Late Apps being accepted at Edinburgh

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
flyhi, that's great news! Sorry we won't see you around this fall, but it sounds like this will solve a lot of issues at once. Congrats!

Sognidoro, best of luck on your next round of applications, and hopefully you'll get into your in-state when you decide to apply again. I'd be inclined to finish the MPH, as that will be a completed degree IF you decide not to apply again, and you won't burn bridges with your mentor and college. But hey, that's just one person's opinion!

darren, see you in Edinburgh in August! (how crazy does that sound?!?)

If anyone hears anything about EMS, please feel free to post. I'm hoping I might be able to get a waiver for at least a couple of weeks based on past work, but I don't have any info on feasibility of that.

I did find out that the recommended two weeks mixed/large animal practice and two weeks large/equine farm experience are recommended in order to prepare you for EMS in those settings, not that they expect you to obtain four weeks of EMS between now and late July, nor is it absolutely required for admission. I was concerned because I don't know how I'm going to fit everything in, and was worried it would impact my offer of admission, but apparently not. 👍

Trying to just wait and see and not run around like a chicken with my head cut off, trying to put everything in order right now. Next major hurdle - trying to find somewhere to live! 😱

Flyhi:

That is great! I'm glad it all worked out for you. I think Edinburgh has been so accommodating and it makes me look forward to going there and having a responsive administration. However, I am crushed that my kickboxing and pilot lessons will be postponed 😉

I just graduated yesterday and I'm feeling really sad about leaving here. Hopefully I'll start to get a little more excited as August approaches....🙁

At the same time, it pisses me off with how bad my school is at advising pre-vets. 😡 Oh well, we learn from our experiences!

This is so true. SO many schools (including UCF) are just so uninformed about vet school admissions as compared to med school. I went to the Health Sciences Advising office one time in my 2 years there, and basically what he said was "get straight A's in the rest of your classes." 🙄 Really???? Perhaps you'd like to advise me to make sure my name is on the application? Or tell me to turn it in before the deadline? Any other words of wisdom?

So I never went back and started coming here instead.

Next major hurdle - trying to find somewhere to live! 😱

I'm interested in where people are planning on staying - personally I'd like to live in a dorm for the first year; anyone know which, if any, residence is popular among the vet students?

I have no clue which is best, but I know that if you are GEP you qualify for graduate housing and if you are 5 year then it is just the regular dorms. I think you have the option of a residence with a meal plan or without. Glad to hear I'm not the only one going the on campus route, and congratulations flyhi on your deferral!

I'm interested in where people are planning on staying...

I'm going to try to find a room to rent in a flat near the school. If I don't have any luck finding something I'm comfortable with (trying to find something online... 😏) then hopefully there will be dorms available for the first five weeks and I can find an apartment for after that time. Hopefully. I'm not really keen on the idea of a dorm, but I'm a bit older than most of you, and not exactly into the dorm scene anymore.

For me personally, I figure the dorm holds two main advantages:

1) makes life easier during that first year - less cooking, cleaning, bill-paying, commuting, etcetera.
2) makes it easier to meet people, which is a big thing as an international student who knows literally no one there

I guess it all comes down to availability though - has anyone heard anything about whether or not housing will be available for the August portion of GEP? If they can't offer housing for that then I guess I'll have to find a flat off-campus.

Just curious- When you all talk about the dorms, are there separate dorms for vet students? Or would you be in the same dorms as the undergraduates (ie Pollock Halls)? If its the latter, I'd be happy to answer any questions about the dorms, as i'm living in one right now.

Housing is guaranteed for the first 5 weeks of GEP and the whole first year as long as you apply before august. You stay in catered halls and I heard the food is not that great. The students I talked to stayed in Pollock Halls.

Where'd you hear about the guaranteed housing for the first five weeks of GEP? The materials I received in the mail said they were still working on it.

Thanks everyone! I am sooo excited to be doing the GEP next fall.

Is anyone going to be there in July? I am planning a trip to visit and would love to meet you guys if you will be there that early.

It says so in the information on housing I received at the reception in February.

Bummer! I might be taking a trip out in June, but no July. Might be in Vegas in a couple weeks, though! 😀

So.. after careful deliberation, I have decided to stick with Tufts.

I finally did hear back from Kay Aitchison about EMS. She said that I would be responsible for finding my own placement at U.S. sites, so it sounds like there aren't any that she could refer me to. A current student told me that they have a binder with all the providers past students have worked for, but it is a hard copy at the school itself.

