Which would you prefer and why?

I'm considering between the two and I can't decide!
What would be most essential in dental school?

Apples to oranges. Explain more.

A laptop is obviously going to be much more capable than a tablet. I think it would be stupid to buy a tablet before you own a laptop.

Thanks. I was thinking an Ipad would be helpful for viewing pdf textbooks. And i'm not sure what kind of 'homework' is involved in dental school other than studying.

If you want portability you should get an air or ultra book. I think it's more important to get a laptop then a tablet.

I disagree... I prefer having a desktop at home with an ipad for mobile applications
the battery life, portability, and quick access work really well for me

these could both be replaced with a laptop if you so choose

what I find unnecessary is the combination of a laptop and a tablet

If I were you, I'd look at getting a 13" MacBook Air [http://store.apple.com/us/configure/MD231LL/A?]. They're extremely light and portable, but still a full on laptop (and very very snappy with flash-based storage). Those things are not skimpy little machines by any means despite their thin profiles. If I had to do dental school over again starting today, that's what I'd do.

For reference, I have a 15" Macbook Pro (fine, but I'd rather have a smaller screen actually for weight and portability) and an iPad 2. The iPad is actually super awesome for taking to clinic to view docs and stuff, but if you think you really need one, I think an iPad mini would serve that purpose well.

Again, like I said, I'd go MacBook Air. My MacBook Pro runs like it did when I got it back in 2009, I love it. I think the base model 13" Air is plenty powerful. You could probably even get a year old model for a good discount. Dental school doesn't require a lot of computer power unless you also want it to do Photoshop, iMovie, and stuff like that all the time.

Can you write with a stylus and transfer the words to text using an ipad?

With the right app, yes. I keep mine in handwriting though.

handwriting via ipad?

are there any specific ipad apps helpful for getting through school?

Yeah, handwriting with the stylus. I use Notes Plus. It imports powerpoints and you can write on them by hand which is what I have done for the last two years of undergrad. I access it through other devices and computers using google drive. It's nice because I hate typing notes on powerpoints and I hate printing them out because they have to be so small and end up using a lot of paper.

GOOD NOTES is a life saver! I can download powerpoints, PDFs, word docs, you name it! And I can write on all those formats-- handwritten or typed text. I paid the $5 version to be able to make multiple notebooks.

Are you in dental school now? Do you use an ipad?

MacBook Pro Retina Display 13' is the Cadillac. Still a very thin (and light) profile, with flash memory (no hard drive), better battery than the MB Air, extremely fast, and an amazing display. Only problem is the price but you will be using this thing for a minimum of four years.

Oh, I should have been more specific, but I'm not (yet). Starting this fall, but my d1 friend uses it as well. He loves it. All of his notes are digital. All of the professors at his DS use PowerPoint heavily.

A MacBook is not feasible for me.. Definitely might go with an Ipad or.... Windows tablet+laptop hybrid

You should look at Sony vaio Z series. That's what I'm using. It's lighter than macbook air 13 inch but a bit more expensive. I know my school will require to download certain dental specific programs so tablet won't be ideal.

I'm an undergrad, but fwiw I use notetaker HD on my IPad for all my notes. I can't download powerpoints, tho.

I also used goodnotes and write with a Trent stylus (sold on amazon). It's amazing get an iPad! Portable notes, never again will you have to print slides

Can you download powerpoints onto the Ipad?

Yes. You can keep them as powerpoint (Keynote on the iPad) or convert them to PDF so they can be imported into the various note taking apps so you can write on them.

Take his advice! The man knows comps!!!

How do you convert PowerPoint to PDF?

Get iannotate for the ipad. It coverts pretty much anything to a pdf, and it has several tools to take notes. You can draw, magnify then draw, type notes, highlight etc. Ive used it for a year now, and it has been awesome for dental school. I think it's 10 bucks, but it's worth every penny.

Going the laptop route, how much screen space do you need? Will 12-13 inches be enough or do most people get a 14-15 inch screen?

If you are going Apple, I have a 15" and love it but it gets heavy. As far as school (undergrad) goes I wish I could go back to my 13". I also take all of my notes on my iPad, if you can afford both go with the combo!

Get a laptop regardless of mac vs PC. There is really no need for the portability of an IPad. You will be sitting in lecture hall, in the same seat, plugged in day... after day... after day...

Survivor DO

What are some apps you use to take notes on the ipad?

I use note taker hd, the iWork series, & PDF expert. PDF expert is kind of spendy, like $10 there are others that do almost the same thing but I would go with PDF expert if you don't care about the $10... That will view an edit your pdf, pps, etc. I use iWork more for production. And note taker hd is my note taking app, and then I also have a stylus.

Notes plus is the best app out there for taking notes by hand. You can easily import power points or word documents as PDFs and write on them. It is 8 bucks. I have contacted the developer several times with questions and he gets back to me the same day. In my opinion, it is better than all the others mentioned which I have also tried.

I dont think any tablet is appropriate to replace any laptop..and the thought of owning both---> 😕

Not to replace but to take notes on easily
Without having to print

A laptop is far more important. I would wait for the new intel chip to come out (Haswel). It reportedly can give battery life in the double digits (~12+). This coupled with a flash memory hardrive and a laptop with a good touch screen will beat any tablet! Then again, I am a tech geek =P

laptop is overkill for what we need. We probably all have laptops and need something portable that isn't paper and pencil.

An ipad + iannotate + wireless keyboard allows you to do anything.. Write, type, draw, etc.
