Is there a compiled list of DO schools that do not provide local rotations at affiliated hospitals (or where a student have to find his own rotations)?

Before you flame me, I did use search here and google and seemingly failed at it.

Thank you.

To be honest I didnt even know that was possible. I just assumed every medical school (DO and MD) had to send students through rotations and most of these likely local

I have heard of Caribbean schools making students find their rotations...but thats a whole other story

I have heard of it, generally as a warning from MD school advisors/aspirants.
Some of my friends a going DO route, forgoing MD altogether and they mentioned it as a point of research.

My interest spiked after reading curriculum to Pikesville, KY (PCSOM) -- only 2 years are listed, and nothing at all mentioned about MS3/MS4 rotations.

A quick google search led me to the rotations.

Many schools split their curriculum into BASIC SCIENCE and CLINICAL SCIENCE, so they may be on separate web pages.

All of the schools (DO) that I have applied to have rotations set-up for the students. These schools also have staff to help students with rotations and clerkships as well. Some schools require more work on the students' behalf in regard to setting-up electives, but I can't think of a single school that make students set-up ALL rotations on their own.

Some schools aren't as organized in the 3/4 years as they could be ... but I am 99.9% sure there is NOT a single DO school that pats you on the back and says 'good luck' at the end of 2nd year. All of them have at least some sort of structure in place. Also, I've heard mixed things about ones that are a bit lax when it comes to 3/4 years. Some students said they hated it, others said there was a lot of nice freedom for auditions.

Are there schools you are specifically thinking about?? Drop some names and we can be of more assistance.

How difficult is it to set up your own rotations?

for example, say you attend AZCOM but would like to set up your rotations in Missouri around the same hospitals that KCOM deals with, cause thats where your kids r gonna be?

is something like this possible or does your original school limit you?

Can we start with Touro-NY? There have been a few threads about TUCOM-CA and NV, but not so much lately on NY (from what I can find). I'm very curious about this school.

I assume it would be awful. Plus, I don't think you can just schedule them wherever. You may be able to do some elective rotations at the KCOM affiliates, but you'd have a hard (to possibly impossible) time doing your core rotations at a KCOM affiliate.

Great questions. It is possible to do away rotations where ever you want. I will be doing my OMM and psychiatry rotations at somewhere not affiliated with my school (PCOM)

You just need to be organized. There are forms to fill out, transcripts to be sent, etc. It's not just your school that has to OK it, but also the other institution as well. Issues of malpractice and school affiliation are especially difficult hurdles I've found. Hospitals almost always have affiliations with other schools and can take only a limited amount of students not from there. So you have to convince them why you should be chosen

You can't do all your rotations away, but I forget what the rules are regarding that. Trust me, it was a lot of work to get 2 rotations away, you'd need to hire a secretary to do more than a few out of town!

Hope that answers your question

Places like AZCOM have numerous sites that they're affiliated with across the country, but you won't get to choose to just go wherever. I know they have spots for them in Ohio at some of OU's sites, but I'm not an AZCOM student so I couldn't tell you exactly what your other options are. I believe between KCOM, KCUMB and their new branch campus, I'd bet they've got any of the Missouri sites on lock-down (Des Peres, Joplin, Kirksville, etc.) There are a ton of other sites in Missouri in more rural areas and the only other schools I've ever seen that use those places outside of KCUMB and KCOM are the other Missouri schools (Mizzou, Washington U, SLU, UMKC).
