Has anyone received an interview invite from UW-Mad. since 9/19 (last time anyone posted an interview)? It seems like they were really quiet until one week in September, when they offered a few invites to people complete in July, and now dead silence for the past two weeks. I have no idea what is up with their admissions office, and was just wondering if anyone had anything to report. Just (sort of impatiently) waiting for some love from my home state peeps. . .

Yeah.. UW kinda frustrates me. Last year it was auto invites to in-state people so I heard back about 2 weeks after I sent in all my requirements. However, this year I have been informed of a change, but it was not until I called them (The frustrating part is that, more than ever, schools are leaving students in the dark until they call. Don't admissions offices want to avoid having thousands of students call them and put out simple emails to keep us from pulling out our hair.. okay, that was a rant)
Anyway, here is what UW sent me after I called.

"Dear University of Wisconsin MD Program Applicant,

Our Admissions Committee has completed their preliminary review of your application. From the preliminary review the Committee selects applicants whom they wish to invite for interviews. Some applicants are being invited in upcoming weeks and months. Others, such as yourself, are being held for possible interview invitation later in the review cycle.

This is a different process from what was used in recent years. Should you be reapplying please recognize that the Committee process and timeframes are different from previously. "

This sounds surprising like the MCW smaller pool, but still rather "large", of individuals they like, but cannot offer an interview... yet, hopefully. I wish I knew how the Committee process and timesframes were different, or what they were before and what they are now. Oh well.

Good Luck!

UW is inviting about 300-350 in state applicants this year rather than offering interviews to all in state students over 3.1/24 (which was about 600-650 last year).

While this means that a lot fewer people will be getting interviews, Dean Wall said that 75-80% of in-state interviewees would be accepted. I don't know how the timing of their interview invites are, or anything, but I hope that info helps.

In past years, a lot of people would be interviewed who had a relatively low chance of being accepted, so that's probably one of the reasons they changed the process.

Damn, hell yeah for us!

p.s. I got my interview invite about a week and a half ago

Yeah, that makes a lot more sense. I like those odds too, once you get to the interview of course. Come on Badgers!

Still waiting for my interview, UW....but then again, I wasn't actually complete until Oct. 2. Stupid LOR mix up.😡

I'm sure you'll be fine. They're taking their time with the interview invites I think, the first couple groups were pretty big as I understand.

Wisconsin, woot woot! I wouldn't worry, when I scheduled my interview they said interview dates went through at least January. I think they will be sending out more invites in the coming months.

I got my invite oct 4, so there has been some activity since the last post on the interview thread. It seems like they haven't offered too many interviews so far, so I wouldn't worry too much!

hopefully the interview invites r coming out slowly cuz theyre focusing on going over the applications of those interviewed already (that's at least what i'm hoping, im getting impatient of waiting for a decision)

I got an interview invite on Monday the 15th (OOS) so they are still giving out invitations.

Where did you hear that?!? I am in-state, invited 9/26, interviewed 10/12. This is excellent news if it is true!!! 👍

This is totally off topic, but I had a question regarding WI residency...
I lived in WI from 1988-2000, graduated from a WI high school, and then moved to MN. I am have been in MN since 2000 and will graduate from the U of Minnesota. Am I able to claim any sort of WI residency in this case? my folks don't live there anymore, but my wife's do...
Sorry to interrupt the thread, feel free to PM me if ya got any suggestions.
Thanks

I would e-mail them with this question. I moved to WI my junior year of high school and attended University of Wisconsin for undergrad, but they were reluctant to give me in-state tuition which leads me to believe that they are stringent in their residency policy.

Also, does anyone know when Wisconsin starts sending out acceptances and in what form? I interviewed there on 10/5, and I'm wondering when I will hear from them.

Eric, I hate to sound discouraging, but realistically the chance of you getting in-state tuition is vanishly small. Each situation is different, and I would still encourage you to ask, but the fact that you were gone 7 years, got married and then settled down OOS really puts a dagger in this one.

Booyah, I was told by the head of the adcom that the typical response time for UW is 4-6 weeks.

I would still love to hear more details/verification of the changes that have been made to the in-state interview selection process.

I distinctly remember during my interview process that Lucy Wall mentioned that the amount of in-state interviews was drastically decreased. She also mentioned that the IS acceptance rate of interviewees was something ridiculous like 70% and that the OS acceptance rate of ~20-30%.

Thanks for the info booyah. I forgot to mention before that UW notifies via snail mail. 😱

Is UW your top choice or something? You already got three offers from med schools in Texas. Their tuition isn't that bad either.

