I don't know if this helps anyone, but University of Edinburgh had an announcement on their web page that they are accepting late applications for 2009 entry for both the 5 yr. and 4 yr. programs from UK/EU/Overseas students. If you didn't get in anywhere this round and you really want to go this fall, it might be worth a shot!

Why are they accepting late applications?

haha, I have no idea. Maybe they have extra space now or something...

Maybe fewer international students decided to attend because of finances?

Whatever the reason, good luck to anyone applying! :luck::luck:

could be...or maybe it has more to do with the UK applicant pool, who knows. I still think that it is cheaper to go to Edinburgh than to most OOS vet schools though(depends of course). (hooray for free health care!)

I know, having free health care would be pretty amazing right. And I love Edinburgh as a city, although I have never seen the campus. Also, my SO, who is a singer/songwriter from Nashville, is already set up with a lable/booking agents ect. in Europe and atists get paid so much better over there. Not that I should base my decision for vet school on my boyfriend, but, if I'm hoping he will move with me I have to go somewhere it would work for him too. In so many ways I do feel that it is the best fit for me for vet school, but, I have to wait until I know what Davis says before I can make a final decision. Or if I don't get in to Davis then the decision would definitely be easier. Congrats on your choice to go there and I have a feeling I will be on board. (I meant to respond to your PM with this bit somehow it came out here.)

Are you planning on paying for all 4 years at once because the exchange rate is so good right now?

Thanks for the tip, I actually might apply there now. I was hoping that I could do the 4 year at RVC but since that is not happening I might as well apply to see if I could get into the 4 year at Edinburgh. Do you have any idea of the application process? Is it through VMCAS? I wonder if they will do interviews?

sognidoro, I would go on their website and click on the link it had for "more details." I don't know how long they're accepting them until, so hurry up! The announcement is right on the vet school's homepage. good luck!

RE: Wildzootvet: I kinda wanted to pay for all 4 years with this good exchange rate, but with the way that loans are disbursed, I don't think I could get a loan that big all at once. Also, you never know what could happen...I don't think I would fail out or something- but god forbid it did happen, I would have really screwed myself. I'm happy just paying each year because I've mapped out my financial situation pretty well and I'm more than comfortable with it.

Also, I take back what I said on the thread you started! You should come to Edinburgh hands down, screw davis😉! I was not aware of this SO business, and now I change my statement! Edinburgh is the best choice for you!!😀

I think Im giving it a shot. I got an email back from Edinburgh yesterday detailing what I have to do and Im gonna try and get my package together this week. Thanks hopefulvet!

That is wonderful LVT!! I'm so happy for you! How long before you would know something?? :luck::xf::luck:

Couple of weeks I think. Basically I have to send my support materials and then they decide whether I qualify for either the GEP or the 5 year plan and then send back the formal application for which ever one. When I send that back all my application goes before the admissions committee. :xf:

OH MY GOSH! I feel so honored that LVT2DVM may be going to MY school (well my future school) after all!! Woohoo! Good luck! Maybe Edinburgh will finally be the school with the sense to accept you!:luck:

goodluck LVT.

You deserve it for perseverance

... and other reasons too, i'm sure 🙂

Hey LVT, I am going to apply also. Do you know which address we send materials to? I spent the morning gathering everything and now I realized the contact (Geraldine) didn't make it clear which address it was. I sent her an email but thought I'd check on this forum in case I could get a quicker reply.

Ok nevermind she got back to me already. It's to be addressed to Geraldine herself, but she also said I can send as much as I want electronically so it is faster.

So they are still trying to fill the fall classes? Does anyone think it is worth it to just apply for the 5 year program if I was planning on applying this summer?

And I agree, LVT I hope this works out for you, God knows you have the drive.

Yes, badcats I believe they are.

