I was looking into getting a Gateway Convertible Tablet/Laptop, mainly because I like taking notes by hand over typing. Anybody have one and can tell me the pros and cons? Or can you recommend something else? I have a laptop, but its from my senior year of high school, so now its over 7 years old! 😳

I would say about 80% of students do their rotations away from Erie. If you have the affiliate list and want to do your rotations from that list you just let the clinical ed dept know by the online rotation approval form and put in that hospital for the rotation slot depending on which group you are in. If you want to do your own rotations outside of the affiliates then it is up to you to see if that hospital (say Las Vegas) will take you, you do the paperwork and get it approved on the other end. Once they have told you yes and you have paid your fee, etc to them. Then you do the online rotation approval form and go to your rotation, wherever it may be. If you do a rotation outside of the affiliate list it is up to you to find your own housing and get yourself there. I have done rotations all over the country so if anyone wants to PM me feel free. If you feel you are planning on trying to get an allopathic residency as a DO then it is wise to do a rotation at that hospital site and be seen. Plus you must be very organized, most rotations are schedule 10 - 12 months in advance. I tried to get rotations in California 10 months ahead and they were already filled. The way the rotation groups are set up, the entire class is divided into 13 rotation groups, each group has approx 17 students. Within that group there are usually 4 Erie people, 4 Ohio, 4 Michigan, 2 Pittsburgh, 2 Eastern PA, and 2 floaters. So, for instance, the Erie people have first dibs on the hospitals in Erie and once they decide for that rotation slot then its open to the rest of the group. Everyone takes turns to get that dream rotation they want since there are certain afflilate hospitals that MUST be filled by a LECOM student for every rotation. ONce those are filled then the others in the group are free to pick in another area or go somewhere else in the country. (I hope that's not too confusing) I think it's changed a little bit since I set up rotations. Anyhow, it's easy, don't stress about it. PM me if others have questions.

Anyone has any info regarding seating chart? My last name starts with a "T" so I guess I'll be sitting a mile away . Is it possible to change seats due to hearing or sight difficulties? I assume since it's a huge lecture hall the professor will use a microphone? Thanks.

The first week or so you will need to sit alphabetical because all three pathways start lecture together. "A" sits in the front cornet by the podium and then it winds row by row. T's usually are on the second tier (about the 12th row). Remember that the screen is something like 30 feet high and you can always plug in your laptop at your seat and follow the lecture that way to type notes as they talk. And, yes, the room is wired so the volume is the same wherever you seat. If you want to change seats, you can switch with someone down front and put in the paperwork so they know where you are when attendance is taken. Not to worry.

Where can i find info on which hospitals in a specific city (like nyc or Chicago or Philly) takes incoming students for rotations?? Would I have to ask other students about this or would LECOM have that info??? I'm trying to avoid moving around so much for rotations. I want to do most/all rotations in the same area.

Just go to LECOM's site...then clinical ed...then rotation sites. I think there might be some locations missing, but I'm not 100% positive.

Our class didn't seem to have too many people who wanted Ohio. I ended up getting lucky as the only Ohio person in my group!

That's what I have heard- but how about quality rotations (i.e. not Milcreek hospital rotations)?

Yeah there is Hamot which has great rotations and there is St. Vincents too. This is just what I've heard from my classmates. They seemed to have very good experiences at Hamot and it's a trauma center.

I did almost all of my third year rotations at Millcreek. It's not that bad and you get to do as much or as little as you want. I have had both good and bad at St Vincent and Hamot. It's really the luck of the draw I think. I also did many of my rotations at the various clinics in Erie which gives you great opportunity to learn a lot since you are usually the only student. IF you want to stay in Erie, its super super easy. Not to worry. I had to stay in Erie for most of mine since I have small children in school and I wanted to be home in the evening. Also, having rotations in Erie - NO CALL and the latest I was ever home was 5:30pm. Most rotations I was home by 3, which is great when you just doing a required rotation and are just putting in your time.

So I just got my laptop today and I realized that I ordered the wrong edition of microsoft office. I got the basic edition and it doesnt have powerpoint. We need powerpoint don't we? Is there any way I can just buy powerpoint or do I have to buy the whole thing? I'd appreciate any help you can give. I am such a ***** when it comes to computers.

A) I enjoy my MS program too much.
B) Having a MS in counseling may help me get a better psychiatry residency.



In regards to the homework assignment, I would like to see if they have retired it for the c/o 2010.

LECOM requires that you have some form of health insurance whether it be your own policy, your parents, or your spouse. If you have your own you have to provide a copy of your current card and fill out the waiver. If you don't have your own then you have to buy their policy. I know the coverage isn't that great but its better than nothing. I have heard horror stories about pregnancy not being covered and I recall from a lecture I went to the max lifetime payout is like $150,000. Now if you get injured and end up in ICU, that only covers about 10 days of care. It's a bad policy. However, if anyone approaches you about the SOMA policy - it is worse. The company comes up with any excuse to deny claims. I had it for one semester and changed quickly when my claims were denied for $1000's and I had to get a lawyer to eventually get it paid.

Bottom line: If you can maintain your own insurance. DO IT

We are required to use the plan provided by LECOM (Blue Cross/Blue Shield PPO Blue). The only other options are if you are covered by a parent, spouse, or military. However, we just received a notice that our plan would be improved for the coming year (slightly more expensive, of course...its $160/mo.).

Go with PNC bank...They are everywhere in Erie and there's an PNC ATM at school. Also the loan money from the school is or used to be a PNC check. That means no waiting for the check to clear since it will be a PNC to PNC transaction. Plus they have a student account with no fees.

I work for Advocate Lutheran General now (in the E.R.) and it is an awesome hospital, it would be nice to come back here for rotations.

That is a list of places that LECOM students are rotating in. If they let one student rotate they have to let others from the same school rotate if there's room. So yes, those are considered affiliated hospitals. IMO.

EDIT: Ooops! I was confused. Matchlist is for residencies only. Of course, if you do your rotation at a particular hospital you have a good chance if you apply for their residency program.

The above list is the (almost complete) match list for the class of 2006, I found it on our server. That does not mean they are all affilliates of Lecom, though as a fourth year student, you can rotate at almost all residency programs providing your schedules match. This is sometimes difficult b/c we have a strict month to month schedule.

Anyone in Erie already that would know about how long it would take to drive from Fairview to LECOM or Erie in general?? There is a house there my wife and I are thinking about, how inconvenient would this be? She will be attending nursing school at Gannon as well. Is there a bus system at all? Thanks for any info on this!
