KCUMB Class of 2018

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I was under the impression he/she had to stay away from social media bcse he/she was seriously struggling during MOD or sth around the end of the year.
But yeah, it's telling that we keep loosing people and our averages are essentially what they were 1st semester! Either we are burned out or we can't get a handle of whatever new system this is, or a combination of both.
I know some people are thriving with this new style but it looks like as a whole the class is not doing to hot right now!

He/She is still in our class. I said hi to them the other day in lab.

So.. after seeing the average, I've come to the conclusion that I've been doing something seriously wrong for these past 3 exams. I've been scoring 10-15% and consistently below average since renal began. Any help here? I've been doing Pathoma... just started looking at FA for cardiovascular. Haven't been reading as Robbins as deeply as I did for neuro.. maybe that's the cause. I honestly dont know what's been happpening, I went from an above average to a below average student. Any advice would be useful!
Can you explain in detail what you've been doing? Whats changed from neuro till now? How did you do in neuro for the pathology half? (roughly for anonymity).

I read Big Robbins and up until this last test path was the only section I was doing above average on. I tried baby robbins for this test and it didn't go so well. Idk how people can use only that...
Baby robbins is definitely not enough. I usually do my notes with only baby robbins at first and find myself filling in a lot of important details when I do a pass of big robbins. For me, watching pathoma and using baby robbins at first just helps me get through big robbins faster when I do finally end up going through it. I also will end up looking stuff up on wiki, FA or RR pathology if I need to clear something up esp after missing a practice question. Been working pretty well. I think the key is to do ALOT of questions to figure out deficiencies.

I religiously do the LOs for the path. I really really read baby Robbins and then find the filler answers in big Robbins.
I then read my notes and highlight/circle/underline the key words/phrases in FA and rapid review. My path scores have been above average. I do practices questions!! I do them after my first pass through notes.
Then I study and the night before the exam I redo the questions (because I can't remember practice questions after a week).

This seems to work for the path portions. Pharm and physio I have no clue what I need to do different.

I actually do pretty well on the path side of things - I do alright on pharm (not great, but enough to get by) - definitely can't say the same about physio, I get rocked on it pretty much every test. But as far as studying for path I do pathoma right at the start of each section, use the lectures to annotate big Robbins, and then do First Aid & pathoma again at the end. I also do the Kaplan Qbank for path in the weekend before the exam. I'm contemplating throwing in a brief run-through of Goljan at the end for the next section (I have it, I've just never really used it). Its worked pretty well for me so far.

I'm with ya on not knowing how people can get by with just baby Robbins - there is an awful lot that they're not getting if thats all they use... I talked to someone before this exam that ONLY used pathoma... Can't imagine what made them think that was a good idea. Didn't talk to them after the test, but I can't imagine it went well. Pathoma is great - but there is a BUNCH of stuff that isn't in there.

And people give Big Robbins a lot of crap - but I really don't think its that bad. I mean yeah, its dense, its not fun to go through - but if you just pace yourself throughout the section I actually think its pretty manageable. MOD was pretty miserable because they gave us like a third of the book to read, but most of the sections now are only around 100 pages, which is doable over 2 weeks IMHO.

BRS all day long for physio. All I did for this section was watch his lecture twice, read BRS (15 pages total) and did the 60 practice questions. I'm pretty sure I got around a 90% on the physio portion of the test. I should add that cardio was one of my best sections last year, and I only missed a few of the BRS questions first pass, so that might skew things, but it's what I'll be doing from here on out.

So, I guess the attendance was very low for all of today's classes? Were there talk of not releasing lectures or should we harass IT? Someone here went to class today? As of now only Koronev lecture is posted!

Don't even care anymore..just feel bad for those who rely on them.

Yeah I saw the announcement about Johnston's lecture - which is a bummer, but no big deal... But Kruse's CIS? Are we assuming he chose not to post his? 'Cuz that sucks, if so...

He was pretty mad about the attendance at the previous CIS and almost didn't post. I'm guessing this time he finally decided not to post.

Did anyone go to the OMM review tonight? Can you explain the new competency format? Seems basically the same as last year, just a bigger pain and more often. I didn't think i could possibly hate OMM any more. I've been proved wrong.

OMM competencies every monday until the end of semester (including exam days). This is my nightmare. I should have known better to post about how much better second year was and how I was actually experiencing happiness. It's a cruel world out there.

That sounds horrible. Get everyone to spam the "open door" thing? Maybe you can kill it before it learns to crawl.