I hope you guys come to Edinburgh. My SN is so lonely on the final decisions thread...🙁

i likely would have chosen edinburgh if i had gotten into the 4-year program.. they said i didn't have enough chemistry. i did one semester general, two semesters organic, and one semester biochem. oh well...

didn't have enough chemistry?! That's weird. I did 2 semesters gen chem, 2 semesters orgo, and had one semester of biochem when I applied. I don't see how yours is so different except for the 1 semester of gen. chem, but I wouldn't think that should have mattered if you had done all the upper levels...

crazy scotts...😉

Go LVT2DVM! Four-leafed clovers seem doubly appropriate.
:luck::luck::luck::luck::luck::luck::luck:

Hi there,

Would any of you ladies want to team up with me and look for accommodation? I'm a first year medical student (25) on a 5 year course and all of my flatmates will be finishing their Master's degrees and leaving the city in August. I'm looking for a female flat share from September onwards.

I'd be nice to share accommodation with you graduate vets since we're in the same age bracket, and have similarly intensive courses. Many of the students on my course will be exposed to the wonders of self-catered independent living for the first time next year (after a year in catered halls, with laundry etc. done for them) whereas I've lived by myself for 7 years now. Also, I have strong ties to the US, have lived there before, and plan to move there once I finish med school in Edinburgh - so sharing with North Americans would be ideal!

If you're intersted in joining forces with me, do get in touch - I'd love to hear from you!

Actually, I guess it's just you hopefulvet21 who will be attending Edinburgh vet school, of the people here? And maybe LVT2DVM if things work out *crossing my fingers for you*? Unless there are future Edinburgh vet students who haven't turned themselves in...

The pet-friendly flat in Morningside is no longer available -sorry! But send me a PM if you'd like to team up or want any info about Edinburgh in general. Also, I'm happy to meet people (whoever might end up coming to Edinburgh) over tea/coffee in September. Good luck with your applications, decisions and vet school studies, everyone! :luck:

Hi EricaGirl, I've actually already found a place to live in Tollcross near the vet school (sorry!). But I'm sure there are more North American students going to the vet school than just me, they probably just aren't on this forum. Have you posted an ad on gumtree?

So I emailed the lady about Edinburgh, and sent her my grades and a recommendation letter and I got an offer for the 4 year program two days later--a conditional offer, provided I fill out the formal application and verify transcripts! It was a quicker reply than I anticipated, but I'm pretty stoked nonetheless!

I was also accepted to RVC, but this seems like a much better deal considering it is slightly cheaper and also one less year! Still debating because of overall cost, but definitely still an option.

Holy cow! Congrats! That was unbelievably quick. Do they interview over the phone?

HOORAY SOGNIDORO! I've actually worked out Edinburgh to be pretty cheap (at least this year the exchange rate is really good). If you're thinking about what average rent would be, I would say around 330 pounds/month including bills and all. Right now that works out to be only $500/month! It's also nice because your tuition is fixed and will never go up. Even at a high pound to dollar exchange rate, the tuition is really no higher than an OOS school here. And you also don't need to pay for health insurance while you're there!
If you need help convincing yourself to go, let me know! I'd be happy to help! Congrats again!

Haven't been on SDN for a while, but I was accepted and will be attending the 4 year program. You're not alone hopefulvet! I'm impressed that you already found a place to live. Thought I'd be the first one, haha. I'm flying there next week to visit the school and find a flat. How did you go about finding yours? Did you actually visit it, or did you find it online? PM me if you want. Would love to share info 🙂 For anyone unsure about attending, another bonus is that the tuition is set for the 4 years at 20,000
pounds.

Congrats!! Are either of you taking your pets?

I don't have any pets right now🙁 But I was thinking of getting a bunny when I get there...

I am also interested in how you went about finding a flat. I am currently looking for one in Glasgow, and have reservations going about it all online...

Go on http://glasgow.gumtree.com/

I found my flat on the edinburgh gumtree. Gumtree is a step up from Craig's List. It's not as sketchy. I think doing it online is okay, just don't agree to pay anything before you get there. But for me, the person sending me pictures of the flat was good enough for me. I would recommend renting from/with another student. They usually aren't out to rip you off.

Hey Hopefulvet, what is your living arrangement then, are you sharing a place? And how did you know what area to live in?

My living arrangement is a 2 bedroom 2 bathroom place with a kitchen and modest sitting room. It comes to about 335 pounds per month including utilities and stuff. If you're paying over 350-360, find another one. Most are in that range or below for Edinburgh.

