Hi,

I was just wondering how many letter of recs do dental schools want on average? I heard 2 from science professors, 1 from non-science and 1 from your dentist. Is this the right information?

Thanks for the help! 🙂

This requirement varies from school to school, so it's best to check directly with the school's website to see exactly what they want.

While many schools prefer a committee letter, most schools require at least two from science professors and some want an additional letter from a dentist on top of that. The last letter can usually be from a non-science professor, supervisor, boss, volunteer coordinator, or what have you.

If not a committee letter (which most prefer) at least 3.

What exactly does a committee letter mean?

Also, would my research coordinator (the person I do research under) be considered a good LoR? And be my non-science one?

committee letter is by your health professions advisor. It would help you more if you visit your school's health professions office to find out more about this. I've always heard that a biology prof who has seen you in a class setting is better. But I also had my research professor who I did my independent research (4cr.) with write my LOR, and that worked out fine. Not too sure about non-science, I just had committee letter, research prof, and my dentist. Good luck!

@DENTUP was it okay that you had your research professor write you a LOR even though he wasn't a "science" professor? I want to ask my research professor as well, but I don't know if thats acceptable as a LOR from a science professor.

It really depends on the school. I would contact the schools that you are applying to. Some schools are okay with research professors (either paid or for credit) but some strictly say that they want professors who know you from a classroom setting.

Also if your school has a committee letter, it's the best to just have committee letter + general dentist letter (because ADSAS only takes upto 2 letters). But if not, your best bet is to find out from the schools you're applying to! Hope this helps.
