Hey guys!!!

So I have a little situaiton right here (not talking about Jersey Shore. 😉)

I'm trying to get a letter of recommendation, yet I am not a typical straight A/stellar student. I have gotton B in the classes that I participated a lot and got to know professors.

So what do you think I should do? I could definitely ask professors whom I got As from. Yet, it was a long time ago (I will be surprised if they still remember me) and the class size was huge. So not much of student-instructor interactions!

Although I got B in class, I know the professor is very friendly and caring , and always looks after the students no matter how much research she is doing.

I am sorta leaning towards asking her for the letter of Rec, but I just wanted to ask you guys opinions !

Only wish I was a little bit smarter !!!!!

In my opinion,
A "B" is still acceptable.
So you should get your recommendation letters from any professors/instructors who really know you and are willing to write you very good ones. 😍
Those letters will be more efficient and useful for dental schools to tell who you are and why they should consider your application. 😎
Gl. :luck:

go get that recommendation. A B isnt a bad grade, plus its always better if the proff knows you personally. their recommendation will stand out much more and be a lot more personal than a standard one you may get from your other proffs who taught classes you received A's in.

Definitely get your recommendations from professors who would know you the best and would write about some positive attributes about yourself. It doesn't matter if you got an A or a B. The admissions committee can easily see whether you got an A or a B just by looking at your transcript; so getting a letter from a professor who didn't know you well does not add anything to your application, even if you scored the A.

Exactly. D schools aren't looking for brilliant students. They are more interested in candidates able to overcome difficulties and problems.

Something you might want to do when you talk to your professor is ask him/her whether or not they think they can write a good letter. One professor may think a 'B' is worthy of a letter and that you are a great person...another may think a 'B' isn't special and they would write you a poor one. I'm just saying, ask the professor.

my two letters of rec came from an o chem professor that i got an A & B's in his lecture and labs. and for my bio prof that did my other letter, I received B's in two of his classes and lab. needless to say, they got to know me well as a well rounded person over the last 1.5 years because not only did I have lecture with them, I also had labs, which shows them how well you work in a different setting than in lecture.

their letters mustve been good enough for me to get an acceptance 🙂

i got a letter of recommendation from a teacher i got a C+ in during my last quarter of ochem. i was hesitant, but i suppose it worked out since i got accepted to the school i wanted.
i, of course, explained in my request for a recommendation that she was literally the only reason i did well on the ochem part of the DAT and also why my grade wasn't so stellar that last quarter.
If it's justifiable, the professor is cool, then i don't see why he/she won't write you a good letter.

Wow u got into UCSF with those scores? really?

Yes, good LoR from B professors are fine.

I agree with the above posters. I had professors that refused to write me a LOR even though I got an A/A- in their class. But a professor that I interacted with more often (but received a B+ in her class) was very willing! And I guess it was good enough because I managed to gain an acceptance! 😀

Go with the professor who gave you a B, because they know you better, so they can write a better recommendation.

Your acknowledged character and work ethic that'll be commented on is significantly more important than the letter grade you earned.

Completly agree with this.
My microbiology teacher I got a B in, im asking him for a recommendation (took intro bio with him and got an A in that though, will also be a TA for it) so we go a bit of a way.

Another teacher who I have heard stories about wont give you a recommendation unless you get an A in introduction physilogy, AND an A in Mamalian Physiology (I personally dont even know anybody who got an A in mamalian in my school and only heard of a couple students who have, and the rumor is if you do, the recommendation gets you accepted to its med school program)

Also, Adcoms can pick up on when a person is saying in a nice way "Dont take this guy" so you would rather have a good recommendation from a professor with a B then a meh one with a professor with an A. However, I know professors who will tell you just right your own recommendation.
