My understanding is that late in the residency interview process, interview spots sometimes open up, as some applicants will cancel their later (January) interviews. Does anyone know when applicants are most likely to notify residency programs that they will not be attending these interviews? I'm a residency applicant who is considering sending emails out to some of the programs I've applied to in order to ask them to consider me for any interview spots that may open up, and I'm wondering what the best time to do this would be. Is it already too late to do this?

There is no "most likely". People cancel a few weeks ahead, a week ahead, a day ahead. If you are local or ready to just jump on a plane, you might get lucky if your application crosses a coordinators desk at the same time as a cancellation. The goal for programs is to have every interview day schedule relatively full. It's expensive for some places to run an interview day for just 1-2 people.

Not too late; I just got off the waitlist at a program in the next state over, yesterday.

People are getting tired of interviewing by now. There's really no way to tell if you'll get a spot though or when.

I called a couple of programs and let them know I am still interested in interviewing there and was free to come interview at a moments notice since I was done. Told I was on waitlist

Got a call from one of them....interview tomorrow. 2 days notice. Being flexible helps!

Received another interview offer today from a program I called about 10 weeks ago that told me I was not quite good enough for them to interview when I had several offers from much better known programs.

I will still go because I have never been to that area and want to see it. Free hotel and such. And can miss time from rotations. And you never know..................I might like it.

But, the point is there are still interviews to be had. Play the game until the end. After a month off from interviewing, I got my second wind. And decided to just go and have another program to rank.