Yeah most of our exams are on Mondays, and we will have competencies only on Mondays. I guess there was no other day in the week we could have done that! Fun!

Makes no sense to me why we did all the labs in a row and now have to do competencies from something we did months ago, especially during block exams. Why not do labs on exam Monday's and competencies on non-exam Mondays? Seems like a splendid idea to me.

But too late for us Guinea pigs.

I've stopped checking media site. Either the recording isn't posted, doesn't work, or now professors are choosing not to post them. It's more of a headache than it's worth.

The lectures/CIS from Wednesday didn't get recorded because of 'technical issues' or so I was told. Not sure why Dr. Johnston's CIS from today isn't up, but that's unfortunate :/ Hopefully this doesn't become a trend for the rest of cardio.

These "technical issues" seem to happen all too often

Open door is best we can do. Or complain here too since we know they read all of this...

I'd very much appreciate you guys fighting this tbh. OMM competencies even for us are stressful, the idea of having to do them every week and also on test days is pretty nightmarish since half these competencies take at least 3-4 hours of practice before you can really deal with some of the more difficult and picky fellows.

Do not understand the logic of having OMM competencies on the day of the final exam. Im surprised there isn't more of an uproar about this...we should not have to even think about OMM the weekend before a final especially as big as this one. Class average is already in the 70s...

Open door. If enough people say something hopefully they'll change it in the future. I'm not even looking at competencies until after the exam.

Same, I'd like to say that I'll be prepared enough to take an hour or two to review competencies this weekend, but that hasn't worked out well in the past...

So....3.5 days to assimilate everything there is to know about clinical cardio. And......GO!

Sigh.

Hello all,

Im not sure if im posting in the right place but I wanted to ask a few questions regarding life as a student at KCUMB. Ill be attending KCUMB next year in the Fall for my first year.

First, to those living or have lived in the century tower, do you enjoy it there? How is the level of quietness and the staff working there? And how are the rooms/general condition of the entire complex. I plan on gettin the 2 bed 2 bath room and share it with a roommate.

Also, is there anything that I should study to start preparing for med school? Im currently in my gap year and have alot of free time. I was looking at some anatomy books to study a bit in advance since im rusty. What books would you recommend I look into? Thanks for your help.

Are you ready for the best possible advice as to what to do with your gap year? Here it is: Do NOT do ANYTHING even remotely related to medicine or med school.

Enjoy your gap year and save the work for next year.

If you have free time then you currently have a commodity that is worth more than anything in the world. You won't have as much free time as you do right now for the next decade or so. Go talk to the first years and they will probably tell you they wish they had spent their free time doing fun things.

The sweet spot in life is after an acceptance and before matriculation. Enjoy it wisely.

Agree with what was said above. Number one priority should be to enjoy your last year of 'freedom' before you dive into med school.

If you're really that bored/have NOTHING to do, you might consider taking a semester or online biochem or immuno course if you've never taken them before. Nothing to intense, just something structured that will give you a decent foundation since those are the first two classes and it can make the transition (slightly) easier. Do NOT try to self-study or read a text book. The amount of information you'll retain will be pretty worthless compared to what you'll actually need to know, and anatomy in med school is far more advanced than any single undergrad anatomy course I've heard of, so any review will likely be a waste of time you could have spent on something more enjoyable.

On another note - this test.... Just... What? Why? I don't even know what to think about it. I actually feel cautiously confident on EKGs - which is what it seems like everyone is freaking out about, but I just don't even know what to expect on pharm. I feel like I'm gonna get annihilated on Konorev's questions.

I currently live in Century Towers. It's not bad if you lower your standards for the 2 years you'll be living here. It's probably the cheapest rent you can find in the KC area. I currently pay $445 in a 2 bed, 2 bathroom. It's quiet 90% of the time because people are studying but if you live next to someone who has ragers every now and then, then it'll be loud. Staff is nice.

I'd say the general condition of the entire complex is fair. Sometimes the elevators stop working or the CT library internet stops working... laundry room (except the 5th floor) rarely gets cleaned or at least that's what it seems like. Cockroach and fruit fly infestation... but I think that's gotten better. The first floor loading dock where we dump our trash is a little shady. The only things I like about living here is the close proximity to school and it's easier to Uber with people when you're going out. All in all, I can't say I "enjoy" it here but it'll do for now. I'll live somewhere nicer when I'm an actual doctor in a few years 🙂
