My physics professor agreed to write me a LOR.

When I asked him if he wants more info about me besides PS and CV, he said I will write about your academic performance, you need someone else to write you a character-wise LOR like a supervisor or something.

He told me when do you want it, I told him, I'll be applying by the end of June, so take your time, I am sure you are busy now as it the end of the semester, and if you later find yourself unable to write it, please let me know.

He then told me, well you want someone busy to write it for you and don't tell professors this that shows you don't have the confidence in your work or you don't care.

I told him, I think it's a cultural thing, I was just being polite, thank you for telling me that what I say might be misunderstood.

After the appointment, I remembered what he said and became very upset and sad.

It is sad, after all the hard work, and respect to him personally and to his class. I am being accused of not being confident enough.
People tells you crappy things for asking for a letter of recommendation. Out of 280+ students, I ranked #12. I talked with him before, multiple times and went to his office hours as well.

So, I want your opinion. Was I wrong or is he being too uppity?

I understand how you can feel hurt after hearing him say that. My advice would be to not dwell on it too much. It seems like an offhand comment from someone who is trying to give ~~life advice~~ to a younger person. I told my letter writers to let me know if they were busy and would be taking longer than the 2 months notice I gave. I don't think there's anything wrong with that.

Shortly... find someone else to write your LOR. That simple. Period. I think it's impossible to be able to rey on him for a good letter, might be good, but his reaction alone is a red flag for me...

Yes, I was thinking the same thing.

I think he meant well, but it made me feel bad afterward because it feels like you are being judged for being mindful and polite.

Would not ask for this dude to write it. He sounds like he really doesn't like you or at best is neutral.

Do not have him write it.

In the future:

  • Ask your writers if they can write you a strong letter of recommendation. Just ask that straight out. I got that tip from my pre-health advisors, and it helped to hear my professors say "Yes, I can, with enthusiasm."
  • Set a deadline for the letter to be done earlier than it is actually needed. I asked for letters in December and set a deadline for April (giving them plenty of time), even though my letters were not needed until June. If you are using one of those letter sites like Interfolio, you can still have the professor upload the letter earlier. This way, when AADSAS opens, you hit the ground running.
  • Get someone who can write about the non-academic parts of you. Admissions committees will see all the academic parts they need on your transcript + DAT. Letters + PS are your chance to show who YOU are.

LORs are critical to having a shot at getting in.. I would find someone else asap.

Yeah dude find another Professor to write your LOR. Someone who cares about you and who would really be willing and happy to help.

Lol i told all of my writers to take as much time as they needed. What else are you supposed to say? "Hey dude, i need my **** by this date so you better get started now" Get someone else to write, you wouldnt want a mannerless person like that to write the LOR.

I definitely would not have him write the letter, try to find someone else! Having a similar issue with my ochem professor. Got an A+ in his class and he enthusiastically agreed to write me a letter. Well, it's been a month past our agreed deadline and he hasn't replied to any of my emails the past month either. Looks like I should start looking for a replacement as well.

I agree with the others. I wouldn't have him write the letter. He prob won't do a great job at it. Don't get upset or discouraged... I had my Internship coordinator/professor of 2 classes tell me she was too busy to write one for me. I was so upset at first, but I just asked another professor. This one didn't really know me on that personal level, but I did well in her classes. So she basically had me write my own letter and send it to her with my CV.

Thanks for your replies.
Update:

Actually, I decided not to send him any request, but then he contacted me saying that I didn't send him the request and he is waiting for it.
I thought it would be bad not reply to him and who am I to waste any LORs.

So, yeah I did send him the request after all. I think it was a good decision because he said I would do great things in the future and stuff.

I think he was just being weird during our conversation, and he did not mean any harm. Maybe I was just being oversensitive or maybe not.

His Lor is stored in Interfolio, I'll use his LOR in places where they accept more than 4 LORs. In reality, I have now 4 LORs from professors ( 2 math 2 physics, I am waiting for BIOChem professor to write me one, he is taking his time, haha, and I have 1 Lor from a dentist)

Do you know which school accept additional Lors?

Well, I never say this " if you later find yourself unable to write it, please let me know." since I don't want professors who agreed already to have this thought at all. lol
