Letter of recommendation.

If the date on the last letter is only ~ a year old, I think you're fine to use it, as is. If it's older and you feel strongly about having it reissued with a newer date, call the department and speak to the secretary about the PI's whereabouts. maybe ask to make an appointment, rather than dropping by.

Have you interacted with him at all since he wrote the letter? I can't see why you'd need him to update it if you haven't. Even if you had, I would think the original is fine if you can't get in touch with him.

Yes, I did some poster presentations, and continue to work in his lab for about 6 months afterward. I don't know if he will be annoyed if I show up.

I emailed my professor to ask for a rec, and he didn't respond in 5 days, so I emailed him again and he responded on the same day!

I think sometimes professors just gloss over their email and might just miss yours. Why don't you send the email again? You can just copy&paste from the old one.

Hi, I just have a quick question.
I wanted to ask an updated letter to my research mentor in my college.
I was going to apply last year, but I didn't.

I went to his office once, but I couldn't see him,
so I sent him a message to request for the updated letter via facebook.

It's been a week, but I still didn't get a reply from him.

Does this mean simply no? Or, Should I just go to his office to ask again?
Or, Should I just use the same letter from last year?

I know it wasn't the right way to ask him, but this week was the spring break,
and the deadline is coming very soon, I needed to let him know asap.

What do you guys think?

Just send him an email or go to his office. I don't think a facebook message is the most appropriate way to ask for a new LOR.
