Anyone in Erie already that would know about how long it would take to drive from Fairview to LECOM or Erie in general?? There is a house there my wife and I are thinking about, how inconvenient would this be? She will be attending nursing school at Gannon as well. Is there a bus system at all? Thanks for any info on this!

From Fairview to LECOM is minimum 30 minute drive. That in itself is not that bad in the summer but you have to remember that Erie has blizzards and the weather is no excuse to miss class at LECOM. No Kidding!! It would be miserable in the winter for the both of you expeically when the weather is bad. Yes, there is a bus system in Erie but I have no idea if there is a bus to fairview? Doubt it. I would try to live closer. My house is 7 minutes to LECOM and during the winter when the weather is bad, its very dangerous and sometime I wish I lived closer.

Anyone know of any hospitals in nyc where i can rotate in???
Just do a google search for NYC hospitals. Email their education depts and see if they will take a visiting student. That's how you find out. Easy.

Anyone have any thoughts on Brookwood village? Anyone live there, or checked it out? I'm from Oregon, so I can't go on a tour so any help would be appreciated!

I checked Brookwood out back in January. They were really nice compared to some of the other places I looked at. Plus they accept pets, which is a bonus for me. I looked at them fairly early in the morning and there were a ton of little kids getting waiting for the bus. Might be a good thing if you have kids of your own. The landlord told me that there are alot of students there - Penn State-Behrend, Mercyhurst, and LECOM - which could or could not be a good thing depending on how loud parties get! 😎

As for me, my girlfriend and I are living right next door to Brookwood at a place called Belle Village. They just built a few new townhouses that are ready to be rented. They accept pets too! The landlord, Julie, is very nice and will work with you on your lease. Let me know if you have any more questions that I might be able to answer.

Does belle village accept Dogs and cats, or just cats? My wife and I want to get a dog! Thanks!

Hey did anyone hear about the three year program LECOM is starting in 2007? Its geared towards family practice. Sounds cool but kind of sucks that we will be graduating the same time as someone who started a year later than us. 😕 There is an article on it on goerie.com

Yeah. I was actually in Erie today and I looked at a newspaper and on the cover was the story. I was also thinking that it kind of sucks that the first class will graduate the same time as us.

Will those students be forced to go into family practice? I don't see how that's possible as one can choose to change specialty afterwards, can they not?

The newpaper article says that only 6 people will be accepted into the 3 year program. It's year round with no breaks like the pharm program. I am sure that LECOM will monitor the match progress of those six and will not issue a diploma if those students don't match in FP. They will find a way to force those in the accelerated program to stay with that track. You would probably have to sign a binding contract at the start of the program and would be sued for breech on contract should you want out. I would not put it past the school. I would not even go into it thinking a switch would be possible later. No worth it. Do the extra year if you are not sure.

Just curious. I wouldn't want to attend school year round. But can't a current practicing family physician go back and do residency in another specialty if they don't want to do family medicine anymore?

Yes. That is another loophole.

I commend LECOM for trying to proactively deal with the shortage of FPs. However, even if they force you to do a FP residency, they cannot follow you around for the rest of your life to make sure you are still a FP. So, I guess like if you wanted to be a cardiologist, you could do a IM residency and then do a cardio fellowship in this program, technically.

I think perhaps a better approach would be some type of guaranteed FP residency program. For instance, they may have FP residencies from around the country agree to guarantee a spot for graudates of a "FP track" program, that is still the typical 4 year DO program. This way, you would be guaranteed that 95% of the applicants for that program would really want to go into FP.

From what I've heard, you only get 1 funded residency spot. So if you would want to do a 2nd residency, you wouldn't get $$. Now if you wanted a surgery residency initially, you get funded for 4 years. If you decide that you don't like that and want to switch to a 3 year FP residency you can because you were "funded" for 4 years.

This is just what I've heard...

What's the difference with the BS/MD 6 year programs? THey are completing their undergrad in <2 years...

