Learning Sacral/Pelvic Diagnosis in the middle of Neuro Block.

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
That sucks. It makes me glad we did sacral/pelvic diagnosis and treatment last semester. It will get easier. Just pray that one of your objectives for the practical is to diagnose and treat an inferior innominate shear. :xf:

Lol. Our OMM practicals are cumulative so you can get anything from earlier blocks. If my pattern continues, I will get thoracic Dx with muscle energy Tx. Like every other time.

Sent from my Droid RAZR MAXX HD. Typos may be present. I hope there are some hilarious ones.

Ours are cumulative as well. I had some soft tissue stuff on my final when we had just finished sacral and pelvic.

Sacrum is awful. I finally got the hang of it but still have to move my hands in space to figure out the mechanics and diagnosis.
Learning sacral at the same time as neuro is just plain cruel. Poor curriculum planning on the school's part. Ick.

Aw come on, it's not that bad. The hardest part is remembering the treatment maneuvers.

...oohhh i see how it is now!!

omm= foreplay

Gaah.

That is all.

I.Hate.OMM.

came in with an open mind, realized 90% of it is a load of cr*p with weak research to back it up, OMM profs continued to claim OMM treats things like meningitis, pneumonia, etc...... proceeded to be depressed during OMM Class, then started turning OMM class into board studying time on my iPad.

I turned a bad thing into a "good" thing. You can too.

I think some of it is cool, some of it is lame...

Either way, remember that if you have to take the comlex, you'll have to know at least some OMM, otherwise you'll fail it... no good...

We are learning pelvis/sacrum during renal... BUT, we have our finals and SPs for clinical med and OMM during neuro... so which would you rather do??

Gaah.

That is all.

You could say the same thing in reverse too. (learning neuro during sacral/pelvic)

Both of those subjects are tough.

But while I hate OMM for the most part, once you get the hang of Sacral Diagnosis it's the easiest thing in the world. But for some reason, getting there is really tough for most folks.

Just do the same thing every time. For me it's (SFT lateralization/ASIS compression test)-->(Sacral Base depth)-->(STL tension).

From those 3 points I can usually tell how the sacrum lies and come up with the correct diagnosis.

Treatment on the other hand...

CB: I have the same teachers you had. Sacrum is just hard. I finally got it this time last year but for those of us who aren't mechanically inclined, are not visual learners and are NOT memorizers, OPP in general can be tough.

I thought sacral was pretty easy. Seated flexion test does most of the work, then just test sacral base and ila for torsions. Neuro on the other hand sucks hardcore, plus my teacher is God Aweful! New faculty member...

Btw, I'd be ashamed to go to a DO school and hate OPP. Just sayin.

Good thing you don't then...apparently.

Me on the other hand, OPP just isn't what I thought it might be and I learned that I really didn't like doing it. Nothing to be ashamed of there, I don't like surgery either. It's all too boring for me. I don't think that makes me a "bad DO". I just know that I'm not that procedurally oriented.

I understand not wanting to become a specialist in OPP, but to claim that you hate it and that its a waste of time is just sad. I don't want to specialize in it, but I love learning it because it sets us apart. We can do something that very few doctors do.

"Because very few do it", is not a good enough reason for me to get jazzed on OMM. Very few doctors offer acupuncture, essential oils, and aromatherapy too. That doesn't make them any more appealing to me.

I just struggle with the paucity of evidence. Aches an pains? Sure, come on over here and I'll HVLA, ME, CS those away. But to treat GI distress with celiac plexus inhibition? Sorry if I don't buy it.

I actually want to be good at it. Some concepts I get and use. Others not so much. I probably won't use those....

Some of who I had are no longer at LECOM which is unfortunate. NEURO SUCKS totally and I really wanted to drop out of medical school because of it.

Don't stress too much about sacrum, it comes in time. I'm not saying its hard but I think they make it harder than it needs to be. It's really about getting through the hateful questions because the practical usually isn't that hard.

Thanks CB ;) actually I was one of the few weirdos who loved Neuro--it's M1s who are suffering through it now.
We just started Endocrine...I'm not enjoying that nearly as much.

Bump because we're in the middle of neuro now and we have to remember dx the sacrum and every treatment we've learned since day 1 of medical school for our practical tomorrow.
