Hi everyone! I just moved to Erie last week & so far I love it! I'm living downtown & it seems like there is always something going on. Can't wait to meet everyone!
*Meg*

Hi Meg, I guess I'll be meeting you in what, 11 days? I had a question about where you are living. Is it an apartment complex or what? How far to LECOM? How is the set-up? Rent decent?

Jeremy

Hey guys...just thought I'd throw it out there that I'm going to be going to the Erie Seawolves game tomorrow night (with a friend from home), so if anyone already in Erie wants to go, maybe we could all meet up...& it's Buck night! Let me know!
*Meg*

P.S. Jeremy-I pm'ed you some info about apartment stuff

So if we don't have family coming to the open house, do we have to go? Just wondering. I'll be moving in this weekend 🙁 I can't believe how fast this summer has gone.

Did anyone else get a tuition bill? It was sent to my parents so I don't know exactly what it says--I'm assuming financial aid covers it and it's just a formality??????? Anyone know how the financial aid works? Do they send LECOM a check and then LECOM gives us a check for the difference? Is it per semester? Also, I still haven't gotten the online orientation info yet--anyone else?

I received the tuition bill as well. I'm not sure how it works. With regards to the orientation packet, I haven't received it either. The only thing I have received in the mail is the class of 2009 profile packet. I called the admissions office and they told me that orientation packets had not been sent out yet. However, it seems many people on this board have already received them, but some, like me, have not. I'm not sure what to make of this. In any event, I'll be moving to the area this coming Monday so I hope it arrives before then.

Wow thats weird,I received it back on July5th together with the class of 2009 profile packet. Im sure you will get it soon. 🙂

Hey here's how the tuition bill works...if you have already filled out your financial aid, you are fine. You should see a charge and then a -$21.000 or something on there. If you want to figure out how much $$ you'll get subtract the two. If it doesn't say (-) something, then just be patient as long as you filled out everything.

OK, question-- how do we get to the online security quiz thingy we have to do? I lost a bag with all my mail from LECOM so I don't remember!

ANother thing-- does anyone else feel crazy scared and nervous that they won't be able to cut it and like flunk out? How often does that actually happen?

Everyone has that anxiety... some more then others... but all in all it is unfounded... don't get me wrong, people will, and do flunk out... but it is few and far between...

As for the security quiz... well, I don't have a good answer for that one... My class (Bradenton 09') didn't have to do a quiz online, but we did have to have a background check done... Hope that helps clear things up for you....

Hi Scarlett, the orientation course was at LECOM.edu/orientation.

What do you have to be nervous about? I'm probably going to be one of the older ones in the class, have been away from school for several years and now am jumping back into it. Don't worry, we'll all get through this together.

The tuition bill is a formality. Your parents will need it if they still claim you on their taxes. LECOM cuts you a check for the difference after the funds are received by the school. You get a check at the end of August and a check at the end of January. That's it so budget wisely.

OK everybody, I'm screwed! Why does school have to start so early? I got admitted in early Feb., but because of a mailing mixup and nobody at LECOM giving me any answers in my numerous calls or emails, I didn't actually get an admittance letter til June. So I hurry up, do all the BS and paperwork and all they make you do, find an apartment (all this after begging them to still let me have my spot since they thought I had turned them down by now accepting it months ago). And now the apartment people at Royal Villa are jerking me around and not telling me when I can move in, even thought they pretty much assured me I would be able to move in at least a week before my lease starts 8/1. Grrr... I still have to be there sometime this coming week to do that ID/computer junk, then be there 7/29 or 7/30 to pick it up, then of course orientation starts right after that. When am I going to move? Do I have to stay in a hotel for a few days and spend more of the $$ I don't have? Just worked my last night at my job, my boyfriend is anxious to move (he's coming with me, yay!). My cat who is 19 and who I have had since I was 3 yrs old is dying. My boyfriend has been out of work for a few months, so we only have whatever money I have managed to scrape together. Neither of our parents are really in the position to help much (which I wouldn't expect anyhow) I am stressed! Sorry, just had to do some venting, hopefully to people who can understand, since they may be in a similar situation ?!?!? Haha. Oh, and today is my boyfriend's 25th birthday, and it's my 22nd birthday monday, but we don't have too much extra cash to be spending on each other... yeah, boohoo... I know...
All I can say is welcome to your journey to medical school. It does not ever get any better. I would not worry about the computer thing. You can do that anytime. It only takes them 5 minutes to configure your system. I would not even worry about that until you get settled.

