I recently interviewed with my top choice school and am considering sending a letter of intent.
Without trying to go into too much detail, the committee meets a month after your interview to discuss your file. Here's the thing though, from what they said is that the school does not really do waitlists. If you are not outright rejected, essentially all the committee members will rank you. All your rankings are averaged giving you a place on the potential acceptance list. Acceptances are given out to the highest ranking students and they go down the list. Once ranked, you cannot do anything to alter your place on the list.
I have heard that LOI are most useful once placed on a waitlist. However, given that this school does not really utilize normal waitlists, would it be appropriate for me to send one before they meet to discuss my file? In this case, the standard rule of thumb of sending one after a decision isn't very clear.
I do want to point out that I'm not trying to get moved up but on the list, but I was thinking I would like them to have that information when they meet.
Any input would be appreciated!