I was thinkin about driving 2800 miles to get a picture, and decided to wait until July... lol! I'm not going to be able to go until a couple weeks before school starts, i'm not sure if other people have gone?

Can't we just get the id thing done during orientation?

I did since I was looking for the apartment up there anyways, but they dont actually give it to you, just take a picture and will give you id and the parking pass during orientation, so I think it can wait. Also, they send you to configure your laptop, but all they did for me was they wrote down serial number and checked if there was antivirus installed - not much configuring, took about 5 minutes 😎 🙂

The letter that they sent said to make an appt, so I did. But they didnt look very busy when I was there 🙂

I have an appointment for June 12 so I figured I would look at appartments or houses that weekend. Man did the price of hotels go up during the summer months. 😱

Those were my exact MCAT stats!

I love LECOM so much, I was so shocked because at first I wasn't even going to go there, but Erie and the school are so awesome I can't wait to be up there next August.

So I am currently a 5th year senior at Western State College in Gunnison, Colorado. I will graduate in May with a B.A. in Biology-Cell and Molecular and a minor in Chemistry and Business. I love skiing and anything outdoors. I truely do enjoy the D.O. philosophy. Lets keep the thread going. 😀

glad to hear there's some other married/ attached folks who have outgrown the bar scene...maybe we can have a couples get-together for semi-non-trads!!!

I will be living with my fiance in Erie. We have never been the hardcore party types. Maybe we can all get together some time!

My fiance and I are looking into apartment places...specifically Vineyard Village, West Lake Townhomes, and Carriage Hill Townhouses because everything else seems pretty booked. Any thoughts??? 🙂 Has anyone just recently gotten an apartment and where did you find that there were available apartments for the middle of July? Thanks and I can't wait to meet everyone!

My wife and I are living in Brookwood village next year. It is VERY nice, allows a dog (just in case), washer/dryer hookups, dishwashing, soundproof walls, etc. etc. They were available for middle of July and we put down our downpayment. You should look into them!

Yes we are also looking into Brookwood Village...thanks for the advice. I am crossing my fingers to get something nice. 🙂

When I was up there a couple weeks ago, I looked at Willow Wood Village and they seemed to have a lot of townhouses available in the middle of July. They're pretty nice and affordable. Some have garages and others just have basements. Also, I looked at Lakeview and thats where I will be living but they did have a few apartments available at their Scenery Hills location available on July 1st.

Anyone know when we take the COMLEX I/ USMLE I ??? I know it's after second year, but are there a range of dates or is it only offered once? My sister in law is getting married the summer between my second and third year and they live out of the country, so I'm just trying to see if I'll be able to make it. Thanks!

A few things...
1. You haven't even started therefore don't be thinking about boards already
2. Yes, there are multiple dates it can be taken
3. The MS2s had only 2-3 weeks off between classes and the first day of rotations.

Bump!

I'd also like to know if we will need to do this assignment. When will we find out about it if we do have to do it?

I was snooping around the class of '09 thread and the earliest date that anyone mentioned it was June 22 of last year. So I'm guessing that if we don't hear anything about it in a few weeks then we should be ok. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we don't have to do it.

Hi! Planning on attending LECOM this year. New to the forums, in case no one noticed. Does anyone know if you can change your preferences for learning pathway? I orginally put PBL>LDP>ISP, but now I want ISP. I was going to call them this week and ask, but I figured I'd see if anyone knew something first.

Thanks and hello to all my future classmates! 🙂

Yeah for fellow ISPers!!

I hear ISP is the hardest to switch in to and holds a waiting list. But I would call tomorrow just to see. I would imagine that at this point in the game it will be difficult, but mabe there will be some people switching around during the first semster.

I think I could do well in any of the pathways, its just preference now. I'm in LDP at the moment. I figured the worst they can tell me is that ISP and PBL are still full. Thanks!

Good thinking! I will keep my fingers crossed, too! But I have a feeling we will probably have to do it. 🙁 I hate physics...but I am sure knowing it will help for physiology and such.

