KU Med Class of 2014!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Engineer2MD, where do you ride, I love to ride equestrian as well. I haven't done it in a while though because we had to put my horse to sleep  Long story....

I have 2 horses that I keep at my place in Leavenworth. We are going to try to sell it this spring and move closer into the city, though. I will pasture board them somewhere then.

I am just getting over a nasty back injury that took me out of commission for 2.5 years. (MY long story) I'm currently shopping for a (dressage/jumping) trainer to take my mare for 30 days so this spring I can get going again. If I find someone I'll let you know.

I'm so sorry you had to put your horse to sleep. I had to put my "old man" (an Arab gelding I'd had forever) down 2 years ago. It was the hardest most awful thing I've ever had to do. I know that sounds ridiculous, I know he was "just a horse", but I can't talk about it to this day without tearing up.

Jape, on a happier note, a horse I broke is going to the World Cup this November (? I think November) in Lexington. He's an endurance horse now but I think we'll drive down and see him go. :)

/thread hijack - sorry!

Meh, I've got to keep working to pay the bills. But it's only a 9-5 M-F thing and I think July 2 will be my last day. That gives me plenty of time to do a ton of riding (equestrian) this spring and summer. And then in July I'll take a long vacation.

Although that may be a bad idea... I'm home today because we're having some repairs done and I'm hanging out with the contractors... bored to tears. Nothing even on TV. Too cold to go see my horse. Blah.

Is anybody else feeling "stuck" right now? I'm just SO BORED with life in general and July seems so far away!!!

I agree. I feel the same way, accept I am stuck on campus in classes all day. It just feels a little bit pointless, knowing that it probably won't be directly applicable and even if it is, it will be covered next year anyway. I know it isn't the greatest attitude, but this feels a little different than "burn out".

Just curious if anyone else on SDN is filling out the standard SOM scholarship application? If so, do you know the preferred length of response to each question?

Mine were roughly the same length as what I put on secondaries. (Quite a bit of similarity in the answers too.)

We have email! I feel like a real KU med student now. I was so bored at work today that I toured almost every link within my.kumc. I'm looking forward to using this so-called "tranquility room."

It's funny that you say that. I still haven't realized that this whole experience is real, so whenever I get email from KUMC, I get very excited... in a dorky kind of way!

I still haven't gotten my "secure" email yet, but I'm looking forward to it.

Hi All,
Quick question...
Does anyone know if KU has a childcare center associated with the medical school for students/faculty, etc.?

Good question. I am wondering the same thing. Anyone know?

I don't THINK that KUMC has any kind of childcare associated with it, but I'm not positive. The Lawrence campus has an EXCELLENT daycare on campus, but that doesn't really help the med center crowd.

I moved into Kansas City last year and did a little bit of research, feel free to PM me if you want my opinions. I was looking for a center, not an in home, and found a couple that I really liked. It also depends on where you are going to live. The place that I take my daughter is probably about 30 min away from KUMC, but is really close to where my wife works.

Has anyone else been getting all the som12 emails on their newly created address?

Yep! I have gotten a few send to SOM13 too.

I also have NOT received the email with the student ID information yet. (I have an email from when I worked there and the MyKUMC page has been updated though.)

Did you have the email address before applying?

Nope this is the first one for me. I haven't received any student ID information either.

I do not know about KU. However, if you have young kiddos (0 - 5) consider the Berkeley Child and Family Development Center on the campus of UMKC, which is only a 10 min drive. They are wonderful and very state-of-the-art, and from what I understand, about the highest quality in the Kansas City area. My mother is a PhD Ed Candidate at UMKC and is the cirriculum director for the child care center....

PM me if you want more details. You can also google them, they're on the web.

So I just got my MCAT scores back (29Q) and I think that's going to keep my out of some of the top 10 schools I had naively been looking at. Since I under NO circumstances want to retake the test...and I am a pretty big fan of the great state of Kansas, I am pretty sure that I'd like to try KU early decision. Anyone have EDP experience with KU? I am really liking this idea! Do I have a chance?

