The med school boom is over.
From a peak of 80K applicants in 2021, we’re down to 65K in 2024 — a 19% drop. Fewer people want to be doctors. Burnout, debt, and broken healthcare are catching up. Medicine isn’t the dream it used to be.
Medical School Applicants (2020–2024): The sharp drop in medical school applicants from the 2021 peak reflects deeper structural problems in U.S. healthcare and shifting generational attitudes. The decline from 80,323 applicants in 2021 to 65,103 in 2024 is a 19% decrease—one of the largest drops in recent history.
Note that the COVID application cycle in 2021 was unusually high for medical school admissions due to those circumstances.
