Hello,

I have received a 507 on my previous MCAT. As a reapplicant, I decided to retake the MCAT, and the score should be back in about a month. I retook the MCAT to increase my chances for MD. The issue I am facing is this:

I plan on submitting my ACCOMAS application without telling them I retook the MCAT and the just telling them when I get the new score (because I obviously can't and also should not hide the MCAT score). My reasoning is that I do not want to delay my DO application cycle any more than necessary. I'd assume they'd get my new MCAT score back before interviews anyways.

My hope/bet is that this will not negatively impact how they view my application (as in they won't get mad that I waited for the score to tell them about my MCAT retake). Am I right on this thinking?

With a 507 first MCAT, it probably won’t matter and they will process your app anyway. Secondly, even IF they decide it matters, your score will still be back so incredibly early that it won’t matter. Hypothetically, you could decide the day before to take an MCAT, in which, it wouldn’t show up on your primary app anyways once you submit it. I definitely would not hide it though - since your first score is high enough that it shouldn’t matter.

You'll get screened on your 507 score, and no med school will wait to see your newer score. And no, they won't hold it against you, unless your score turns out to be worse.

Does that mean I should/can do that (apply) for MD as well (before I get the new score back)?

You could, but MD is different. A 507 is a really great score for all DO schools, but I’d below average for most MD schools. Applying with a 507 to MD schools will mean that they will screen you based on that score, and if nothing else, you may be immediately screened out.

In short, 507 is strong for DO and below average for MD. You could apply DO now, and wait for MD if you so choose since the applications are different

Thanks a ton @Rogue42 and @Goro, I think I'll act on that insight. For those reading, though, I'll still try and get my MD app ready and verified before the score comes back so that I can hit the ground running (with DO top on my to do list).

507 is at or below average for at least three DO schools now.

My class, 2022, is 507.
The incoming class, 2023, is 508.

Both numbers are directly from our admissions office.

Sorry if this is an ignorant question, but how could they know the average MCAT for the class of 2023 right now if people are still able to withdraw?

It was the average as of the time that the question was asked. You're correct, that number can in fact still change!
I've been told that the overall is currently 508 and OOS is currently 512.
