There's this program at school where you attend 7 2-hour workshops and do 3 hours of community service (over the course of two years) and you get a certificate. It's called Leadership Academy. Would that help me become a better physician and/or look good to med schools, or is it not worth it? I've talked to people who run it and they say "employers love it" but I have my doubts.

Total of additional 14 hour time commitment (not including cs, but i'd get that covered anyways)

Not worth it; ADCOMs would probably view such an addition as BS resume padding. You have 15 activity slots to fill out- what you choose to present tells ADCOMs alot.

Long term commitments are looked upon favorably because they show you actually care about the work that you did. I think the best way is to be involved in an organization long term and work your way up to leadership positions. Thus, while this workshop may actually teach you valuable leadership skills, it probably won't be all that beneficial to your application.

3 hours of community service over 2 years?? 😕

This is Laugh WAY WAY out loud. Dude, if you are smart don't think twice about not doing this.

Trust me this will in absolutely NO WAY show leadership. Study for your MCAT, it is 1000x more important than ECs

This guy may be a douche bag, but for once what he is saying IS true. Well, at least the first part -- this activity won't help you. That said, the MCAT is important early on. The ECs become important primarily at the interview/post-interview stage.

I thought the same exact thing.
