Keeping a busy schedule?

Balance and sacrifice. I would recommend keeping a planner and a checklist of all the things you have to get done. I find it very helpful. Understand your limits and take breaks when needed, but the majority of your time needs to be spend studying, working, etc. and less netflix, bars, etc. You don't have to fit everything into one semester. Medicine is a journey and don't take on too much that you can't handle. I typically will volunteer in the summer and work during the weekends. I do research and study during the week. Just find your niche and you'll do fine!

I agree with having a solid planner (not your phone or laptop as that may distract you..I have a short attention span lol). The planner actually reduces stress because you don't have to worry about forgetting or missing something as long as you record everything in it!

PLANNER!!

just like everyone says, i write down my HM dues, volunteer, research, doctors appointments, when i should study for what at school and which chapters of MCAT should i study...

also dont overcrowd one day... spread it out...

and dont think you need to do everything like you planned... i had 3 exams over 3 weeks, but then somehow they all were rescheduled for the same week, 2 on wed and 1 on thursday... i skipped my volunteering that day and cut shot my MCAT, so i could study for those exams...

and have it with you at all times, so you can put things in as they come out...

good luck...

Of course, I understand not to overwhelm my schedule. But sometimes I cancel things just because I wasted my time or dragged doing other things. Looks like I should buy a planner! 🙂

How do you guys cap your studying? Whereas I only volunteer 4 hours a day or only shadow for an hour, I could do Physiscs problems all day if I wanted to.

Do what you need to do to get the results you want. How long do you need to do physics problems to get the A? Any more than that is pointless. It really is that simple; the hard part is knowing when you have done enough, and that depends on you.

also when for example you see a two problems in your HW that are the same, just the number changed, dont do it. You solved one, so yoou will solve the second one... i know it saves time... my physics questions were sometimes 20 minutes long... and if you cut 3 of them out. that gives you an hour to study for chem or whatever you need to study for

also if you are a commuter (i live in NYC) it takes me 35 min in subway to get to my school - thats 35 min where i do my reading, or fun stuff (such as national geographic, or scientific american reading) so they dont distract me when i have to focus on school..

Ah I see. I need to use my time more wisely. 🙂

I realized very quickly in my college career that I am the ultimate procrastinator. To try and get around that issue, I scheduled out each day the night before, including food breaks and 'goof off' time. By planning out each thing I needed to do to the quarter-hour (my classes ended at :15), I was forced to maximize my studying efficiency in order to get everything done before the next scheduled thing. I learned very quickly how my time was being wasted (i.e. the internet, roommates showing me kittens in mittens youtube videos, accompanying my friend to the student union to 'get a snack real quick', etc) when 3:30 rolled around for track practice or an internship, writing my lit paper was scheduled for 7-10pm, and I had only gotten through half the bio chapters. I would try it out and see how it works for you. Some people probably hate being 'restricted' but I found the structure relieved a lot of my stress when all I had to do was look at what was next on my to-do list and focus solely on getting that done.

That being said, take a deeeeeep breath and relax. Your thread posts are starting to stress me out, so I can't imagine how stressed you are right now! It's okay to feel like you don't know what you're doing, or that things are overwhelming. I've been there, multiple times. I'm sure others here have as well. When you recognize that you are feeling that way, learn how to take a step back and regain your mental balance. Maybe do some meditation, or yoga, or other activity you enjoy that you can come back from feeling refreshed and ready to focus on school. You can do this! You will get through college. You will do what you need to do in order to have a competitive application. It will happen, just focus on getting there one step at a time 🙂
