1.Applications statistics as of 10/5/01:
38,927 applications initiated

23,363 applications completed and submitted to AMCAS

19,448 Number of Applicants for whom applications have been printed and
FedExed

2.Verified applications:

As of this afternoon, 10/9 at 4:30 p.m., AMCAS has verified 9,876 of
the
23, 363 applications submitted. Our goal is to verify approximately
17,000 applications by November 1 and the remainder before December 31,
2001.

3. Printing submitted applications:
We have printed and mailed just over 19,000 of the 23,363 applications submitted, and continue to print submitted applications as the print files are delivered to us by our developers. We have almost closed the gap between those submitted and those printed and distributed.

you have to realize that there's only 23,000 completed aps. That number will go up, but I'm pretty sure there won't be 38,000 applying this year. I sincerely doubt that everyone filling out AMCAS will complete the ap.

WE'RE DOOMED!!! Those numbers sound horrible. It could be January before some applicants hear ANYTHING from schools. And to think, I rushed to get the AMCAS app submitted on 7/7! Nothing happenin' in my neighborhood.

We're not doomed. It just means that this year, rolling admissions will not play a significant role. That's a GOOD thing! Rolling admissions is a very silly idea.

Rolling admissions, it seems, WILL play a role this year - in my view, a significant one. Schools with rolling admissions are not likely to wait for all their applicants' apps to be verified before granting admissions. That means that those who are lucky enough to be verified have a distinct advantage with respect to admissions at schools that use rolling admiss...By the way, I submitted 7/24 and no movement in my app at all - frustrating.

I also want to thank Baylor06 for the post - and please update us with more info as it becomes available to you. I have a pre-med advisor - but she is inept - I don't get email updates about the AMCAS situation from her at all...

By the way, I agree rolling admissions are rediculous.

Rolling admissions would not have been so good if I had not tried to use it to my advantage this year. Boy, what a year to try that!

Maybe something good will come from this AMCAS mess. Only 23,000 completed applications! From what I'm reading in front of me right now, 38,000 applied in 1999 and 47,000 applied in 1996. Admittedly, there's still time before the dealine (for those people who like waiting until the last minute) and not all schools work through AMCAS, but seems like there'll be a huge drop this year. Think about the reduced competition...

That's what I've been thinking, Eclipse! 🙂 AMCAS is apparently predicting 35,000 completed apps, but I don't think they'll get nearly that many. I think it'll be between 26,000 and 30,000. There was another thread about this and some folks thought that it would only be the bottom end of the applicant pool that didn't finish their apps, so that although, statistically one's chances would be better, the actual outcome wouldn't be affected. Probably true, but I still like thinking about the possibility of an improved probability of admission. 😀

This is not the last minute at all. First off, a lot of people felt very comfortable submitting later because of the problems. Second, schools have deadlines going all the way to December 31st.

Not the school's I'm applying to (they're mostly oct 15th or nov 15th), so those completed AMCAS #'s sound great to me!!
