade in Pathology and on the micro quiz.

With Micro if I pass I'm going to count my blessings and move on.

Anyone else notice there Internet being throttled laltely? I can't seem to watch anything on HD and can barely stream music without it cutting out.

Nope. I'm running on all cylinders.

Weird, maybe they throttled me due to my community watching. But it's still doing it with a vpn.
Edit: appears it's just in the AC.

maybe flush your DNS? I do it periodically and it keeps my chrome running smoothly

Is reading Chapter 8 worth it?

Also, Chs 34/35 of CMMRS? Do y'all remember if he said anything about reading those chapters? Think he'll ask any Qs from them? The DSA calendar says Part 6, so it would stand to reason that we're responsible for them - but 34 is basically pharm and 35 is ... different...

I'll probably glance at the figures in chapter 34 and 35. I'll look at the figures in robbins that he listed in his power point but other than that, I'm going to focus all my energy on CMMRS and getting a 70%.

Kind of funny that SDN got a shout out the other day during class. I haven't read anything on here that really seemed that offensive, but be careful what you say. Administration has some NSA spy stuff going on : )

Fear mongering for the sake of fear mongering.

can anyone verify that the exam is 2/3 bacteria? I heard that from a few people today. It kind of makes sense, but I thought it was more like 2/3 bacteria and viruses.

I can't believe how fast this year has flown by.

Congrats finishing MS1 everyone! Cant wait to join y'all in a month! With that, I have two questions for you Kansas Cityins.

1. Where is a good place to buy nice/cheap furniture? I am looking for an L desk for my office and a nice couch. We are living in Overland Park, so somewhere close and preferably somewhere that delivers would be ideal.

2. I have asked this before, but I need to fly back to San Diego during the weekends of August 15 and August 22 (yes, back to back weeks) for my brother's and my good friend's weddings (both of which I am in, and best man in my brother's). I am trying to schedule my flights for Friday afternoon, but I have no idea what time classes usually end on Fridays. What time would you consider a "safe" time to schedule my flight?

Thanks again!

Did anyone hear crying in the hallway during the test?

I didn't, but someone I talked to after the test said he saw a person that looked really scared and was frantically texting afterwards. I feel bad for people that screwed up this section, both because the average ended up higher than most people I talked to expected and because it's summer :/

1. Nebraska Furniture Mart, FTW. It's in KCK, absolutely massive, and they have a decent sized clearance section that's got some nice stuff. We just bought a new serta, king-size bed with box-springs and had it delivered for around $750. We also bought a really nice dresser there for around 400 after delivery. Definitely recommend checking the clearance section and going every few days, as stuff flies out of there and rotates very quickly.

2. 7 pm or later if you go straight to the airport from campus and want to be 100% safe.

Awesome. What is KCK?

On the schedule it says class goes till 3:00pm after the MCM midterm on the 14th and then till 1 because of science Friday on the 21st. Should I still wait till 7?

Umm. Where do you see this schedule?? I saw the calendar but I would love to see an exam schedule...

If you're going to book tickets now then yes, keep in mind the schedule is VERY prone to change. Chances are you'll be able to leave earlier than that, but if you get tickets for an earlier time and they change the schedule you'll miss things. If the MCM midterm is on a Friday though you can probably just leave afterward. I think all of my class checked out mentally after during those lectures and had to re-watch them anyway.

MCM= man crush Monday?

I'm feeling a little lost, like I should be studying. Also heard we lost a few more classmates which sucks. Then again you know how rumors go.

Yeah, I heard that... Class size on PowerCampus is smaller now too... 🙁
