I'm a current M2. Feel free to ask me any questions about the school. I have been real active in past class threads as well. I wrote quite a bit about the school in last years thread. Good luck! -lilnoelle

Currently waiting on EDP letter...I'll either be accepted or have to interview a second time in Jan. The wait is killing me, I was hoping the letter would be here yesterday and it wasn't and now it's not here today either, argh. 🙂 I didn't do so well in my second interview so I sincerely believe that I will be interviewing again in January.

Just got the mail today (after the longest 4 days of waiting anxiously) and I'm in! woo~ man, am i excited or am i excited!

I'm In I'm In I Cant Believe It!!!!!!

Congratulations! Are you guys from Kansas?

Originally from MO but I've lived in Kansas long enough to gain residency...how about you Nikki? And I"m dying to know how you knew you were accepted so early, did you defer from last year??

Im in the Post Bac program. There are 10 of us, who knew this May that we would start in July 08.

Ohhh I didn't know about that. Well cool, we're going to be classmates!

(i'm kind of slow in replying, aren't i? 😛)
I'm originally from MO too, but also got residency in KS because I started working in a lab at KUMC. So what are you guys doing right now...anybody started preparing yet, or just trying to enjoy while you can?

Well, since Im in the Post-bac program, Ive been taking classes since the summer time to prepare and Im doing the Pre-Matric program in May. But Im definitely finding time to travel and hang out when I can.

So how does this Pre-Matriculation program work? Was that part of the Post-bac program?

In Pre-Matric, you take classes in the summer (stuff you will see in the first module) at the Med Center to ease the transition. Its kind of apart of it but not really. If you are in Post-bac you automatically do Pre-Matric. Everyone else has to apply to do it. This past summer there were only 20 people in Pre-Matric. Everyone I know who has done it says that its very helpful.

I'm just hanging out with friends and traveling as much as possible. I'm going to Thailand, Alaska, and Cali and maybe somewhere else if I can fit it in! I don't think I will be studying very much to be honest...I know I should but I figure I should enjoy being off while I can!

Nikki, I was wondering if you would mind telling me a little about the Post bac program, that was something you were invited to do right? What were the conditions under which you were invited, as in were they somewhat concerned about past academic performance or MCAT scores? Hope that is not too personal of a question😳 Thanks in advance.

Yeah, you have to be invited and then you apply. Im not sure why I was invited over other people who didnt get accepted. My GPA was excellent and my MCAT was average. So I assume my interview played apart in the decision.

Appreciate the Info. Congrats at getting in at KU :hardy:. I hope I get to join you!!:scared:

Hello everyone! I recently got accepted to KUMC and am very thrilled to be part of the class of 2012. I guess they should be sending out more info soon, but I had a few questions about housing -- anyone have advice on good places to think about to live, close by KUMC? Is an apartment the best idea, or renting a room in a house, etc? (I'm not TERRIBLY familiar with the KC downtown area, but hope to be, by next summer!).

Also, I'm considering applying for the Kansas Medical Student Loan program. Any ideas as to when one needs to come back to KS and work for the 4 years by (directly after residency, I'm guessing?).

Thanks, and hope everyone's Thanksgiving break is going well!

One more question -- are the tablet PCs purchased on an individual basis, and should there be more information being sent out soon in regard to what KUMC recommends? Are the textbooks something that one downloads onto the tablets then, once the student enrolls/goes through orientation?

(sorry, I probably should not be worrying half as much as I am!)

Congratulations eeesayn! My suggestions are roeland park or mission. Both are in good areas and close to the school. I think it would be best to stay in an apartment unless you know some friends who have a house close by. You dont want to be distracted.

You're not alone...I also have tons of questions. I was probably too nervous on the interview day to even think of these questions...
Anyway...I think we have to get the tablet PCs through the school. They want to install some programs onto it first, if I remember correctly.

Does anyone know the model number or name of the tablet PC? I'd like to check it out on the HP website. See what's costing me freakin $2500! :meanie:

Hey, Nikki

I was just curious when you were invited to the post-bac program at KU and how many they took. Are these type of programs looked upon favorably by the admissions commitee? I find it interesting that you have to be invited... I've never heard of that for a post-bac before.

Well, I can tell you its a HP. I see Compaq tc4200 on the tablet, but I'm not sure if thats what you need. I also don't know if your getting the same model as we did, two years ago. I'm guessing your getting a newer model.
I'm sure the computer itself didn't cost $2500. They've also got to pay for their technical support and all of the software they put on the computer. I guess they charge some surplus because we were told last year that they decided to purchase a computer tracking system for the computers with the money that was left over. We had a few people have computers stolen last year and now with the tracking system they can find any misplaced or stolen computer.

