KCUMB Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just got my letter! Will more than likely end up here. I thought the facilities were mediocre at best but I love the curriculum and the city. Either way, it's a means to an end. Hopefully my classmates wont be total douche bags like the people I interviewed with!!!

My first impression is you are a troll. You engage in a personal attack on all of the faculty who interview without providing a factual basis for your position.

You should determine if KCUMB is "right for you." There are other schools which will offer a means to your end with much less discomfiture.

If your attitude represents your personalty, the douche bag will be identifiable by all.

Thirded.

True, I'm not interested in FP so what I've been reading about the additional knowledge of running your own practice doesn't matter to me but if I was a partner in an EM group or something I'm sure it would help there.

It's not only for FP, you can open your own practice in surgical, gas, urology, ortho, etc.. 😉

congrats on all the acceptances!!

Thanks, man! I'm so pumped. This place is by far my favorite school. I'm sure you will! We're already getting quite the posse together for KCUMB C/O 2015. 😉

i really liked NSU so hope i get your spot there 😀 but im curious about KCUMB. can i ask you to compare the two and what ultimately made you lean towards KCUMB?? congrats tho!

I'm curious as well... but look on the bright side traitorman, out of a class of about 250 you can easily avoid someone with this attitude.

I got this questions a couple of times so I'll post it up here so everyone can benefit from it. As far as the Ethical Question goes, DO NOT STRESS OVER IT. In my group some got asked an ethical question and some didn't so its pretty much who you get paired with. From those who got the question most if not all of them got the "Give me an ethical situation you might face as a doctor" so you had a choice to pick your own ethical question which is easy. So have a couple ready and do better than stem cell and abortion. They are just trying to see how you respond under pressure and whether or not you can stick to your point and defend it. Over all the interview was very relaxed and conversation like.

So, there were a number of factors that went into my decision on KCUMB over Nova, but to sum it up quickly (you can PM me if you want more details).

Overall, they were my favorite two places. If I didn't get into KCUMB I would have gone to Nova.

The one thing about Nova that I could never get past though is the way they stack your first year with so much additional work (medical Spanish, etc.). I don't think they are bad courses, but I didn't like how they were all just kind of tossed on to the curriculum. Being a more systems based guy at heart, KCUMB's curriculum just made more sense to me. Nova's second year curriculum is basically systems based, but you have to get through the first year of a traditional, very heavy and front loaded, curriculum (I don't buy into the philosophy that more is always better).

The second thing for me was location. I really couldn't see myself in Davie, FL, where I could see myself in KC, MO. It's a preference thing. I just don't like all the heat/humidity year round. I mean it's still 85 there!!! I like seasons. I enjoy having a variety when it comes to weather, not just heat, humidity, and rain. Now if I was interested in Geriatrics, I would have chosen FL hands down, but I'm not... The cost of living in FL is also 2-3x higher than it is in KC, MO. I figure that for every dollar I borrow I'm going to have to pay back $1.50, I don't think the additional rent is worth it in the long run, especially since I'm not really a huge fan of the area.

As far as clinical rotations go, they both seem good. I compiled a list of the rotations from both and like some and don't like others, but that's the nature of the beast. I won't select sites I don't like for the lottery (and there is a lottery at both places, although 96% of KCUMB students get their #1 choice). I did, however, like that Nova places you at one site for your entire third year, but this also has a downside, if you don't like where you end up getting as far as a site, you're S.O.L.. Now, Nova does do something that is pretty cool, they allow you to visit the sites prior to ranking them and they even organize dinners to allow you to meet with people who were in those programs before you, which gives you a great opportunity to check them out and get the low-down on them before hand. I'm not sure if KCUMB has this option, but it is unlikely because they didn't mention it, or they didn't think it was a big selling point, so they didn't mention it. Either way, I'll know in about a year and half... haha.

