One of the general features of leukemia is an increased cell turnover which leads to greater DNA synthesis which leads to increased uric acid synthesis, which results in gout.

How does leukemia lead to this increased cell turnover?

Leukemia is a neoplastic disease (tumor forming). High proliferation of WBC means high rate of cell regeneration through mitosis = increased cell turnover.

a hint for boards/wards is that you more often see this in the acute post-treatment phase for leukemias, so much so that many hem/onc docs give allopurinol in conjunction w/ the chemotherapy.

Yeah, I thought it was partially due to cell destruction caused by treatment. You have purines from the destroyed cells pouring out, causing gout. At least that's what they told us in our gout section of biochem.
