By posting about lying to the Adcom, the OP was clearly looking for validation. If we had just overheard this conversation and known the truth, weighing in with our own opinions would indeed be unnecessary.

Everything I read geared towards premeds is all about "medicine requires sacrifice." If this is really true, it seems like adcoms would understand if you didn't have time to develop really intense hobbies. Why not just say that you do what you can but realize preparing for med school is the most important thing in your life right now?

Because adcom believes that if you don't have a good bit of free time in preparing for med school, then you won't be able to handle med school, which in their opinion is more rigorous than the pre-reqs. I have heard this statement from many adcom members.

Lying, cheating, it's all good. Life is not like a game, where artificial rules are set up. The only determining factor on wether or not to do something is cost/benefit analysis.

For me, I am bad at lying and would therefore probably embarrass myself if I tried. The consequence for cheating in school makes to too risky when there are less risky ways to succeed (studying).

I don't think you are going to find too many co-conspirators in the "I blatently lied in my interview" catagory here. I am sure other people have done it and will continue to do it, but they are a small fraction of the whole.

Why do you care anyways? It worked and that's all that matters, right?

Sounds like you need to get a couple of hobbies. (And I don't mean for that to sound sarcastic, but it's true.) I'm in the middle of my 1st year of med school. Yeah - I'm REALLY busy and study A LOT... but, I still make a little time for myself here and there. If I just can't study anymore, or I'm "stuck" and can't focus, I go for a bike ride, read something non-medical, go out and explore the city.

When I've gone to my professors about being stressed or feeling overwhelmed with info, they've told me to study hard, but take time out for me, too. They actually like for med students to have some sort of a life outside of school. It keeps you sane.

Personally, I went to five Ivy League Schools, hook up with models, and play professional baseball during my spare time, which isn't a lot due to all the research I am doing on stem cells (which is about to be published) and also running a hedge fund.

While I am sure that profile is typical to most pre-meds, all of the interviewers I have had seemed genuinly impressed.

I made an exception for Elizabeth Hurley once. But that was in between a conference call during a seminar I was giving about an element of dark matter that I had just discovered and had a few minutes to kill anyways. Plus, none of my colleaques from the National Football Leaque or the Screen Actors Guild were around when it happened, so I didn't have to worry about being heckled in the locker room OR the red carpet.

Actually you are wrong. In the hidden and mystical kingdom of Shangri-La, of which I have been appointed lord and ruler (which happened after a fortnight's battle with Golgotha, the eater of souls - don't ask), a "q" takes the place of a "g" when it is preceeded by an "ea". Much as the british use the letter "s" in place of the "z". Thus, in my country, it was perfect english, or rather, shanri-laian.

Thus, I was right, and I will argue with you, in true SDN style, if you try to claim otherwise (as opposed to simply admitting a mistake).

By the way, I listed the battle with Golgotha as an EC on my app AND I applied to all the California schools and will no doubt take the slot of some poor pre-med who was merely president of their school's pre-med society and has a 4.0/40. So take that suckers!

Other than that, I am always "GQ". Literally, I own the magazine and actually edit and write most of the articles (under nom-de-plumes of course).

Of course we lie. The reason we do this is that we know that the system is not 100% fair.

I know a girl who would make a great doctor. She is a (famous) concert violinist, brilliant and ambitious. However, while she was in music school 10 years ago (she went to college when she was 16) she didn't do well in any non-performance classes, she got a GPA below 2.0. She decided to do a postbacc, and in the process did another bachelors, and got a 3.8 at an ivy league university. Her science GPA is a 3.4. She did not get interviews at any M.D. programs (she applied broadly) even though she applied early.

The system is not fair to everyone.

That's not giving all the facts of her situation. What does that have to do with this situation? Since when did this thread which was about lying turn into a thread about life being unfair?????

I don't think anyone said lying and getting in is unfair unless I missed something since I declined to reach each individual post response.

I think the bigger issue is getting caught if you do lie. That said, if you refer to lying in the sense that people embellish their profiles a bit or what not, then I think that's natural to do. I mean for instance its not truly a lie if you say you were working at xyz for 1 year but took off 3 weeks in between to go home but don't mention that 3 week break. But its not the truth technically either because you missed a month in between. That's what I'd refer to as embellishing and what most people do. I know this isn't the best example but I think people understand the difference.

in your case, I don't condemn you for your actions or judge you for it. But in your particular case your hobbies weren't so bad that I think it was necessary. I also think you would have gotten in regardless of whether you said spending time with family and friends and watching tv was your response or the response you gave.

I think if you mentioned tv, they might have just asked instead what tv shows are your favorite or if it was a bunch of medical shows they might have asked which one you thought was most realistic.

I think if you define lying as embellishing then yes everyone does it to some extent. That's life. I don't know how interesting it would be to hear those things since it would all be the same old story each time.
