Congratulations AJG!! Giving up any spots?

Unfortunately I won't be giving up any spots. This was my first acceptance. I'm still waitlisted at TOURO NY and LECOM Erie.

Good Luck to everyone still waiting. :luck: There's definitely still time for plenty of waitlist movement!

I hope so! Either way- congratulations!

wow congrats ajg3456!!! :biglove: looking forward to meeting you soooon!

I talked to LECOM Bradenton yesterday and was told the class was full but they are still reviewing files; this week in fact. They could tell me mine was being looked at but they wouldn't tell me if all files were being looked at. I suspect they are. Also the turn around time for deposits to those accepted will be going down to 10 days then down to 48 hours eventually so that open slots will move quicker. 🙂

Unfortunately for me I've only got a few more weeks until it will be too late for me to go there. 🙁 Move time and such. LECOM Bradenton is my first choice because of family in the area. To those of you who might still be holding on to multiple acceptances please decline the spots you don't want now. It could mean someone gets an offer of acceptance too late to attend. It could cost someone their school of choice. 👎

is it a good sign if they call you and ask you if you're still interested?

Absolutely! I believe they've done that for all of the people so far accepted off the waitlist

is it a good sign if they call you and ask you if you're still interested?

absolutely!!! for me, the call meant that i was in the next group of 10 on the waitlist. good luck!!!:luck::luck:

june 20 was the deadline when my deposit had to be in by, so they should be considering people on the waitlist now depending on how many deposits they received.

Usually, when the deposits don't come in they'll offer spots to others. But, last week five people got dismissed from the class of 2010 for academic reasons. Some of those will appeal and might be able to re-take the entire first year if the appeal is successful. Some spots will go to them in that case.

I'd give you more info if I had it, but I've been in Las Vegas since Monday, so I'm kinda out of the loop at the moment. Good Luck to everyone still on the list, though!!!:luck::luck::luck:

this is sooo not good. ugh 🙁

Is that normal for that many people to be dismissed? Did these people appear to be slackers or could they just not cut it? Just curious.

The majority of people are dismissed in the first year. The stats are available from AACOM on their website. Some people left after the first semester voluntarily because they decided they weren't cut out for med school-- not everyone is. The folks dismissed last week were borderline people academically. Remember, you aren't allowed to fail ANY classes. There are methods of remediation, however, if you do. Also, keep in mind that some people are not cut out for PBL. Some of those who were dismissed were asked to re-apply at the Erie campus later for the lecture-based program. PBL really takes a lot of self-discipline, but it is a wonderful way to learn medicine. Out of a class of 160, this is an average number of dropouts.

Most of those folks dismissed would make really great doctors in my opinion, yet there are academic standards that must be maintained. Med school will be harder than anything you have ever done. It can be tough in other ways too. I have one classmate that may be getting divorced soon. No, that's not a normal occurence, but you need to be prepared for the stress-- it can be enormous. You'll be working your butt off in order to survive...just know that going in and it won't be so bad.

The majority of people are dismissed in the first year.

That seems like an absurd number out of 160 people. No offense, but that doesn't say a lot about the admissions process. I would be pretty upset if I was not accepted at Brandenton or put on the waitlist hearing that stat. Everything I've read or heard says that getting in is the hard part, but medical schools do their best to try to make sure people get through. They are investing a lot of time and effort in training the matriculants. I realize that PBL students have to be very self motivated, and the demands are rigorous. I am doing ISP at Erie. However, having over 80 people getting booted or quitting during the first year is hard to believe even if it is true.

Where on Earth did you get 80 people from? 5 got dismissed this semester-- about the same number left after 1st semester. The average dropout rate over four years is about 10% of the class nationwide, and most of those are in the first year. Very few are ever dismissed after that.

I read it as the majority of the class in your original statement. But you meant the majority of the 5 or so.

That was cute thinking it was half of the incoming class who got dismissed... and yes, as a current alternate I would be highly affended if that were the case 😀.

Off the subject (kinda) looking at the attrition rate of DO schools, LECOM B is right on average at 3.12% not completing after their first year... interesting enough, out of this rate, less than half (~43%) of the students who did not complete their first year did so due to poor academic standing or failure. It lists personal reasons, etc. as the reasons why over half decide to leave after their first year. I think this speaks very highly of admissions committees in choosing students who are likely to succeed academically.

You can look at the stats here:
http://www.aacom.org/data/annualreport/slideshow/index.html

Now if I can only get that call... sheesh...

Hey scpod! Please let us know if you hear anything else about spots open. I'm hoping, praying, and crossing everything I can find 🙄... oh, and also sending in letters and k'ing.i.t. hey, it can't hurt!

Although I must admit that after reading the post that the class is filled, all I could do is go take a nap 🙁

I made that post and just wanted to clarify. I was told the class is currently full but they assured me that more spots could open up at any time and they are still reviewing files. I spoke to them on the 20th which I believe was the deadline for some of the accepted alternates to get their deposit in. I know from other threads on this site there are people out there holding multiple acceptances and are waiting to decline schools until their financial aid at their school of choice goes through. Hence my plea for them to give up those extra spots.

I guess my main point is, yes time is getting short but there is still hope for us on the alternate list at LECOM Bradenton. I see no reason to give up hope yet. Hang in there!🙂

I just wanted to make everyone waiting aware of what I was told.

Shasta, I appreciate the encouragement... and on your previous post I think you did a good job in adding that the list move again once people start moving around. It's just me being dramatic 🙄. I spoke to someone there last week, too, who told me to things could change up to the first day of class as seats could change up until then... she just didn't tell me that the class was already full... and I didn't ask, cause well, I honestly didn't want to know.