Don't you think they would have told you by now if they wanted you to do it and maybe even updated it? The one on the site is only dated 2005.

How did you find it on the website? It doesn't look like other aspects of the website, such as the MS1 schedule, have been updated yet.

Hey, I'm not sure about the process of changing pathways, but I was wondering that myself. I'm currently enrolled in the ISP pathway, but want to switch to LDP...so if it's full, I do intend to drop my spot in ISP as soon as I'm able...

Why would you want to switch from ISP?

However, I have heard that it's easy to switch into LDP.

I talked to Cinda earlier today and she said that if you want to change that you need to put it in writing. Emailing Elaine Morse is fine. ISP and PBL are full at the moment, but I think that there's not really any problems to switch into LDP. I guess I see that one as the default pathway anyway, since it is the largest one.

I'm enrolled in the ISP program which I feel is best for me because it enables you to work on your own without being forced to stay in class.

Most med students prefer not to go to class because it is often more efficient time management to study your notes. The LDP Program at LECOM requires that you be in class every day, which limits your study time.

If you are the kind of person that is self motivated and very disciplined, I would stay in the ISP Program.

By the way, do you need a roomate? I would prefer rooming with another ISP or LDP student.

If anyone is still looking for a place to live, this older couple who are renting two large bedrooms both with private baths still have one bedroom to rent (at least the last time I talked to them they were). I am renting the other one for $400/mth, no utilities, with all appliances. Just send me a private IM and I can give you more details if interested and a number to call.

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice. I am currently on the waiting list for starting in the fall and i have not received any news regarding my status. I have sent in several interest letters, a rec from a DO doctor, updated transcript, and an additional prof letter to add to my file. How can we find out our status? Has anyone been accepted off the current waiting list? And if so, could you tell me what your stats are so I could get a good idea if I should start reapplying for next year? Thanks!

Also, is it okay to email Elaine Morse and ask about my status or ask her about my chances of being accepted this summer?

Not related to your question but I recommend submitting your re-application now just in case things don't work out. That way you're not going to be behind other applicants.

Does anyone know of any place that open 24/7 that students can study at since LECOM closes at 11PM? Also, LECOM's lecture are on MP3 for download from the web right? Thanks.

You should call every week to check on your status. You can definitely e-mail Elaine Morse too and she will respond. They may not tell you anything but keep trying...it worked for me. I was on the wait list back in May. I called every week for a couple of months and finally on May 16 they told me I was on the wait list...and in the top ten of the list. Elaine Morse told me to hold tight and that I had a very good chance of getting in. Then I received a phone call on May 22 and I was accepted! My stats are GPA - 3.85 and MCAT - 25. Good luck!

I've actually never been so excited or nervous about anything in my life! I'm sure the excitement and nervousness will be replaced by agony and exhaustion a few weeks in but hey, I'll enjoy the excited anticipation while it lasts 😉

I've also lead a pretty sheltered life I think, I've never actually lived more than 60 miles from my parents and I'm kind of a mommy's and daddy's girl so living two states over will be just one of many tests of independence I guess!

I feel the exact same way!! I'm really excited to start but I'm nervous because I have no idea what to expect. For me it's worse than going to college because I at least knew a few people but this time I don't know anyone. I too have lead a sheltered life and will still lead a sheltered life because I am only moving 3 hours away from my family so we'll see how my test of independence goes. 🙂

Thanks for the reply DnB607. I was under the impression that Admissions does not want to be "bugged" so I stayed away from calling them so often. However, I have continuously sent in interest letters. I will email Elaine Morse today and see what she says. Thanks again!

You're welcome, Docmon. 🙂 Keep up with e-mails and phone calls...it doesn't matter if you bug them. lol Half the time they don't even ask for your name when you call. Good luck!

So...my fiance and I just got an apartment in Vineyard Village. Anyone else living there? When are you all moving in? I will be heading up there on July 21. I am looking forward to meeting everyone!
