So I have this problem. I've lived my entire life in NY. A month ago I moved to PA for a job. Am I still considered as an NY resident when I sent in my application in about a week? Will I be still considered as NY resident if I get into medical school a year from now?

Thank you!!!

Do you still have a NY driver's license? Have you kept your voter registration there? Do your parents have an address in NY that you can list as your permanent one? If yes, then I believe you are still a New York resident. If no, you may have to double check their residency requirements. You won't get much help as a PA resident since their schools take so many OOS students.

Since you will not have resided primarily in NY for the 12 months immediately prior to registration, I think the major determinant is whether or not you're still considered financially dependent on your parents - i.e. designated as a dependent on their most recent tax return. I myself got a full-time job that required me to move away from my home state immediately after graduation, but because my parents assisted me a little with my startup/moving costs, and because I only earned a salary for about half the fiscal year, my parents were still able to claim me. Consequently, I could list their home as my "domicile" / permanent residence.

If that's not the case for you, you may still be granted some leeway if you're less than 5 years out from graduating high school (see "Exceptions to Domicile Rule" section in the link above).

Most schools give you a grace year, meaning you can work OOS during the application cycle and still be considered in state for application and tuition purposes. But still best to check each schools website for this.

Yeah, I still have a house in NY, my car registeration is still with NY plate. And I'm a dependent. But my mom's state of residency is PA. My dad's state of residency is NY but he just lost his job so we are all in my mom's place. I just want to be considered in-state when I apply to NY schools. Do you think NY state will consider me in state?

I think the best way to get an official answer to this question would be to call a couple of the SUNY schools and ask someone directly.
