Don't know if there is even such thing. Sometimes, it helps me to think of the opposite of one disease to remember that disease along with the opposite disease's presentation. A simple example would be contrasting hyperthryroidism v hypothyroidism. Pairing the immunodefficiencies with the lymphomas and leukemias is more dificult. Does anyone know of any resource that suggests and/or list medical opposites?

Only things I can think of are hypo/hyper whatever state (thyroid/calcemia/natremia/kalemia) being somewhat opposites. Not sure what you mean in terms of leukemia/lymphoma, however.

As for there being sources on this, look at any table (say in MTB 2) about the manifestation differences between the hypo/hyper conditions. If UWorld has a question on it it'll sometimes have a table in the explanation as well.

Thanks. I don't think such a resource exists. I give you a few more examples to clarify what I mean:

Plummer Vinson Syndrome and Hemachromatosis
Anemia and Polycythemia Vera
T-cell deficiency and lymphoma
Osteogenesis Imperfecta and Keloid

Like I said, I really doubt a resource exists that pair a disease with an opposite. My matches are not perfect either but it help me with memorizing.

SIADH & Diabetes Insipidus

CO Poisoning(doesn't release oxygen) and Methemoglobinemia(doesnt bind oxygen)

This is an interesting post... I thought about this when studying for Step 2 CK, how it would have been helpful to have a resource which contrasted the common DDx for a certain disease. Agree that there are some charts in Master the Boards and of course UWorld which do some of this compare/contrasting. I do not know of any text resource specifically addressing this though.

I think it's hard to do antonyms with these because although the disease processes are somewhat antonymous (PV syndrome w/ Fe def. Anemia, Hemachromatosis w/ excess Fe), the symptoms are not similar in really anyway. PV = esophageal webs, hemachromatosis = joints, fatigue, organ failure. You can't look at the symptoms in an antonymous fashion.

Same with anemia and polycythemia. Only scenarios I see this in are the ones I originally mentioned, like the hypo/hyper thyroid (diarrea vs constipation)/electrolytes (muscle weakness vs muscle overactivity [cardiac manifestations] of hypo/hyperkalemia)
