Hi. I am a Canadian applicant who applied around early December. I read here that it was the best to apply as soon as possible but was busy with research and such. I've already gotten into NYU but my real dream school is Columbia. When I call them, they say it's still under review. Although the interview dates are done, they say there might be a very small chance that an individual interview might open up. I was just wondering how likely it was. Also, should I consider going to NYU for a year and transferring to Columbia for my second year? And, is this a lot harder than just waiting it out for a year?

My stats are

3.73 cGPA
3.72 science GPA

23 AA
23 TS
21 PAT

Thank you!

You scores are wonderful and you will have a very good chance of getting in Columbia if you reapply again next cycle.
Don't ever go to NYU and think you can transfer to Columbia's second year ! That will rarely or never happen. You might end up staying at NYU. 🙄
Ask yourself, do you really want to go to NYU? 😍
a). If not, then wait for 3 months and reapply again.
b). If yes, go for NYU and never regret your decision.
Good luck to you ! :luck:

I personally would not wait out a whole extra year if I got in to a school. Would you really wanna go through the pressures and stress of reapplying again? Also what if you don't get in Columbia next year are you just gonna keep trying until you do?

exactly, there is what 12,000 applicants....really the odds are stacked against you even though your stats are great..one of my interviewers put it simply "if you get in somewhere and its not your first choice,RUN WITH IT. You do not want to be put back into the applicant pool"

I agree that I would hate to go through the application process. I was also curious whether interviews ever open up after the interview process closes. Even though the person I talked to on the phone told me that it has happened before and that the fact that I haven't been rejected yet is better than a rejection, I am a little skeptical that an individual interview will occur. Has this ever happened to anyone in the past?

Thank you.

Okay here is my advice. Attend NYU.

I have almost identical stat as you. ~3.8 GPA, 24TS, 22AA and 25 PAT and I'm also Canadian.

I applied late August and didn't get an interview from Columbia (still not rejected like you).

There is NO guarantee that you will receive an interview from Columbia next year. Even if you receive an interview, Columbia's intervew/acceptance ratio is pretty low so it is a bad gamble if you decided to re-apply next year.

Honestly, I don't think this is solid advice.

Listen to the other posters. I know that Columbia might be your dream school, but at some point most people need to face reality. Where you go to school does not make you a better or a worse person. Nor should it determine how you feel about yourself. Be grateful for the opportunity that has been granted to you. You have the chance to become a dentist, why would you possibly give that up? It's too much of a risk to reject NYU and reapply, IMO.

I would go to the best school you get into this cycle. There is no good reason to wait another year (unless you have unexpected health problems or family emergencies).

Plus, downtown is so much cooler than the upper west side 😉

Hello. Thank you everyone for your input. I am going to send in my deposit.

I am kind of curious about this. By being "under review" still at Columbia even though the official interview dates have been done, does this actually mean that I am in consideration or are they waiting for more of a convenient time to send my rejection letter?

Thank you.