If you have any other issues just PM me since I pretty much know all the tricks of that place.

Usually there are 2-5 students each year who flunk out or drop out. LECOM is one of those schools who really tries to keep all its students. It's really really hard to flunk out. You have to try to fail.

I'm not nervous at all.

That's because I'm a liar. 😀
I've constantly thought about it and it scares me :scared: . I mean who isn't? With the kind of debt we'll be having we better make it or else it would be hell trying to pay off our debt and still have enough money to save face and be able to show up for our high school reunion.

Let me tell you how much fun a bunch of the LECOM class of 2010 had when we went out last night...well, its really too much to go into it all here, but let's just leave it at we had a lot of fun. We tried to do the Erie bar tour, but realized that we are more like nursing home residents then the party animals that we had hoped we could still be.
Now, the big question is, if you are part of the LECOM 2010 class, then why haven't you joined us in one of our many outings yet? We have quite the little phone chain going on. We even have a myspace group at http://groups.myspace.com/LECOM where we plan some of these awesome outings. Feel free to PM me or check out myspace if you wish to join in on the fun.

This post was brought to you by the mini van that trucked us all around last night.

Hungry...

Bertrand's: They claim to be French but I suspect that they are really Quebecois; and what, praytel, is worse than a Frenchman that is really Canadian. That said, good food (decent wine list too), obsequious service and my favorite restaurant in Erie so far.

Oscar's Pub & Restaurant: Good pub food and the best beer selection I've seen so far in Erie.

Zodiac Dinor (that's how they spell ‘Diner’ in Western PA...evidentially): REEEgardless, good coffee (sugar in the pour bottles that allows unfettered, instant access to its magical goodness), good breakfasts and good sandwiches. Good diners are essential to life!

Word on the street is that Pufferbelly is good too but I have yet to go there. I read that Papermoon was popular (on the profile of the class of 2009 thingy) but one look at the P-Diddy livin’-large/ playaz ball prices on the menu had me hightailing it out of there. Somebody needs to explain to them that one of the main attractions of Thai food is that the prices are reasonable, jeez!

Wegmann’s: Before moving here I checked on the Whole Foods website for their nearest location, which, alas, was Pittsburgh. After much sobbing (not your everyday sobbing, the kind where your face contorts into a shape that makes others think your head is imploding upon itself) my friends convinced me that life would indeed still go on. Whadya know, they were right.

Thirsty…

The Brick House: Cool coffee shop on 26th St. not outrageously far from school. What can I say, I have a weakness for cute barista girls; why am I shouting, this is a computer.

I’m still looking for a good place to buy beer (Ommegang, Sierra Nevada, Dogfish Head, Chimay, etc.) and wine. So, any nudges in the right directions would be appreciated. Looking forward to starting school, it’s been a long time coming. See y’all soon.

If you love mexican and don't mind smelling like one, hit up ElCanelo. It's a cheap hole in the wall, but it's great! There's one on peach and one on 12th. Warning...wear clothes that you get from the dirty clothes hamper, because you will stink to high heaven.

Wegmens is the great to study and they have the best subs around.

BW3 is great for wings.

PA is weird with beer and liquor. You have to buy beer at the beer store and liquor at the liquor store. Here in Ohio we get them both at the grocery store. ODD....

Odd, indeed. I have it on good notice that El Canelo is a great place to go if you want diarrhea. Why do you think all the Mexicans are fleeing Mexico...it's the food. Actually, I dig Mexican food but this Gringo thinks that Erie, PA ain't the hottest spot for it (pun intended). In any event, merci buckets.

-Jimmy

Are you kidding me....

Hey I wasn't so keen on ElCanelo until I went there...and that was during my MS2 year. You HAVE to go there at least once!

During the search for a place to live today, I hit the Pufferbelly. Excellent food and at a reasonable price. 6.95 for a sandwich, and they had a pretty decent beer selection.

Just think, only 6 days until openhouse/orientation.

Has anyone gotten an orientation schedule yet? They said they were sending one and it's only a few days away now....hmmmmm.

Also, for the open house, are we required to be there at 9am or do we just go anytime between 9-12?

I haven't bought anything for school yet because I have no idea what to get--notebooks? folders? pads of paper? I guess we'll find out!

does anyone know how diverse our class for 2010 is going to be? in terms of geographic location, age, and ethnicity?? just curious 🙂

What is going on Saturday from 1230-5?