Ok, and finally... I'm still looking for the "official" KCUMB 2010 match data, but I do have Nova's, and while it looks very good it is very loaded with residencies in FL and areas I have no real desire to practice in. Whereas the KCUMB "unofficial" match list has students matching all over the place into a variety of specialties I'm more interested in. Also, KCUMB has a very low primary care match percent, which is good for me since I'm not interested in primary care. It's not to say they don't support primary care, because they do (you can even do an optional 4th year curriculum that gives you 3 months of primary care, this is not an option at Nova - it is required), but for me I am interested in other fields including surgical subspecialties which KCUMB has a strong history of matching into.

In terms of administration, I feel like any school that has a call center handle the majority of their application calls might be a little too big for me. I really enjoyed my interactions with Tracey and the other KCUMB administrators and they seemed to be on top of everything, which gives you a little insight into how they operate on a day-to-day basis. I liked the administration at Nova during my visit, but once again, it was a big school feel which doesn't suit me quite as well.

I must say though, the students at both places were great. I really enjoyed interacting with both groups of students. Even the ones we met that weren't involved in the tours were great, at both places. So, I don't think you can go wrong student wise at either of them (although, I'm sure this is the case at most schools, but it just seemed to stand out to me at these two places...). But Nova is a much larger campus with close to 200 different programs, so if a larger campus is your thing, then Nova would win that one. But I also felt that KCUMB was designed primarily as a medical campus and that is exactly what it feels like. It's the perfect size for me. Not too big and not too small.

All in all, they were both great places and it was a tough decision, but I just feel that KCUMB will be a better fit for me.

If you have your heart set on Nova, I hope you get my spot as well. 😉 Good luck, man.

Thanks for the info man! Appreciate it!

@ mightymoose: thanks man for the insight! unfortunately, I was already rejected pre-interview from KCUMB but I just had to know how impressive the school is. I guess it really does depend on personal preference. congrats again on the acceptance, and I hope I do get your spot! haha

I'm gonna call them up at 8am to see if they have any good/bad news for me! :xf:

I am very excited to attend here! Sounds like there are a lot of great opportunities at KCUMB. Although I hear first year of the genesis curriculum is pretty tough! cant wait!

For those who interviewed Nov 3rd/5th, when did they say the committee would meet/have a decision?

So I interviewed today (yes, I'm that kid that instantly is back on their computer) and they said the adcom meets on Friday. By Monday or Tuesday of next week we should be able to call. Not sure if the the adcom met for the Nov. 3rd/5th or if they are on Friday too.

Accepted! and yes I'm having a beer at 8am to celebrate!

Hmm.. I was told we would know by the 19th. But then again that's a Sunday and I kind of doubt they're there on the weekend. Either way, it's coming up soon!!!

When we were going back to the hotel with Tracey, she told us we can call her or e-mail her next Tuesday if we want to find out.

Interviewed Nov 3rd. Called today and ACCEPTED!! WOOOOWHOOO!!! Top choice! I will be going here for sure--look forward to meeting all you bad asses going to KCUMB! 🙂

Only a week??!?!? That's awesome! I'm interviewing 12/3 and if I find out around 12/10, then I might just skip my finals lol.

Accepted!!! Interview Nov. 5th. Called in today and received the great news. I loved the school and will most likely be attending KCUMB

Everyone who has interviewed so far has gotten in it seems like. This is making me too excited. Congrats doods!

I would assume those that get rejected don't really want everyone to know about it.

Hey guys!
What is the advisable length for interview question answers? Well, I know it depends on the question but for the 'why do you want to be a physician' question, what's the advisable length?
Thanks!

Honestly, as long as it takes for you to explain why you wanna be a doctor. For example mine was a good 10 minutes cuz I had to start from when I was very young and explain. So as long as you're not just mumbling on there is no real time limit.

Oh WOW! Congrats to all that got in!!!!!! I interviewed Nov. 3rd and was going to wait until the 15th to call. I guess I'll call first thing tomorrow morning! *hope it's good news*

Everyone as in everyone who posts here regularly. You guys really mind telling people where you got rejected from? I thought the anonymity of an online message board would get rid of that.

ahh! interview invite Dec. 10!!!!! I'm so excited!

