LECOM - Bradenton Discussion thread 2008-2009

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Okay guys, I just recieved an invitation to complete the secondary, I logged on to the portal provided in the email with the username and password. I followed all the directions but I can't seem to locate the link that will initiate the secondary application. Under supplemental application, I can only print out the request forms for DO letter and committee letter but no link to start the application. I called the admission's office but got the answering machines at both schools. Can someone please help me with this?

My page has changed since I have completed the secondary. I remember having to poke around for the secondary though, it wasn't where I expected it. Look for another link, it's either underneath or next to the letters/forms link you are talking about. Sorry if that's not much help, just trying to remember exactly where it was. G'luck.

I just submitted my secondary and was wondering how long it too you all to find out about an interview after you submitted yours? Thanks...

Oh, GOOD LUCK WITH THE INTERVIEWS!

Hey everyone! I wanted to congratulate everyone who has gotten an interview thus far. It seems like the process is moving along well and you guys are on your way to becoming medical students. The process might seem frustrating, but do your best and don't panic about the interview, especially here are LECOM. It's very relaxing and, honestly, a lot of fun. Get some good sleep the night prior as you will have a long day during your interview.

As for the couple of PMs I've gotten, I'm going to TRY to get to them this weekend, possibly Friday night. Anatomy has taken up the bulk of my life at the moment, and any spare time that I may have is consumed by driving to and from school, going to actual class, trying to read for PBL and CE, and sleeping. Even when we all go out to get lunch or dinner I find myself talking Anatomy. It's a lot of work, but it definitely isn't impossible.

Regardless, I am working on finding some time for ME this weekend as our next test isn't for another week, so maybe a little SDN break would be good. If you have any questions, I'll do my best to answer them as I can. As for PBL based questions, I can't answer much as I've only had it twice thus far, but I will tell you that PBL definitely works and I am seeing it work first-hand.

Good luck to everyone!

I just wanted to second BCL's offer...especially since we're best friends and all 😉 (inside joke...sorry)

If you guys have any questions feel free to PM me, or ask 'em here...I'll try to answer as fast as I can. I'm in the same boat as BCL, with Anatomy (incl. Histo), PBL, OMM, and Clinical Exam...the days are rather full...but I'll do my best to help.

Questions about administration type problems we probably won't be much help on...other than just shrugging...

My response to all of those questions will likely be: "hmmm...I don't know...maybe try calling them and asking?"

Honestly though, the admissions staff are extremely nice and helpful...I wouldn't bother them too much, but if you have a legitimate question, try emailing them, or calling...

Congrats to all our future classmates!

A un-needed bump, posted in wrong area.

Does anyone know if LECOM-Erie allows re-scheduling interviews? I am highly interested in the school, but ironically LECOM-Erie scheduled me when I am traveling to LECOM-Bradenton.

I would imagine they will reschedule you...the two campuses seem to be much more separate than people think...

I would shoot Erie an email (or call) and ask. Can't hurt.

So, does anyone know the rough acceptance percentage from interview? All interviews are good, but anyone know what kind of percentage get accepted from interview? I'm stoked either way, but just curious.

I don't know any of the specifics, but I would say that they asked you to interview for a reason. They are not going to interview sub-par candidates simply to fill their interview ranks and slots. When you get to the interview remember to relax, be yourself, breath, and not worry. The interview (given you get the right people 🙂) will be relaxing and enjoyable (also given that you enjoy the school, people, facilities, etc). Don't get flustered and remember that they invited you there for an interview, so you must be a good candidate.

I probably won't get to see you all in our PBL rooms ('cause our classes are in the afternoon), but if you see any of us walking through the halls and recognize me (although I don't see how you would), wave at me. I'm the first year guy walking around talking his head off. At the very least you could wave at the wrong person and they'll wave back awkwardly, haha.

Good luck!

Just wear a penn state tie on Sept 19th and I'll figure it out.

I'm not worried by any means. Its just that some schools accept 15 to 20% of interviewees and others accept nearly 80%. My biggest advantage is the 4 years of PBL curriculum I have already had! I pretty much made a point to write about that on the secondary I believe....although I've done so many they all kind of blur together.

I'm not sure either, but everyone I talk to in our class got accepted after their interview...wait a minute....:slap:

I do know that it is much easier to get in this early in the cycle...so, as BCL said, just relax, be yourself, prepare using the SDN interview questions and you'll do fine.

Definitely try to seek us out. Depending on test schedules, we may or may not be available, but we'll try...esp for MossPoh.

Hey guys, does anyone know if LECOM will offer an interview even though some LORs still have not made it to their destination but everything else is good? Thanks for any advise.

It can depend a lot on the interviewees. 7 of 13 got invites from my interview date, and only 1 went elsewhere (although a couple were waitlistees for several months before acceptance), but that seems to be a bit higher than what most of my classmates have seen. Of course, there are a lot more interviewees now than there were then, and a lot more interview dates as well.