I guess seeing this words preceded by LECOM B felt like a little foot pushed in my gut... (hence the need for a nap). This is suuuuch a process... and I am SO trying to hang in... yeah, still hanging in there..... 👍

btw, where have you been accepted? I know u mentioned Lecom-B is your first choice, so I assume you have options...

I've been accepted at DCOM and waitlisted at LECOM-B and Touro-NV. That's why I encourage you to hang in there, I just got into DCOM a few weeks ago. It can happen at anytime. Let me know if there is anything I can help you with. Other than crossing my fingers :hardy::luck::hardy::luck:

Hey all you LECOM-B peoples!

First CONGRATS on getting accepted!

Second, I have started a google group with information, updates, and advice from older LECOM-B'ers. Check it out when you get a chance!

http://groups.google.com/group/2011lecomb?hl=en

There are also two facebook groups:
LECOM-B group and a LECOM-B c/o 2011 group that are also helpful

GOOD LUCK!

ps. keep your calenders open... we're planning some days of fun before classes start!

cya in a few weeks!

so tell me what you guys think. Lecom called me and told me I was in the next group to be taken off the waitlist but they wouldn't give me my rank number. I know they've already accepted a lot of people so at this point, do you think it's even realistic to hope for an acceptance?

It's definitely a good sign....at least better than nothing. Did they say anything about sending you any of the student packet stuff to start working in the meantime? I think the past couple people on here that posted about getting a similar phone call eventually got in.....just depends on if there's enough movement on that waitlist.

Are you holding onto any other acceptances in the meantime?

Goodluck!!! Let us know when you hear something.

... do you think it's even realistic to hope for an acceptance?

Yes, it's still June. You have most of the month of July to be accepted. Lecom-B usually has a cutoff date in mid July where you need to send in all of your paperwork from your physical, background check, immunizations, etc. If you don't send it in (or get an extension) then you can't go to orientation. That way, the people who hold an acceptance, but aren't planning on attending are eliminated (it's not likely that they'll go to the time, effort, and expense to get that done if they don't plan to matriculate). So, even if no one else gives up a spot, some people will likely be accepted in the last two weeks of the month to fill those spots.

When did you get this call. I'm waitlisted there and haven't gotten one yet. I'm thinking this is a bad sign.

They called me about a week ago, last Wednesday I think. But they didn't send me any paperwork or anything. They just asked if I was still interested and said I was in the next 2 groups of people to be taken off the waitlist (which worries me because I think that means there's at least 10 ppl ahead of me). I'm trying to stay optimistic but I’m preparing to take the MCAT in August if I have to apply again. I have one other waitlist to an allopathic school but I don’t want to go there at all, I would take myself off their waitlist in a heartbeat if I was offered a spot at Lecom. I’m hoping people are holding on to many acceptances and will drop their spot so I can go! Keep your fingers crossed for me!

i wish i saw these posts earlier! i went by the school today and i spoke with ms. shively. i'm sure i wouldn't have been able to find out anything that you guys don't already know, but i could've tried :luck:

Congrats GG on getting a call. I definately think it's a good sign for you to have gotten a call.

For the rest of us who haven't gotten a call, sheeshe-- I think this is not so good... This is how I figured, Lala (and others) received a call from what is closes to the first group of 10, and apparently the next two groups of 10 have been contacted already. That's already ~30+ people that have been called 😱. I guess we will have to see... and I suppose preparing for the August MCAT is not too shabby of an idea either 🙄

I second that-- thanks for keeping us in mind 🙂

Doc G, had you been in regular contact with them since you were placed on the alternate list?

Well, check this out 😀... I can hardly contain myself, but I spoke to A.S. today and she said I am the next 2 groups as well!!! I didn't get a call, but I think after all the letters and phone calls I've sent, it was pretty clear that yeah, I'm still interested. She said the the group I'm in is not ranked yet, but when they get further down on the group ahead us of, we will get a call letting us know where we are in the list. She also said that they seem to be pulling a few more people from the waitlist then they did last year-- which is absolutely fab for us 👍

I am so crazy excited-- this is the best news I've heard since this whole process started!!! Hopefully the list will start moving and poppin'...

I've sent then so many extra letters and updates and called to check on my application so many times they must be sick of me by now. lol. But that's exactly what she told me also so we're in the same group! I didn't know that they were pulling more people than last year though. That's great news for us! Good luck to you!

Cmoooon spots 1 & 2!!! I hope the list starts moving soon, this waiting is something else. Are you holding a seat somewhere else?

Hopefully Shasta is in the next group, too :luck:

For what it's worth, I'll be withdrawing from the waitlist on Monday.

Thanks for the update tcamdg-- and congrats on your acceptance into our sister/mamma campus 😀 You'll still be a fellow LECOMer 🙂 Were u accepted off the waitlist or were you a shoe in?

Thank you, fabu1ous! I was taken off the waitlist after having some additional letters of recommendation sent in. (Be sure to waive access to your LoRs! Assuming you trust the writer, of course...)

I'll add your intentions to my prayers. Best of luck!

For those of you still waiting on the waitlist -- don't give up yet. There is still a month left...

Good luck to everyone and I hope to hear good news from each of you soon.

the deadline to have immunizations/background check/etc. in by is july 5th. i'm not sure if it's a hard and fast deadline, but as scpod said earlier, i'm sure anybody that's just holding an acceptance and not intending on matriculating won't take the time to fill out all of that info, so hopefully you'll hear soon after that date!!!