MCAT: P8 V10 B11 Q
cGPA: 3.60
BCPM: 3.56

profile: e-board on peer health educator club, work 30 hours/week as administrative assistant for campus police, black belt in kempo, running the boston marathon this year, going into the peace corps for two years post graduation in west africa teaching public health, kansas resident (topeka represent!), 50 hours shadowing pediatrician, labor/delivery ward hospital volunteer experience-50 hours or so, two time post-Katrina clean up work, worked in 2 different research labs at KSU in fall 2008, independent research work in histology and breast cancer this semester, attended top 5 liberal arts college for undergrad

someone please tell me I don't have to retake the MCAT to go to medical school!! haha

You should be fine. A 29, in itself, certainly won't keep you out as an in-stater. As long as you can articulate what you took away from your medical experiences well, you should be fine. The only thing that sticks out to me is the research stuff; if it were me, I would be careful how I presented that just because (I am assuming) you didn't spend significant time in either one all in the same semester. If you are going to include those labs, make sure you know what you did, why you did it, and be ready for a PhD to question you about it.

Edit: Out of curiosity, how many years have you been in school, given that you went to a different undergrad but have been at KSU since fall 2008? (ie: if you are a grad student and those two labs were part of your rotations, my comment about justifying the short time spent in them is irrelevant)

Well, I spent a semester away from Wellesley at K-State during the fall of 2008, mostly because i wanted to work in Sue Brown's evolutionary development lab. I ended up working simultaneously at the Kansas Lipidomics Research Lab in order to supplement my income that semester. I took a couple classes at KSU also to get the general co-educational experience and lived in an apartment, etc. It was basically a study abroad semester spent in kansas instead of abroad. I went back to wellesley in the spring of 2009 and will finish up here this spring 2010. So I've done the typical 4 year undergrad stint and spent a semester at KSU. I worked about 15 hours/week in each lab for 20 weeks.

That said, I would make sure you count as in-state, if you are at Wellesley. Makes sense that you would be, but I hear KUMC has a reputation for being overly-stingy about this kind of thing. Otherwise, sounds good.

yeah, i'm definitely still in-state. I pay Kansas taxes still and am listed as a dependent on my parents' taxes in kansas. my permanent address is my home address in north topeka. haha

So a 29 is totally legit for EDP? I am sort of going rogue here and considering only applying to KU next year and not doing the typical crazy pre-med 30 schools...

The cut off is a 28 so you should be good for EDP MCAT wise.

Thanks guys! Good luck next year!

Of course nothing will satisfy your nerves like an acceptance letter. That being said, I think you should be fine if your an a Ks resident. I had a lower MCAT, higher GPA and lots of experience and I got an interview to KU that I declined to go to for a billion reasons. But you should be just fine. :luck:

I also have NOT received the email with the student ID information yet.

The student ID was "hidden" within your temporary password. Were you given a temp password even though you already had an account set-up from working there?

I was not. I did receive a prompt to change my current password, but I never got any ID number(s).

I guess I better check on that.

Hey does anyone know if we have to fill out census information before we can enroll? I got some email from KU undergrad saying that we do, but I am not sure if this is true for KUMC. Also is anyone planning on participating in the prematric program this summer?

Has anyone heard anything about financial aid, enrollment, the pre-matric program, second look weekend, etc?

I feel kind of out of the loop.

I have all the paperwork in to financial aid, but it's stressing me out that I still don't know how I'm going to pay for this...

I'm in the same boat. All my paperwork is finished, FAFSA completed, etc. Still haven't heard anything. I had thought a prior email said they would send out more information in late February (I never got that info)...

I emailed them today, but they didn't get back to me yet. I would like to have this ironed out so I know where the money is coming from too.

For those of you that already live in the KC area, where are the best places to live for married students? My wife and I were considering Overland Park or Shawnee. Are those within a reasonable drive to KUMC? We plan to rent while there so any specific apartment/rental property suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

I live in Roeland Park. (which transitions into Mission) and there are a lot of KUmed students in the area. My neighbor is an Ortho resident. So yes for Mission. Overland park your going to have to fight a lot of traffic. Look for places in Mission, Roeland Park, or Fairway. All very quick <10 mins with traffic to get to the med center.