Just some open house tour, dog and pony show kinda stuff. "see my vest, see my vest, seeeeeeee my vest"

Okay...so I got my bill from LECOM. I'm not doing loans this year (GOD, I hope I have enough money...), so I actually have to pay them. Here's the problem: there are two different amounts on the bill - one that I think is correct and that reflects the $1500 I already paid them under "Term Balance"...but then the "Balance Due" box says the full amount (not counting the $1500) is due. So, what to do? I vote I pay the lesser amount and see what they say....or I could call them, but where's the fun in that?

So i am finally all settled in and am ready to start school. is everyone going to be at the open house? Looking forward to meeting everyone!!!! Can't wait!

Just got accepted today. Looking forward to meeting you guys. See you on the 29th.

I thought the open house was 9-12??? Has anyone gotten a schedule for orientation?

The "LECOM Med student orientation conference" schedule states the following:

Open house is Saturday, July 29th from 12:30-5:15.

To accommodate the large number of anticipated guests, we have divided the Class of 2010 into three groups with specific times for attending Open House. Please follow the schedule listed below:

12:30 PM Last name begins A-I
1:30 PM Last name begins J-Q
2:30 PM Last name begins R-Z

But really, it's all about Sunday, when we going bowling in Erie, PA wearing business casual. Oh....yeah....

Do you guys think it's okay to bring my boyfriend bowling...? I mean, he's coming to the rest of orientation with me....and he drove 8 hours to be with me...I think I'm going to bring him anyways. Anyone else doing the same thing? Margaret, maybe?

If you are going to the open house you need to go to the security thing in the morning on saturday to pick up you id and parking permit stuff. If your last name is A-L, the you go from 8:30-10:30. If your last name is M-Z, then you go from 10:30-12:30. Hope that helps.

thanks for the update...turns out they never sent me the orientation packet--I just picked it up today.

everything for the weekend is optional, so does class start monday or what?

and, the bowling on sunday is at rolling meadows, right? that place is byob, but this is a school function and all sooo....pocket rocket??

i'm guessing we'll be closely watched for "unprofessional behavior", seeing how they own the bowling alley and all.

Is anyone going to the open house tomorrow by themselves? Just wondering.

Hey everybody! Just moved in yesterday, still need some furniture and stuff, but its all good. I just had an idea that maybe I really don't want to go to the open house today (but my mom drove in for it, she wants to go), and I also don't really want to go to bowling tomorrow. Don't get me wrong, I really want to meet everyone, but I just got into Erie and just want to chill for a minute. So if anybody wants to hang out and do something sunday, instead of or after bowling and whatnot-- let me know! I was thinking about swimming and grilling some food or something, either here at the apartment, or maybe presque isle.

That sounds fun! Where are you living? I'm not going to the open house today because my mom isn't up here to go with me but I will probably be doing the bowling thing tomorrow. 🙂

Royal Villa, the pool here is pretty decent, not huge but at least there's a deep end and its nice. Anybody else in royal villa-- say hi! I am in 2656 1A.

Hey neighbor, actually soon to be neighbor. I am roomming with another guy there but our apartment will not be ready until the first of August, Tuesday. It will be hectic trying to settle in during orientation week. I will go to that open house thing tomorrow morning to get my picture taken and have my laptop configured. I don't plan to go bowling. It's not my thing... actually I suck at it. First impression is important and letting a bunch of people I just met know I suck at bowling isn't something I look forward to. If anything I'll go watch lol.

What time?! 🙂

I am not really going to be doing much today except maybe trying to find a couch 🙂 so anybody down for hanging out and swimming and/or eating just PM me or just stop by or something. I can try to prop the outside door open so you can just knock on my door. Or just knock on my window. Whatever, I am just all about trying to enjoy the last few moments of calm before school starts. And I really don't know anyone at all here yet. Oh-- question-- what's the schedule for the orientation tomorrow and tuesday? I know we have to be there @8 tomorrow, but that's all I know, they never sent me any info.

Apparently tomorrow we get our schedule for the rest of the week. Orientation is Mon-Wed and classes start on thursday with some other stuff like meeting with our advisors. At least thats how it was explained to me by someone today.

ok, here's the final plan: after bowling everyone should come hang out with me and my bf at royal villa (west 38th, right off Zuck). once again I am in 2656 (next to the pool) apt 1A. It's the apartment with "LECOM ROCKS" in the window 🙂 so just come over whenever this evening, we'll be here. We have some stuff for hamburgers and fries, and some beer, but if you can, maybe bring some food and/or drinks, or if anyone wants to bring a grill, we only have a small propane one. sound good?

All I have to say is...ugh orientation. 👎