The average GPA and MCAT has increased considerably too, so they have the ability to look at your other features now. I know of several people with 28's who didn't even get interviews. If you got one, it means that you have the "stuff" on paper. Forget about everything else and just concentrate on the interview. You'll do fine.

Do you guys know if there is any difference in curriculum between LECOM-B and LECOM. On their website, for LECOM-B they only have PBL. Does that mean there is no other options. There is no LDP?

Thank you.

I'm almost 100% sure that that is correct. At Erie, there's like 3 or 4 different pathways. But at LECOM-B, PBL is the only choice. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

You are right...at LECOM-B there is ONLY PBL, period. Up in Erie at LECOM-E you have 4 different curricula pathways: LDP(the majority of the students there), PBL, Independent Study, and Primary Care Scholars Pathway...when you interview you rank those 1-4 and then are assigned to the pathway. LECOM-B has no choice...you either like PBL and you are there, or you don't. Hope that helps answer your Q!

Congrats guys on the interviews! I try to sneak around on here a good bit so if there are any questions feel free to ask... good luck!

MossPoh.... I think we need more FSU/Tally folks down here, not many here currently.

I second that. There are an awful lot of gators around.

I am a nittany lion stuck in nole land. I'm rather indifferent to the fsu/uf rivalry. 😉

You must be done with some exams. You are bulk posting today it seems!

.... not done, actually. Just kind of getting my last bit of posting done before our exams start. Our schedule looks like this for the next little bit.

September 10: Thorax/Abdomen Quiz
September 16: OPP Written Exam #1
September 18: OPP Lab Practical Exam #1
September 22: Anatomy Exam #3 (Thorax/Abdomen/Perineum)
September 26: PBL Exam #1
September 30: Clinical Examination Mid-semester Test
October 1: Head/Neck Quiz
October 13: Anatomy Exam #4 (Head/Neck) + Drinking (last day of Anatomy)
October 28: OPP Written Exam #2
October 30: OPP Lab Practical Exam #2
November 6: PBL Test #2

So basically........ I'm just doing my last minute "fun" before I vegetate and study for the rest of the semester. Keep posting, though, so we can do something in our free time and talk with you guys. Trust me, we talk about SDN (my group of friends) whenever something comes up.

Good luck with interviews!

I'm still honored to be quoted in a signature.

I'll be seeing you guys in a couple weeks. I'll be there on Friday the 19th.

Congrats! PM me and BCL and we can all make plans to meet up sometime. You coming in on Thursday?

Thursday night sometime probably. I have class at 12 and 5 p.m. I'm undecided whether I'll do a night drive or just leave early and get there. My aim is the same as my SN on here if you have free time. I tend to forget to PM or answer them since I have popup blockers on.

I tend to play it safe so I would probably recommend Thursday night. I guess if you left early enough Friday morning you could beat the Tampa morning traffic but I would stressed out just thinking about trying to avoid traffic and any wrecks on the way down.

Was just up in that area for the FSU game yesterday.....even with the freakin' 2.5 hours of weather delay it was fun, missed that atmosphere.

But if you have any last minute questions or need anything last minute while you're down here feel free to ask!

MossPoh. I sent you an IM. If you'd like to hang out, Thursday night might be your best bet. We have an Anatomy Exam on that following Monday, so Friday night will be littered with studying and reviewing. If you'd like, you'd be more than welcome to join us, although it'd probably be really annoying for you.. but then again, maybe not. That Thursday we are going to have an OMM Lab exam. I know that I have a lot of stress that I'd like to get rid of, so maybe we could head to a local bar near the school (Linkster's for anyone who is currently a student) and grab a drink. We could just chat it up for a bit and then have you on your way a bit early to get ready for the interview.

I'm not regularly on AIM anymore, but I'll try to be on here and there in the evenings. Just send me an IM and we can chat for a few. Good luck again and let me know if there's anything else you need!

EDIT: This goes for anyone else as well. If you'd like to chat, just send me a PM and I'll hook you up with my AIM name! Good luck to everyone!

I am booked for Thursday night at the hotel they recommend. Hampton Inn or whatever it is. Always up for a pint or 3. Start name dropping how awesome I am now. You know, gotta prime them a bit.

Driving up from miami on tuesday. Do people actually call this school FLECOM (I read it on an old thread)? Anyone for some cow tipping on Wedesday???😀

I have heard of the FLECOM thing before, but not here.

The faculty call it "LECOM BRADENTON". We call it LECOM-B.

There aren't so many cows left anymore. There used to be a field across from the school, but it is currently under massive development.

I've heard people say that the school is in the middle of nowhere, but its really not. Lakewood Ranch is an awesome neighborhood with tons of food, shopping, etc at its south end. The school happens to be at the north end, so people get the impression that there is nothing there.

It's certainly not Miami though.

If someone thinks this school is in the middle of nowhere, they really haven't explored. As digitlnoize said, the area immediately around the school is undergoing massive development. If you go on Lakewood Ranch Blvd and head south to SR 70, development. Take that road West towards Bradenton. There are a ton of things to do all over... and tons of clubs. And if you're ever bored and need somewhere to go, there's always either Siesta Key (one of the best beaches in the world) or Tampa.

