I'm considering buying a few decals to customize my laptop... nothing controversial, just a sports team logo. I'm going to school away from home and would like it as a reminder of my home city.

Do stickers on your computer look unprofessional in a med school environment?

a lot of people have them
i like the cinderella one on the macbook

This is a complete non-issue. Nobody cares about your computer. Some of my classmates would look at what was practically soft-core pornography during lecture and they never got in trouble (though, to be fair, they might have if anyone ever complained or a lecturer really took notice or something). Within reason, I think you're fine with whatever stuff you want to put on your computer.

who goes to lecture lawl

Went to lecture essentially every day my first two years. Honored almost everything first year and everything second year. Worked out pretty well. Lecture attendance comes highly recommended by me.

Who is to say you wouldn't have had the same or better grades or better quality of life had you just watched lectures vs gone to class?

Had a great quality of life. Went to see my girlfriend regularly, hung out with non-med school people fairly regularly, extracurriculars etc. The times I did have to watch lectures online I'd always feel I was missing things if I sped it up. I'd have to go back and listen to certain segments multiple times when watching on anywhere between 1.5-2.0x. I avoided doing this as much as possible because it just wasn't efficient for me and 2.0x never meant I was learning at twice the speed. Sometimes it was unavoidable, though, when a tutee could only meet during class time or I had some sort of meeting that conflicted.

I cannot imagine that not going to class would have gotten me better grades in the few classes I did not honor. Of course somebody else may be different, but I believe it would not have worked better for me. I also think that, while there are those out there who work better when watching lectures at home, most people think they are this type of person and these people are actually rarer than most people think. For what it's worth, a disproportionate number of the high-achieving students in my class were people I regularly saw in lecture. Of course others may be different, but from my own observation I would guess the odds are against any given person on this. I think people should try lecture for a block or so and then decide if it's really not working. Most people bail on it earlier, though, and never know what they're missing.

Whatever, though. I'm not really judging people who don't go to lecture but I'm just putting up a defense of lecture attendance in response to the person who was like "Who even goes to lecture? lolz"

Fair explanation/defense. I'll buy it.

*ahem* Bringing the thread back around again (I also may have attended almost every single class), sports logos and innocent stickers are fine. At some schools, especially those that have a strong faith background, I'd be cautious. If you put smutty stuff on your laptop, you might get called out. For most medical schools, absolutely no one will care.

At all.

Some serious confounding going on there. Of course the lazy people that get behind aren't going to go to lecture. Plenty of people do great in their classes not going at all though if they have a modicum of discipline and just keep up with the material. And, I saved a minimum of 1.6666 full DAYS EVERY MONTH by not going. Best decision I ever made. 2x streaming is the best thing since sliced bread.

But different things work for different people and I'd be very hesitant to recommend either option (always going in person vs always streaming) to anyone. They can figure it out for themselves after a few weeks. I just get annoyed when SDN and/or my school professors act like going to class is a prerequisite to being a good student. Then again, I'm probably just hypersensitive to this after two years of passive aggressive comments at the podcast by professors about how all the "good" students show up at all the lectures. :boom:

Anyways to OP- I personally avoid all laptop stickers. Never know how well that sweet fraternity sticker will pass the test of time.

Depending on the question you're asking, it's not confounding. If you're asking whether you will do better if you go to lecture because you go to lecture, sure it's confounding. If you're asking whether you are more likely to do well if you go to lecture or if you don't, it's not confounding.

Everybody who doesn't go to lecture thinks they are doing it for the right reasons. As you mentioned, a portion of these people are just lazy but don't recognize that's why they're not going. I would maintain that going to class would be a habit that would help lazy people because at least they wouldn't get behind on lectures, but maybe I'm missing something.

Of course there are people it works for, but like I said before everybody thinks they are the type of person it will work for. I think there are less people who actually do better studying at home than in a classroom than most people realize.

Just like everybody thinks they can honor classes coming into first year, everybody thinks they can honor classes while completely setting their own schedule and watching videos at home. I don't think this is the way it works out for a lot of them.

who goes to lecture lawl
People who have to...like my school 😆

Also, I have the most important sticker ever;
Zombie Outbreak Response Team. Since I'm certified, I find it pertinent that people know.