Someone else asked about KMSL. They expect you to start working in Kansas 6 months after you complete your primary care residency. They make exceptions for mission work, military work, and a few other things, but for the most part, your expected to go straight into underserved Kansas and start serving.

I'll reiterate - anyone with questions, don't be afraid to ask me. I don't check the thread very often though, so it might be better to pm me. Also, check out last years thread. I put a lot of info in it. (Although I'm now a year farther in the program and can maybe add to my answers.... )

I was invited in like April and they only took 10 people. I'm not sure if they look upon if it is favorable or not if you have been in a post bac program at another school. Well, at KU you have to be invited because it provides a guaranteed acceptance for the next year. At other schools you are just taking classes at their school but they don't give you a guaranteed spot in their Med Class.

I just heard from some friends that they are changing the tablet's next year. The old ones have been discontinued. I'm not sure what the new ones will be but when I do I'll post the information.

I just found out this past weekend that next year we will be using DELL notebooks. The details on the model have not come out yet. But I will post updates as I get them.

hello all,

I am currently a 3rd year medical student in the KC area and I have a house that will come up for rent end of July, early August. I have a history of renting to KC medical students and would like to continue that tradition.

The house is only 5 min from KU med and 5 min from the plaza. It is a HUGE 3 bedroom/ 2 1/2 bathroom with a nice privacy fenced back yard for any pets you might have. Rent is $1185/mo. Please e-mail me a kcumb.edu if you would like more info and pics of the house.

Good luck on your upcoming year,

Tiffany MSIII

For those of us still waiting for KU, any idea when word might go out? I heard that their last interview date was 2/6... can anyone verify that?

I was in on the last day of the interviews (2/6/08) and the dean did indicate that they were going try have the letters send off hopefully by St Pattys day..so am keeping my fingers crossed ...

Thanks guys... appreciate the information. It feels like this process is never-ending.

Hey everyone! I found out 2 weeks ago that I got in and I am REALLY excited about next year. Does anyone know when the packets are sent out with extra information? The letter just said in a couple weeks. Also, has anyone filled out the scholarship form yet? I just received it in an email a couple days ago.

Anyway, I'm excited to meet all of you and hope you all have a good time until next fall.

Out of curiosity i wonder how they do their deliberations on who makes it in and who doesnt. Considering they interview more than 400 applicants. Does any one have any idea?

Hello Everyone! I've always used this site to read others opinions, but have never posted anything myself. I have just been accepted to KU, so I thought I'd give a shout out to my new classmates. Congratulations to all and I'll meet you in the fall!

Congrats to everybody else getting in! i'm planning to finish the scholarship app today...fingers crossed...I need money! lol

Is anybody looking at the apartments really close (like walking distance) from KU? Does anybody know anything about that? i'm considering moving to Rainbow Ridge because I have a washer and dryer and they have hookups. I would love to be within walking distance.

Oh and to the person who asked about the "bigger" packet of info, I think it took about 3 weeks for me to get mine. Congrats again, can't wait to see you guys in July 🙂

Its based on a point system. After the interview they put your info in and you get a score. A Computer program uses an algorithm to rank you. They further discuss people who are questionable.

This is the Tablet that we might be getting. Its an HP Pavilion tx2000z.

Thanks nikki031.. i guess i will have to stop waiting for the mail-man that brings mail to my house by the door. :scared: I will just keep cool.

Hey all. 😀 I'm with all of you who are awaiting the "March Decision". It sucks to have to wait so long. I hope to be seeing you all next summer! I'll be checking back in soon.

p.s.

If I get in, KU's going to have to figure out how to put their tablet stuff on my Mac : )

Hello! Thought some of you guys who are waiting to hear (like me ) would be interested to know that Jason thinks letters will be mailed by 3/10.... *crosses fingers*

For those still waiting on packets, School starts on August 4th. Orientation is the week before so don't make any plans 🙂

What do you mean? Buying the tablet is not an option. Its required. They will not mess with your Mac.

I realize this. I was kind of making a joke/venting as I will miss my precious little MacBook : ( Boo hoo!

Sorry, I suspected you were joking.... but wasn't sure.

The funny thing is that almost all of the lecturers use Mac which causes some issues with switching their powerpoints over for the lecture.

I've never used Mac, but it seems like a LOT of people prefer them.

I finally got my acceptance letter today.. I am so delighted..My dream has come to be true!🙂

lilnoelle, I have been looking for something next to campus for convenience sake, but everything I have looked at are crap holes so I am now looking in the Mission area. Do you commute, or know anyone that does? I was wondering how hard it is to find parking. Do you have to drive around campus 2 to three times to find anything? Thanks for your advice in advance!

I know this wasnt to me, but I stay in Mission. I know at least 20 people who go to KU med and live in Mission. Ive never heard any of them complain about parking. There are alot of apartments off of Foxridge Drive. They are affordable and look nice.
