How does one get into leadership type positions - for example, licensing boards, even NRMP committee, etc?
I'm interested in this but have no clue how to go about it.
Sorry if it's posted in the wrong section!

Start small and work your way up. Nobody goes from random hospitalist to State BME without several steps in between.

Make friends with the people in the position you’re interested in having.

For the nrmp and such get involved in your specialty society or state medical association. These are often the people who nominate those who sit on the bigger national organizations. The actual process will be variable from society to society and depending on if you are a student, resident, or attending.

For the state licensing board, this is extremely variable. It is often a political appointment by the governor. Even still, getting involved with your state medical association is probably your best way to get your foot in the door.

In South Carolina, the majority are elected by the people, by district! In my district, it was a neurosurgeon - good guy.

Are these positions typically paid or volunteer?