Nice place, IMO.

Clubs: I like 'em, particularly in downtown Sarasota (about 15-20 min from my house). I'm sure Tampa has more but I haven't been that far yet.

Siesta Key is the best beach ever. EVER. And that includes South Beach.

Not that any of this matters anyway...observe:

Number of times I have:

been to the beach since I moved here: 2
been to the beach since school began: 1
swam in my pool since school began: 3
been out to a club since school began: 2
been immersed in my anatomy book: 5000
been elbow deep in another dead body: 500
had my fingers in someone else's heart: 25

I think you get the idea...sigh...

...I lol'd IRL.

I've never been to the beach during the day since I've been here. Anyone worried about that distraction, the answer is simple: it depends on how much studying you're willing to do. I never stop, so.. yeah.

Have fun!

I guess I should clarify my beach experience.

I went once before school started.

I went once after school started with my flashcards. I studied flashcards on the beach for about 5 hours.

Hey guys! Just to let everyone who is interviewing on SEPTEMBER19th know, I (and maybe some other people, too) will be heading out to meet you all at Linkster's Pub at around 930 PM. I don't want to be out too alte so you all can get some sleep and so I can be well rested for studying the next day. I know I've talked to two of you through IMs/PMs, so if there's anything else you guys need regarding directions and whatnot, post here and I'll get back to you ASAP.

Also, I gave you guys my number (I'm Stephen, btw), so call me if you get lost or whatnot.

I'm down for a drink and just some time for you guys to ask questions about whatever you want. I'm probably not the expert, but talking with a first year then and a 2nd year the day after would probably give you the best perspective.

This offer is also extended for all future interviewers, provided there is no impedning examination of doom the next day or thereabouts (unless it was that day, in which case I'd love to fry my brain with a few Yuenglings).

Good luck to you all in all of your interviews!!

😕 S😕ept 19th??? That's so awesome of you. Hope one day i can get an interview and meet you too.

How long did it take for everyone's signed page to get to NOVA? Two weeks and still no update?? I wonder if they got my interfolio? That was sent two weeks ago also. Where do they update that?

I was wondering about the May 19th thing too...I don't think anyone will be interviewing by then...I mean, classes start on May 20th 😉 (that was a crack on LECOM-B starting classes so friggin' early...we started July 28th this year).

I'll probably be at Linkster's as well...along with much of the rest of "the gang." Don't be afraid, we're all nice, cool, awesome, humble people.

Re: NOVA. I have no idea. I did apply there, and I got an interview invite pretty early on, but I don't remember their "process" really. I would just give them a call if you're worried about it. Or, you can email first, if you're only kind of worried about it.

Good luck!

Ooops! I did say May, didn't I. I edited the original post. Sorry for the confusion. I guess now I cannot tell my months apart. *sigh* Too much medical school..

I'm in the Holiday Inn in Sarasota like 10 min from the school, getting ready for tommorrow's interview. I'm excited and surprisingly not nervous at all. LECOM has quickly become one of my top choices, and driving up from Miami has been a fun and interesting experience. Never been on the same road for 200 miles before.

Hey, good luck tomorrow! Remember your osteopathic principles, have fun and be yourself. This school has really been great so far, even with anatomy!Really, ask honest questions in your interviews and enjoy the PBL session!

Also, it's a long day so wear comfortable shoes!

Bradenton will complete my tour of florida. All of my driving and flights have covered the length and width of florida a few times. I had a flight cancelled in miami today and got to fly to tampa before going back to tallahassee. I was in Ft. Lauderdale last week and Bradenton on Thursday.

Good luck on your interview tomorrow! Just remember to do one thing: RELAX! It's an awesome school and if you have any questions, as Kate said, just give us a PM or hit up some of the students in the hall. We're all really helpful!

I'll see you guys Thursday night probably. I'm eager to check out the place. Not so eager to miss more class, but I'll survive.

Wow, for those of you that interviewed today, that was a huge interview group! Hope it went well.

Yeah I was there and it was huge. Now I need to get a damn DO letter magically by tuesday so I don't get put on hold. LECOM is really cool and I have never been to sarasota before it's so beautiful and everyone is so friendly, unlike in Miami lol. And LECOM has some pretty hott girls there, which is always a plus.

It is important to understand that south florida is not the rest of florida. The rest of Florida isn't that bad with some nice people. South Florida has a disproportionally large amount of con artists, super oldies, new yorkers, and the worst of all....french canadians.

I'll probably stand out on Friday. I'll be one of the biggest and goofiest looking bastards there.

We need a few of those in each class, I'll make sure to keep an eye out for you!

Got a voicemail yesterday with an interview invite! I have to call tomorrow and schedule it. I probably won't be able to til end of october or beginning of november because of other interviews, but by then it will be colder in MI and should be a nice break! =) Hopfully i'll meet some people then! =)

Linkster's. Tonight. 9:30PM. A drink to chat. Good luck.

I am interviewing on October 1st!!!! Any one else??
Any post-interview get togethers then?!