I just had to check out my new signature 🙂

Quick question on the pre-medical source letter, can an academic letter from a science professor replace it if you can't get a good one from a pre-med advisor or dean?

When I called them before I submitted mine, they told me to replace it with a science professor. So, yes, it works.

Thanks. I've been holding off applying here because of that letter, but now I just sent in my 2 science letters along with D.O. letter. Are my chances really low now?

I got an interview. I think they understand that not all schools have the same options for letters. Just call and check in a week or so to make sure everything is complete.

just got home from my interview at KCOM and was catching up on my emails.... when i see an interview invitation for KCUMB! i thought it was hilarious cause i literally JUST came back from kansas city. missouri loves me!

KCUMB is pretty quick with their decisions- I submitted my secondary app like 2 weeks ago. Looking forward to Dec 10th!

Those were the letters that I sent, and I got in. My GPA is so-so, but the rest of my application was pretty good. I got the feeling that they didn't really care about details (technicalities, like where your letters came from) and more about who you were (at least what showed up in your application). I was impressed by the other people in my interview group, and the people who I have met other places who have also interviewed there. I think they have done a good job of finding pretty good applicants to interview, and from who I have met so far, accept. Don't sweat where your letters come from, as long as they are the strongest letters you think you can get.

Good luck. 🙂

I am going on Dec. 10th too!! Are you going to stay in a hotel or with a host? I was thinking of going with a host...I want to get a good feel for the school. Ahh! I'm so excited!

Just called! SUCCESS!! I'M SO EXCITED!!!!!!!!!

I think you call the general KCUMB number and then you are supposed to ask for the admissions office.

I actually had Ms. Birdsong's number but noticed she doesn't pick up her phone calls- probably out of office a lot. So I googled admissions. and called (816) 283-2352. Good luck!

Finally getting around to writing about my interview 😳

I interviewed on 11/9. The night before some other SDNers and I got dinner in the Power and Light District - didn't get much of a look around, but the Sprint Center looks really cool and the drive down there isn't bad.

I drove myself to the campus the morning of the interview. To be honest, the school isn't in the best neighborhood, but inside the campus itself is really pretty ( I got a good look at it by getting lost trying to figure out where to park). The architecture looks really nice, and unfortunately they just turned off the fountains they have in the middle of campus.

They start you off with a presentation stressing the unique curriculum and family atmosphere of the school. Then after the inevitable Financial Aid presentation, they bring out a student panel for questions, then split up the student panel to lead tours of campus.

This was my first interview, but the facilities seemed top notch. We went into the cadaver lab, where every table had an HD TV overhead. They have a "dummy" patient you can practice on with a professor behind a two-way mirror giving responses for your "patient". They also hire actors for you to practice on, and videotape the session so you can get feedback and review your performance.

They have a gym you can use to work out, but they're building a new student center which will have a bigger gym to be open in March. They're also building a new library to replace the small-ish one they have now.

After lunch you're taken to the student lounge, where they have a pool table, some ping pong, a TV, some computers and a couple of old-school arcade games. But it's not very relaxing - essentially everyone waits there for a phone to ring. The interviewers call the student lounge to call up the interviewee, one of the student ambassadors picks up the phone and has whoever is called is led by one of the current student to their interview, somewhere else on campus. Unfortunately I was in the last group. There are two interviewers per interviewee, and there is a list of three of us per each set of interviewers. The student ambassadors will prepare you for your interview - tell you what each interviewer is like and what they're likely to ask you.

The interview itself wasn't too bad for me. They apparently try to give you one interviewer who will go easier on you paired with someone who is more likely to grill you. In terms of the hard questions, I kind of got to pick it myself. The interviewer asked me "what do you think of when I talk about the current state of healthcare" and "what comes to mind when you think of an ethical issue in medicine" and then kind of made me elaborate from there. They did ask me how many other schools I applied to, and which of those I would go to if KCUMB wasn't an option. Overall don't stress about it, just be confident in yourself and your convictions.

And that ends my super-long post. I loved the school and am crossing my fingers for when I call next week!