I'm bummed I won't be at Edinburgh, though.. what an awesome and exciting opportunity! And that rock climbing aerial course, whoa! I can't wait for you guys to tell me all about it..!

Yea Dolly! Glad to here you will be here in The States to pester and keep me in check. Especially since Flyhi is leaving me for greener pastures. Boohoo. What would SDN ever do without someone to keep the resident a**hole in line. Really, congratulations to both you and Flyhi. I hope to someday meet both of you at an AVMA conference. 😍😍 I myself will probably disappoint both of you with my "real life" facade, but still "rock on". 🙂

Aww, thanks, buddy ::warmfuzzies::

But.. I still would have pestered you from across the Atlantic. Distance is irrelevant on the internets!

I look forward to meeting you too someday. Our first lively "discussion" will be whether it's an AVMA conference or a HSVMA conference (but let's not start now, please).

Sidenote: I've been so busy giggling over the name "Royal (Dick)" that I only yesterday saw the humor in "Easter Bush," especially when taken together. Yay for names that could have come from South Park!

AWWWW MAN....this is a bummer of all bummers 😡

Sorry guys. I was really hoping everyone would end up over there 🙁

Yes, Tiempo...i am a serious non-trad. JUST turned 38, thank you very much 😱.

I believe Murdoch's app cycle is still open - they start in Jan or Feb. Well, if you guys do GEP at Edinburgh next fall, we will be in the same class 3rd year 😀

So, who then is a definite for Edinburgh this year?

anyone else?

I will be starting the GEP program in August too 🙂 I posted a while ago, but haven't been on SDN for a while. I will be living in NYC this summer if anyone wants to meet up. I'm getting nervous, but I'm also very excited. Where is eveyone from? Age? Sex? Me- 24, female, PA.

Yay! Go put yourself on the Final Decisions thread! Getting to be quite the group of people heading to Edinburgh.

I'm from Phoenix, and will be *cough* 31 by the time classes start. Fully expecting to be the old lady of the group, so it shouldn't be too tough to pick me out once we get there! Been out of undergrad and "normal" classes for a long time, so to be honest I'm a bit nervous.

I'll be heading over to Edinburgh next weekend to look around a bit, see if I can find a room. If not, I'll live in Pollock the first 5 weeks and try to find somewhere to live then. If anybody thinks of anything else I should do while there, let me know! (won't have much time as it's just a quick trip, though.)

Tiempo,

Are you back?? How was it? Do tell all, please. I'm headed there in July to peek around.

Still in Edinburgh, actually! Arrived yesterday. Didn't get a chance to do an official school tour (my timing is really bad - it's exam week for the final year students or something) but as this was more of a 'get a feel for the city' trip for me, that's alright. The thought of committing to live here for four years without having seen the city at all was making me nervous. So far, so good! The city is very interesting. Old architecture, new things, and when you look off beyond the city it is surrounded by green fields. Interesting feel.

I've been doing a lot of walking to try to get a feel for some of the neighborhoods and distances, and doing other exciting things like examining bus routes and classifieds sections in newspapers. Walked past the front of Summerhall and *almost* took a picture of the brass name plate on the door, but couldn't quite bring myself to be that cheesy. 😀 Walked by Pollock Halls area, and Arthur's Seat is bigger than it looks in pictures I've seen. Went into Hewat's to ask a couple questions about the "compulsory" clothing (trying to decide if I should buy it here in August or at home to avoid the exchange rate). Prices really not bad, plus you get a 10% discount with student card, so I'm leaning towards here (and then I'd be sure I'm buying the right products).

Weather is certainly different than what I'm used to (it's June and I've been wearing long sleeves and at times a jacket), and I'm thinking a rain coat is going to be a permanent addition to my wardrobe. Sun is shining, then it's raining, then it's sunny, then it's raining... you get the picture. Hardly seems worth pulling out an umbrella when it's just going to be sunshine again in a minute. Going out again shortly to see another room, and luckily it's quite close as the sky is appearing rather threatening at the moment. Perhaps I should take that umbrella after all!

Fun stuff!! I am doing the same trip in July - just to poke around a get a feel for where things are so i can daydream for the next year 😀. I'm a little nervous about it not getting too warm, even in the summer....but such is life. At least i won't have to worry about bathing suit season 😱

Have a great time and let us know how it goes!