Also there's google maps and you can street map it to look around the area and see whats nearby. I am no expert on the city, but from what I've heard/read/seen good places for students to live are Marchmont, Morningsode, Tollcross, Bruntsfield, and anywhere near that. I was told to avoid Leith, which is pretty far from the school anyway. My friend at edinburgh lives in Marchmont. Anywhere near what is known as "The Meadows" (a park- you can google map it too and its called Meadow Park) is good. The vet school is right near the Meadows on the southeast side of it I think. Edinburgh has a huge student population- so you should have no trouble finding students who need another roommate.

Hey everyone!
I just sent my stuff in today to see if I will be accepted or not and I am now looking for a place to live. The big problem-I have two german shorthair pointers(molly and goose) they are 65 pounds a piece. Is there anywhere to live in Edinburgh that will let you have big dogs?!

Hey everyone..
I just emailed Geraldine to ask about how to apply through her. Looking forward to hearing back and applying.
Bad part is my transcript doens't look so hot currently because I have 2 grade changes pending that won't go through til May! I hope this can be "overlooked" and reevaluated or conditionally accepted once those grade changes go through. Those two grades I think are pivotal in my acceptance (or rejection..but I'm thinking positive) and hope to get some understanding.. AHHHHHHHH I'm freaking out!

Just got an email...

The Selectors have now assessed your preliminary application materials to study Veterinary Medicine here at Edinburgh and I am delighted to let you know that we would like to make you a conditional offer of a place on the BVM&S D190 4-year Graduate Entry Programme here at the University of Edinburgh commencing August 2009.

Wow! Just cannot believe it! I would have totally accepted the postition and moved my family to Scotland if UGA hadnt come through in the 11th hour. Hopefully, this means one of you guys have a solid chance. Iheartgoldens, make sure the school knows those grade changes are emminently (sp?) pending. I wish you the best of luck.

I never thought I could be so freakin' happy for someone Ive never met!

LVT forget UGA!!! Come to Scotland!!!!!!!!! This is a great week for you!! Congratulations!

LVT, Congrats again.. I am so very happy for you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you for the advice

my gpa is a bit scary since I'm waiting on those two grades. It's this whole issue that basically sums up this way: Did bad in gen chem 2 first time around because of sad family issues and scraped by with a D.. retook the class and got really ill.. got an INC that is now the FIN (ie, F)

That genchem 2 grade will be changed in May and I'm doing well in the class. The silly thing, I took Orgo 1 and got an A with no problems. (In fact, I LOVE it) The adcoms is going to look and my transcript and say 😕😕

I know the min is 3.4 for Edinburgh which scares me because my current GPA is registering as 3.313. By my calculations, I should have a 3.5 by graduation (2 grade changes pending plus my current 21 credit course load)
Any idea on my chances with this?:scared:

It sounds like they are waiving things a bit to fill the class. You will probably be fine as long as you are not too far off the mark (which you aren't, unless you did really poorly this semester).

Wow guys, this sounds like an awesome opportunity! I haven't heard any whispers about why this is going on, but most people have been away on EMS over the Easter Holiday. Congrats to everyone that has gotten in. = )

They apparently look at the whole application because i just got accepted and have a lower gpa. I did have very good grades in my Chem courses and the rest of my pre-req's, but you never know...so don't despair. GOOD LUCK :luck::luck:

Congrats flyhi! Are you going there over SGU?

Congrats flyhi! Are you going there over SGU?

Thank you!!!! I think so, but i just posted the question for everyone to give me their .02......so help me out please 😀

So excited, so excited....

So why do you think Edinburgh had so much trouble filling their class?

no clue. Maybe they just rejected too many people in the first place and then had to make up for it 😕 who knows.

So why do you think Edinburgh had so much trouble filling their class?

Dunno...but i'm glad they did 😀. Could be as hopefulvet said. They obviously didn't accept enough, just like UGA. Maybe the economy affected those that were considering UofE over a US school, but couldn't justify it in the end?

Regardless......WOOOHOOO.

I just emailed Geraldine (?) last night about the late applications. Does anyone know about the whole late application process and if it is still even available? Can anyone fwd me their email if possible? I am very interested and I dont know if I can wait till Monday to find out about Edinburgh!

Email: [email protected]

You would think that applying to vet school would make me more of a patient person but I fear it may have done the opposite!