It's acutally not too bad for OOS. They interviewed 150 OOS applicants last year and ultimately accepted 99. That's 66%! But only 32 OOS matriculated.

According to Dean Wall, for this year:
In state acceptance rate ~75-80%
OOS acceptance rate ~35%

Last year's stats are irrelevant. They are inviting about one half as many in state and about the same or slightly less OOS but giving less OOS acceptances. They apparently would like the percentage of in state to be about 90%. I'm sure their low yield from OOS had something to do with it, that's a serious waste of time for the school if only 1/3 of OOS ended up going.

As far as the in-state interview process goes, they are doing a preliminary qualitative review this year, rather than just auto-inviting those who have 3.2/24, which drastically increases the chance of in state acceptance post interview.

i wouldnt call it my "first choice" but its definitely up there, id love to have the problem of having to choose between WI and TX

US mail is only for acceptance notifications correct? Interview invitations are by email? Please let me know otherwise I need to start watching the mail more closely.

correct

Is anyone else on hold at UW or know anything about being placed on hold there? They just mentioned applications would be reviewed later in the process, if someone could please inform me of how much later that is, that would be great. Thanks!

I'm pretty sure this is the first year they've done this, so I have no idea how long it will take.

hey guys

I was wondering, how many applicants does UW interview in a certain interview day? is it around 20, or is it like MCW, around 60? I have my interview there Nov 30, and I'm hoping there are still spots open.

There were about 25ish on the first interview day, and that was considered a big group...

MCW has 60?!?! they must fill up their class after like 6 interview days... Hey, is anyone else on a pre-interview hold at UW (and very surprised to be on it)? Drizz.. you hear from Case or Wisco yet? I'm very excited for MCW on Friday, it is my top choice (well tied with UW) and in my hometown, who knows, we may talk to eachother next week and not even know it. Best of luck to everyone who wants to be a badger.

On hold at Case, no word from CCLCM or UW yet, apparently no one from my interview group (the first one) at UW has heard, though, so I'm not worried. I live in CA so if they notify by mail it will take longer for me to hear than ppl in WI in any case. I should hear word on SDN before I get anything in the mail, I would think, unless they're going to call people. Sounds like a lot of people will be at MCW including some other SDN people, cool 🙂 Yeah I'm really excited to see MCW also, my cousin goes there currently!

Did anyone from the first interview group (October 5 interview date) hear anything today? I'm not sure why it's taking so long... you'd think if anyone heard as early as the 4 week minimum, it would have been that group.

I interviewed early Oct. as well, and I too was getting worried that I hadn't heard back yet. I couldn't take the waiting anymore so I called the admissions office today to see if there were any updates. I was told my letter had not been sent yet, but it would be within the next 1-2 weeks max. I am terrified. :scared:

I interviewed Oct. 12th. The suspense is driving me nuts!

Hm, I wonder when the ppl who interviewed on the 5th will hear. Are you IS?

I called today and was told that my letter was sent on Tuesday the 13th. Finally, just a couple of more days and I will know!

Interesting, if that's the case, I wonder why none of the people that are in WI have said anything yet... maybe I will call them tomorrow or something.

You should.

Well, I live in CA also, but I happen to be in WI at the moment. If they're sending it to my home address, I'll have a long wait, so yeah, calling them may be a good idea, heh.

Update:

I called UW and they said they sent my letter already, and I told them I would be out of town (in WI incidentally) until after Thanksgiving and they said I was accepted and could pick up a copy of the letter in person!!!!!!! 😀 YAY!

Congrats Drizz!!!!!!! I can't wait to hear, but I am so scared 😱😱😱😱. So much is riding on that one little letter.

I called in this morning and they said letters have been sent out on Tuesday. I asked anyway what the decision was and I got in!! 😍

Congrats Trop, you are on a roll!

Thx and good luck, aim!

I got in! Congratulations, Tropicana, and good luck everyone! I got my letter in the mail today. I wasn't expecting it this soon, but it was a great surprise.

Trop,

What's your first choice among those that you have acceptances from so far?

A 2-way tie between UW and Rochester, with OHSU not too far behind.

I also applied to OHSU and will be interviewing there. What was your impression of the place? I've heard that the interview day undersells how great the school is. I don't mean to hijack this thread (you can PM me if you want). Thanks.

yeah the school is much better than the interview day actually conveys. i recommend asking a lot of questions to current students and interviewers to to see if OHSU is right for you. this was my interview feedback:

So everyone that heard already, did you interview on the 5th? Has anyone from the 12th heard yet? Congrats to everyone who made the cut so far!!

I'm pretty sure Tropicana interviewed on the 12th...
