Hi all,

I know it is probably very very very late to even apply for the HPSP scholarship but I would like to ask a few questions to leave no regrets!

1. To those who have husbands, wives, and kids, what was your experience like and how did your family deal with you not being home?
I have a wife and a son, and while I would absolutely love the opportunity to serve the country, I would miss my family very much. So can your family follow you to wherever you get stationed at? How long is each tour?

2. Is it still possible to apply?

3. What are some of the standards for a competitive candidate?

4. Army, Navy, or Air Force; is there a particular branch of military that is "easier" to the family?

I have always wanted to serve the country and I am not doing it for the money for sure, BUT I do need to know how it is going to affect my family before I start the process, so I would greatly appreciate all of your helps.

Thanks!!

It is too late to apply to for the 4 year scholarship. This summer you can apply for the 3 year.

2. Yes, you should get in contact with a recruiter ASAP and get the ball rollin for 3 year HPSP.

3. good GPA and DAT scores are obvious but you also need to pass medical screening tests.

4. I heard that it's army>navy>AF in terms of toughness. However, it's the other way around in terms of competitiveness to get into the program. You should apply to all 3 branches to maximize your chances..

Thanks!
I did submit the request for more info last night for all 3 branches and hopefully they will get back to me tomorrow.

So for 3 yr scholarship, does it start in the 1st yr or 2nd yr?

If you search the threads, it's apparent that being in the Navy could involve being a dentist on a carrier which, from what I've gathered, means more time away from home during deployments, training exercises at sea ect. Of course, you could be stationed in a regular clinic as well. This is just my impression from what the AD Navy dentists have posted. I think just about anyone in the military would tell you to be prepared for the possibility of deployment if you're going to take the scholarship.

In reference to Navy dentistry, we are on ships other than carriers. We also supply dental care with the Marines as well.

So when you are on ships, how long do you have to be away from your family? And how often?

Thanks!

So I have been talking to the recruiters from Army, Navy, and Air Force, and I am curious what made you guys choose what you chose?

Also how thorough do I need to fill out the application?
I am doing my best to answer the questions on the application but some questions I just do not have any answers to and I am not so sure if I have to fill in every single blank?
Like for all of the references, do I need to get the physical addresses or can I just put N/A and fill in whatever I know?

Thanks.

This is a scholarship application, you want to be as thorough as possible. I listed the addresses of my references.
As for choosing a branch, personal preference. If you're unsure, you can apply to multiple branches and see which one accepts you.

This has been answered to death. Search the "Ask a Navy dentist" thread stickied at the top of this sub forum.

Did you talk to a recruiter for the Navy about a 3 year HPSP? I called my recruiter yesterday and they told me that they were only offering those to people on the wait list for 4 year scholarships.

The 3 year scholarship opens in october and I was told to contact them again around that time.
