I recently was accepted to my dream research lab.... I was on a few wait lists and did not think I was going to get accepted. When the PI asked me if I had already applied to medical school, I don’t know why but I just said no and this was the first time in the upcoming year. I immediately regretted saying it. I thought by saying I was on a few wait lists he wouldn’t accept me because he wanted a long term commitment.

Now I’m starting med school in a few months and the PI thinks I’m in the lab for a whole year. What do I do?? I feel really bad about lying and wish I hadn’t.

Tell him the truth, eat some humble pie, learn your lesson, and thank your lucky stars the only consequences here are embarrassment and possibly the loss of your lab spot.

You tell the truth NOW! so they can find someone else. Man, you don't ever lie to your superior dude.

The longer you wait, the harder it will be for the PI to find a replacement. Tell the truth ASAP, don't pour salt on the wound.
