No they say on website you have to first be accepted to the graduate program you are applying to.
Sorry, for clarification: KH finalist, not acceptance. I know of one person who had their interview during KH immersions weekend, so they were a KH finalist before having Stanford acceptance

There seem to be three distinct categories of Scholars:

1) Walter level OMGWTF saved a villiage, CEO, all the awards, blah
2) Lots of sports or research combined with global humanitarian stuff and maybe an award or two
3) a good amount of unique things from diverse background, impressive but overall achievable

It seems to be an even split between these three categories. I am aiming for halfway between category three and category two lol Well rounded with uniqueness, but some moderate awards and research success.
Which of 2019 or 2018 cohors fits criteria 3?

I counted around 18 individuals based on my own evaluations. Pointing out individuals that meet my criteria, but you and others may have different criteria for self evaluation in comparison.

are you looking at all the cohorts? I see for medicine, 9 got this year and 6 last year.

Somewhere above "Walter level" got me to LOL.
Walter has become a metaphor.

Just a reminder to all y'all procrastinating prospective future world leaders:

The due date for the Knight-Hennessy application is coming up in a little under 3 weeks. The due date is October 10, 2019 at 1:00pm (Pacific time). This includes:
Electronic application
All letters of recommendation

These are the guidelines for the letter writers:

The video portion of the application is not due until December 11, 2019 at 1:00pm (Pacific Time).

How did you guys distribute your character count for the connect the dots and Why KH essays? Mine is looking like 800:200 but I feel like that is pretty disparate.

unsubstantial echo chamber reaffirmation is all I need
I think that is what we are at this point. There are what...300 or so MD KH applicants, maybe a third even log into SDN, maybe a tenth of those are neurotic enough to actually stay on long enough to know this thread exists? Echo chamber ASSEMBLE

300 is way less than i would expect.

Also, do we know if the KH committee looks at the Stanford secondary? I.e. would reusing portions of essays be a no-no?

The website says you can reuse. My “why KH” is basically my why Stanford plus some KH specifics. The KH will see everything from your primaries and your secondaries with particular emphasis on the LORs.

I just figured 300 based on how long the app is and how few people genuinely feel competitive for it. What would you think? There are 7 schools at Stanford, IDK how many applicants the other 7 schools get though.

Honestly, it just seems like such an insane opportunity that I feel like more people would be all over it. Plus, it's free if youre already applying to Stanford so I figured more people would be starry-eyed and hopeful, despite knowing the slim chances.

I agree though, once in a thousand lifetimes opportunity.

What We Do
A lot happens behind the scenes between now and when we notify up to 140 finalists for the 2020 cohort of Knight-Hennessy Scholars on January 15, 2020.

October 10, 2019-December 10, 2019: During this period, we review all applications and determine which candidates have submitted the strongest applications for the Knight-Hennessy Scholars program.

December 11, 2019-January 14, 2020: Once you apply to your graduate degree program, we share input with that program. At this point, we may receive access to your graduate program letters of reference and/or other application materials.

We will send you an email informing you that there is an update on the status of your application on January 15, 2020. There will be two possibilities when you visit your Application Status page:
  1. You have not been selected as a Knight-Hennessy Scholar. This decision is final.

    OR
  2. You are one of up to 140 finalists invited to attend Immersion Weekend, taking place at Stanford from February 7-8, 2020.
As we review applications, we are humbled by your experiences and excited about your potential. We ask for your patience as we focus on building the 2020 cohort of Knight-Hennessy Scholars.

Bruh, I got this too and I only just noticed that the video was due Dec. 11 not Oct 11. I stayed up all night last night preparing a script and rushed to submit it today.

Total Knight-Hennessy caliber applicant right here.

Bruh.... I am knee deep in school right now. Rushing for KH would’ve been the feather that broke the camel’s back...

Good description of a KH recipient from @mrwup:

“Seems like for those who get KH, the leastimpressive thing about them is that they will be attending Stanford Med (or other Stanford grad program).”

Submitted KH Video over the weekend. Hope all of you submitted already, if not the deadline is Dec 11. Wish you all the best and hope some of us will be lucky enough to get an invite!!

Thanks, still waiting, did you get it yet? I hear KH applicants get interviews in Jan, but I could be wrong.

I’m MSTP, but still waiting. The above MSTP poster already got an II, so i doubt the same applies for Md and MSTP regarding interview scheduling around KH. I’m hoping at this point that I am still under md consideration if rejected from mstp.

I know an MSTP applicant that has been rejected from MSTP and shuffled down to MD*. If you haven't been rejected from MSTP, I'd say that's a good sign.

*(Of course I know them, I AM them 😛 (sadly))

As a side note, I finished my video a while back before hearing back from the MSTP that they had moved me to MD, so I'm assuming the two processes are completely independent until they share materials later in the cycle (I've heard mid-late December is when they do so).

Still crossing my fingers for an MD interview (I'm one of those people who would immediately apply internally to the MD-PhD program if accepted MD).

Just got an interview invite and they auto-scheduled it for Feb 6th. Does this mean no KH or that I am a finalist?