My husband works in Leavenworth and that's where our house is now. This spring we are going to *ATTEMPT* to sell and move to the Speedway area at 435 and Parallel in KCK. It's a new, nice area and is only about 20 - 25 min. I work at KU Med now and the traffic isn't bad at all.

If you live in OP - the traffic will be terrible. You'll also have JoCo taxes. Mission, Fairway, Westwood would all be nice areas. I'm too much "country" to live that far in, though. :)

I am planning to live in either Lenexa, OP, or Olathe. I worked at KUMC while living at my parents in Olathe for two summers and noticed a HUGE difference in morning traffic depending on when you leave. If I got on I-35 (at the 119th St Exit) at 8:30, I could be parked at KUMC in about 20 minutes. If I got on the highway at 7:45, it would take closer to 40 minutes. Given that classes in the morning start at 9, I am not concerned about the traffic at all. The evening commute was a similar story. If I left at 5 it was about a 45 minute drive home, if I left at 6 it was 20-25 minutes. (Evening traffic was consistently a little bit worse.)

For me personally, the evening drive does me good after a long day. Plus my girlfriend will be doing student teaching in Johnson County so it will be reasonably close for both of us. I wouldn't think twice about living out in OP/Olathe. One of the 2nd year students at lunch on my interview day lives in Olathe with her husband and said the traffic isn't an issue at that time of morning.

Thanks for the info. I hadn't really considered Leavenworth but will add it to my list of places to check. Part of where we move depends on where my wife finds a job. She'll be submitting her apps in the next month to her first choice of employers, then we'll go from there. I'm ready to get up there and meet my future classmates. Has anybody heard anything about a second look weekend or the prematric program?

The Second look day is April 30th. All the financial aid is due for new accepted students by April 15th.

I guess EDP applicants don't get to go to second look day??? That's a bummer. (Not like I need to, but, still would've been fun)

You probably do, I was told this by Jason when I asked about it previous. He said that information regarding the second look day will be mailed out later this Spring.

Hi, future classmates! My name's Vincent, and after taking a year after college to do some work I'm really excited to start at KU this summer. I'm an optimistic person, and my hobbies include drawing, reading, and being nice. :D

I'm looking for a roommate if anyone is interested!

Also, does anyone know if there is a way to filter our KUMC inboxes? I appreciate being notified about various events on campus, but it'd be nice to direct these to a separate folder so I can easily find those messages that are immediately relevant to our class.

Thanks, and I'll see you all this summer!

Vincent

I think there's going to be some talk about the tablets at the second look event that's going on this Friday.

I won't be able to attend, but if anyone else is going and happens to learn anything about which tablet we're getting (and why it's so dang expensive), please post and let us know!

I won't be able to attend the second look either. However, from what I do know the computer is usually ~ $1800. They give everyone a nice computer backpack which is about $80-$100, full-tech support, and the rest is software. I'm sure the tech support has some sort stake in the total $2,500. Otherwise the remaining $600 goes to really expensive software. From my knowledge, we get anti-virus, anti-spyware, Microsoft One-Note, Microsoft Office (Excel, word, et al) and a super super super expensive and RAM killing cell microscopy program that's...you got it...really expensive per license.

So ya, for those of you that go please let us know what you hear.

On another note, I heard that taking candy from a baby is easy. A gum ball is what, $0.25? Only 10,000 gum-balls to go before I can get that computer! :(

I'm with Scout, mostly. Working, playing, hanging out waiting. :) I'm just working on getting everything on my checklist done - almost there!

24 days!!!

I can't believe you guys are starting soon! I remember reading through the application thread.... it all seems like yesterday.

Agreed. When I got my letter, it seemed like July 22nd would never get here. Now it seems like the last 6 months have flown by. Can't wait to get going.

BWSTW - keep with it, hope to see you there next year! :luck:

Thanks, me too! Until then, I am hoping this thread picks up when classes start so I can live vicariously through you guys. :D

Lol No I'm not. You are the second person to ask me that... I might have to check him out though. If you are referring to my name, it is actually a play on initials. :)

Gotcha... yeah, I was asking b/c of your name. It's just fun to see where some of these user names come from.

Yeah, they had a thread about that. It was pretty fun to read through everyone's thought process.
