I just recently discovered what DO medicine is really about and I would love to apply to DO schools this year (in addition to MD schools). However, I understand that most DO schools require a letter of recommendation from a physician (DO or MD). As extensive as my clinical experience has been, I have never shadowed or worked directly with a doctor that can write me a letter. Are there any DO schools that do not require this letter? I appreciate any help I can get. 🙂

Don't all medical schools (MD & DO) request a physician's letter? Off hand I know that KCOM strongly recommends a letter from a D.O., but will allow an employers letter to be substituted. I think you should pursue a letter from a physician though, it'll open so many more doors for you.

Nope. The MD schools I've applied to just want the pre med letter and $100. Real friendly folk.

There are DO schools that don't require the DO letter but highly recommend it (in other words they require it.)

Here is the list of every school and their requirements.

hey, you still have time to shadow someone. i'm going monday to shadow a D.O. I would definately make an effort to shadow a D.O. so you can see what its like and what they do. Then you can mention a letter or whatever. Even though some DO schools say its not required, it really is important to get one and show your effort. I know some people have said they used an MD letter instead, but I think DO letter is probably best. If you can only get an MD letter, thats better than none at all.

Just look up a DO in the phone book and give them a call and explain your situation. they were probably there some years ago and will help you out.
